2024 Injury Thread

Johnny Newton has procedure on foot.

Newton suffered a partial Jones fracture of his right foot sometime during the past season at Illinois and underwent surgery in January. During a recent checkup on the repaired foot -- it's uncertain when that occurred -- Commanders coach Dan Quinn said doctors determined he had a similar issue with his left foot.

Newton did not participate in Washington's rookie minicamp practices this weekend, standing off to the side and wearing a walking boot on his left foot.

I wonder if Newton’s injury was know or if it was a failure of the scouting department. Peter’s is still mostly relying on the Marties scouting team.

If other teams knew this and the Commanders didn’t, this would be a failure of the medical team, not the scouting department. He had the same injury last year on his other foot, played through it, then had surgery in January. He didn’t do the combine, but did has his own pro day in April. So he was moving good enough at that point. The during a check up, they discovered an injury to his other foot. If he had the injury at that time in this other foot during the interviews and all the pre draft process and it wasn’t detected, then that is on the medical team. I have no idea what a teams medical staff get and don’t get and if something like this can even be known. But I would be shocked if a scouting department would have known about a previously unknown injury.

I think we have a new medical team or at least the guy heading it is new. Not sure though. I do know that our previous medical team was problematic and caused major riffs between players and team on several instances because of missed diagnoses.

Yeah, the old staff blew. Lots of injuries and other problems. I’m hoping that the new staff is top of the line. Injuries will happen, but hopefully the players are taken care of better when they do.

Reading up on the Jones fracture, it is fairly common among athletes - more so in soccer and gymnastics.

But one of the complicating factors is whether the fracture is due to an athlete landing awkwardly and off balance versus an athlete that has a predisposition to this type of injury because of body physiology - ie, carrying too much weight on the frame for the body to absorb punishment, etc.

Again, if it's the former than the recovery rate is near 100%. But if the latter the docs have to go in and put a metal rod in to stabilize the toe and that could keep an athlete off the field for some time.

The fact it happened on the OTHER foot to me says there could be a stability issue in re his 304 pounds and the movement and balance necessary to play the game.

I hope I am wrong in that regard.

I looked it up on Google. Said it was probably cancer.

The Jones fracture? It was really something else other than structural issue with the foot as was reported?

It was a joke. Every google medical search results in a possible cancer diagnosis.

I worry about any stress or lower body injuries.

People at first thought Deion would recover from his turf toe issues but that effectively ended his career as a top cover corner.

Can't thank no one but the man above? Maybe a little thanks for his surgeons, physical therapists, etc.?

At least he didn't say God told him the number he would sign for like Sean Gilbert did back in the day :D
