But a new Associated Press-GfK poll shows that nationally, "Redskins" still enjoys widespread support. Nearly four in five Americans don't think the team should change its name, the survey found. Only 11 percent think it should be changed, while 8 percent weren't sure and 2 percent didn't answer.

Although 79 percent favor keeping the name, that does represent a 10 percentage point drop from the last national poll on the subject, conducted in 1992 by The Washington Post and ABC News just before the team won its most recent Super Bowl. Then, 89 percent said the name should not be changed, and 7 percent said it should.

I hope this doesn't stop the media-fueled witch hunt.

I hope you meant to say you hope it DOES stop the media-fueled witch hunt.

This article makes me feel a bit better inasmuch as the 10 percent drop from 1992 can be contributed to Political Correctness being shoved down down our throats by the media and the simple fact the team hasn't produced a consistant winner in 20 years.

I really want this name-change garbage to blow over so we can concentrate on important stuff like OTA's, mini-camp and Training Camp.

'twas being sarcastic. The name change movement is definitely not being driven by popular opinion.

D'oh! I forgot to replace the batteries in my sarcasm meter. I'm hoping Grosso and the rest of the maroons will drop it and we can get back to business. So tired of a few elitists trying to force change on the masses. :hammer:

I just find it funny that when we're 5-11 or 6-10 or 4-12 no one gives a ****.

Win the division once in 13 years and all the sudden people care, or at least try to make it seem like people care.

Insincere position is insincere.

At the draft day party we went onto the club level. For as long as I've been going to games I've never set foot on the club level or had the privledge of sitting in those seats.

I saw the carved out native American head that is used for our logo. It was given to the organization by a tribe - they wanted us to use as logo instead of the R. At least that's what I recall reading on the card underneath it, maybe someone else can confirm/correct that?

I was gonna go with giving Twitter any credibility as a polling device?

walk in to a bar
go right in to the middle of the room
say the word "redskin"
who noticed you? did they look at YOU or at the TV?

most likely anyone who hears the word "redskin" is going to think of football and either want to talk football or give you **** about being a skins fan.

Exactly! Many words have changed meanings over time. Gay used to mean happy. Awful originally meant full of awe.

Nice comes from the Latin "not to know" and a nice person originally meant someone who was ignorant or unaware.

Manufacture was from the Latin meaning 'to make by hand’ which originally signified things that were created by craftsmen. Now it pretty much means made by machines.

And so it is with Redskins, a football team from the DMV with three Super Bowl trophies, two additional World Championships and the most knowledgeable fans in the NFL. ;)

And don't forget about the word pollution. If you don't know that word's origin, look it up. Even though it's not a positive word now, it has certainly changed it's meaning. I doubt it would be used in public much less in the media.

Don't expect the media to ever give up. Many think they have championed a cause that needs to be dealt with. All the facts in the world won't change their minds.

Jay Mohr has a sports talk radio show here in LA. He's kind of a libtard douche sometimes but he has his moments. He said one thing I can agree with today regarding the name... (paraphrasing)

I don't care what Joe white guy in Middle America thinks about the name of the Washington Redskins. I care about what the majority of American Indians think. Show me a comprehensive study that shows that..

Plain and simple.

Saw this yesterday. Wasn't surprised by the result, but was a bit surprised at how lopsided it was. That's a huge margin.

I was surprised it wasnt even larger!

On Jimbo's points (which were awesome), I dont think most folks, Native Americans included, feel its being used in a derogatory fashion.

All we are seeing is attention whore pols and media raising a fuss because they are losing prestige in some area of their lives.

I'd bet that most of them dont even give a rats ass what the name is as long as they get to see their name in the paper.
