A lot going on in the other thread posting signings of other teams. It's cool to keep doing that as it's checking off other names we may have been watching so it does have an effect, but lets reserve THIS thread to posting and commenting specifically around COMMANDERS signings.

At first glance this looks like a big over-pay.

I think their thesis is that he is going to fit much better in DQ’s attack scheme than the 3-4 DE position he has been in his entire career. Wouldn’t surprise me if he is effective next year. I think the broken logic by the team here is they are paying up for what they think is an undervalued asset.

No we don’t know what the market is but it is hard for me to believe he suddenly went from a 1/7 guy to 3/45 after this season in NY

Tunsil has 2 years remaining on his current contract. Both at 28.850m.

I was kind of surprised they gave up on Coleman so quickly, and hate to see all these picks traded away. But this is a great move to lock down one of the most vital positions. I just question if Coleman can play guard better than Allegretti or RT better than Wyle who was not bad last season.

Peters saw firsthand what acquiring a premium LT can do for your team going back to the Trent Williams trade. You don’t skimp on the 2nd most important position on your football team when you have what appears to be a special talent at QB. Lost in all the FA craziness is that the single most important thing that needs to happen for this franchise to continue climbing is that Jayden needs to continue growing. If there is any sort of regression there, the whole team will suffer. Really like that they have prioritized doing what they need to do to insulate him and help him remain an elite QB in 2025. While the price is relatively costly in terms of picks, it’s the cost of doing business in the NFL. You don’t survive without a LT. We have never recovered since Williams left town. Had Ron drafted Christian Derrisaw, we wouldn’t be having this conversation, but you can’t cry over spilled milk.

Very good post. I think we all realize that if Jayden has a regression the team will have a substantial fall off. He pretty much carried the team so it's up to them to give him the best situation so he can continue to be a dominant player.

Cost in picks was reasonable based upon the position.

Yes, the 49ers stole Trent Williams from the useless Bruce Allen and Dan Snyder but that's not the norm.

Remember before he proved what he could do over the past 3-4 years, Tunsil was traded for TWO #1 picks and a #2.

Pretty sure you mean the useless Ron Rivera. Alas, he let Trent Williams walk for a pittance.

Regarding Kinlaw, I heard an interesting theory by John Keim this AM on the Junkies. He proposed that DQ would move Kinlaw to DE on running downs and put him at DT on obvious passing downs. He can set the edge as a DE in the run game and can rush the passer as a DT. Given his size, I don't think that is an unreasonable scenario.

Well, Bruce and Dan slow rolled Trent on a new contract and that together with the medical flap later guaranteed the club wasn't going to get a fair return.

But yes, the team so far has gone out and covered a couple of critical spots we didn't have nailed down in 2024.

We didn't have a left tackle of this quality.

We didn't have a second wide receiver to take pressure off Terry McLaurin.

And our defensive linemen were undersized across the board outside of Payne for their position.

Allen is effectively playing now at 295 to 300 and that's a bit light to take that amount of reps inside over 17 games, playing against 330 pound guards and double teams.

If Kinlaw can stretch and play both inside and outside based on down and distance that only makes the defense that much better.

After Snyder and Allen destroyed the relationship with the player. Rivera should have just shut him up with a big extension but instead publicly talked about Trent needing to “prove himself”, torpedoing the relationship and trade value further.

But the roots of it all started with Snyder and Allen before Rivera arrived. They’re all incompetent.

We needed it to get as bad as it did for Snyder to sell though so it’s fine. All served a purpose in the end.

Yeah I meant to bring that up. Of course that was when the Texas were doing everything they could to kill their team and the trade was routinely laughed at. But it does show the value of a top LT and he did put up Pro Bowl seasons in Houston.

The biggest concern I have about any OL signings is that in a vacuum our OL gets better (and I think that is true, we had a big lack of talent) - but scheme and coaching matter here. I am not sure our coaching was always great, and I am also pretty sure there were significant chunks of the season where defenses knew we were passing. That is a lot harder to control for an OL than when we keep the D guessing. I think in the past at least, the Texans were OK at that, which helps the OL generate better statistics.
