With Deebo Samuel traded to the Washington Commanders for a fifth-round pick earlier this offseason and Brandon Aiyuk recovering from a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus that he suffered in the middle of the 2024 season, the San Francisco 49ers are hoping that someone will step up in their wide receiver room in 2025.
Last week, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that fifth-year wideout Jauan Jennings is unhappy with his current contract and that if he doesn't receive a new deal from the 49ers, he'd like to be traded to another team.
On Tuesday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media ahead of their first training camp practice on Wednesday, and he shared that Jennings hasn't officially requested a trade with the team to this point.
Jennings, 28, is entering the final year of a two-year, $15.39 million contract extension he signed last May and is set to make $7.5 million in 2025. Over his first four years in San Francisco, he caught 155 passes for 1,938 yards and 13 touchdowns.
With Jennings' deal set to void at the end of the season, he's likely looking for long-term security, and even if he hasn't gone and asked for a trade with the team directly, there are other ways of making his desires known. And with the 49ers entering training camp with roughly $45 million in cap space, they could dip into that a bit and pay a guy that'll probably outperform his $4.26 million cap hit this year.
At the same time, there's an argument to be made that San Francisco can't pay everyone who wants a new deal, and they've given out a fair number of extensions this offseason. They'll just have to decide whether or not it's worth it to give Jennings a long-term deal to keep him happy when they need him.
