The Houston Texans are less than 100 days away from kicking off the 2025 season in Los Angeles against the Rams at SoFi Stadium and we're counting down the days until a victory ensues on the west coast.
Texans Wire will each day tell you which player has worn the number of the day leading up to kickoff and pick the player who ensured the number best during their time at NRG Stadium. As for today, let's take a look at who has won No. 63 since the inaugural season in 2002.
No. 63 currently belongs to no one entering the upcoming season. That doesn't mean someone won't wear it this year, but it would likely come after roster cutdowns with a new addition off waivers. Even then, it would likely be an offensive lineman who'd come in to backup and compete for a roster spot, if not be on the practice squad.
Let's look back at who has worn the No. 63 in recent memory to sort out the G.O.A.T. for an offensive lineman.
By default, Deiter is the right call. While expected to be a rotational option for the Texans' trenches, the former Miami Dolphins starting center took over with the first-team offense in Week 2 as C.J. Stroud's front man because of injury.
By the season's end, Deiter had gone from being cut to being added to the practice squad to starting for Houston in a playoff game as Stroud took home Offensive Rookie of the Year with over 4,000 passing yards. He signed a one-year deal the following offseason with the Washington Commanders, but that lone year in Houston was special.
More than anything, who else are you picking? All three other options were backups who started a combined 20 games in 10 years. Lamm might have been a quality option since he was a part of the playoff-bound 2018 roster, but he was the weakest link on the line that fall. Deiter, who wasn't perfect, arguably was the second-most reliable option in 2023 for DeMeco Ryans behind Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil because of his health.
