The Arizona Cardinals report to training camp on July 22 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team.
Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2024, questions they face and their roster outlook.
This focuses on tight end Travis Vokolek.
Vokolek enters his third NFL season and third with the Cardinals. He entered the league originally in 2023 as a rookie free agent out of Nebraska, signing with the Baltimore Ravens. He did not make the 53-man roster out of training camp but was signed to their practice squad. In December, he was signed by the Cardinals to their active roster and appeared in two games.
He spent the offseason with the team and made the 53-man roster out of training camp as the team's fourth tight end. He was inactive as a healthy scratch for 16 of the Cardinals' 17 games last season. He appeared in one game, logging 12 offensive snaps and two on special teams in Week 4 against the Washington Commanders. He did not log any statistics.
He is signed through the 2025 season and will make $1.03 million in salary, the league minimum for a player in his third season. That amount will be his cap hit. He will be an exclusive rights free agent after the season.
The Cardinals clearly see something Vokolek, keeping him on the active roster for all of the 2024 season, but he was clearly the No. 4 tight end behind Trey McBride, Elijah Higgins and Tip Reiman. The question he faces is whether he has done enough or can do enough in camp to lock in that spot or perhaps do more.
He is no lock for the roster, but certainly should be the favorite to be TE4 again. Whether that is enough to sustain a spot on the 53-man roster remains to be seen. He is on the roster bubble.
