Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017 (Continual Updates)

Washington Redskins‏@Redskins
#Redskins sign DB Lou Young, waive DB Shak Randolph.

Campito Fodderito.

Offseason Updates:

Nate Sudfeld had a shaky start at OTAs, but has settled down recently and is making good throws as well as good decisions.

Look for Josh Norman to play off coverage in 2017. Instead of just watching the receiver, he will now focus on the quarterback too.

Samaje Perine is finding it a bit tougher with the veterans than he did with the rookies a few weeks ago.

As cited by Win4us and several sources, Dan Snyder is now becoming more involved in contract negotiations with Kirk Cousins.

Rich Tandler‏@Rich_TandlerCSN
Trent Williams and Jordan Reed still out at #Redskins OTA's.
BBQ's Take: It's not a big deal and it might be approved by the team.

Also from Rich Tandler:
Offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh said that decisions on who gets the snaps at running back will be a “game-to-game, even an in-game evaluation.” No player will be on a “pitch count”. He said that Chris Thompson could get some first- and second-down reps and that Rob Kelley and Samaje Perine might play on third down.

OT Kevin Bowen had an injury to his ankle late in practice. It looked serious.

Alabama coach Nick Saban says the Redskins got a huge steal in Jonathan Allen. While many fans will say he is stating the obvious, getting good vibes from the college coach is nice. He rarely hands out such praise.

Su'a Cravens is practicing this week at both safety positions.
BBQ's Take: This should afford him the opportunity to fully learn what is expected of the strike and how both safeties work together in tandem.

Players who have been fielding kickoff and punt returns include (in no particular order): Bashaud Breeland, Will Blackmon, Maurice Harris, Chris Thompson, Zach Pascal.

Zach Brown is now getting many more reps with the first team at ILB next to Will Compton.

Martrell Spaight continues to be sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Don't look for any joint practices with another team at training camp this year as we have seen in the past.

The fact that Ryan Grant can play all three WR positions means that it is looking like he will make the roster for another season.

Preston Smith had a very good practice on Wednesday and was constantly getting into the offensive backfield.

Niles Paul is getting a lot of work in at OTAs and is looking stout. He is fully healed from last season's shoulder injury.

Lonshot LB Nico Marley gets to the football quicker than anyone on the defense.
BBQ's Take: Marley is a likely practice squad candidate, but don't take your eyes off of him.

DJ Swearinger said he and former teammate Tony Jefferson studied the Redskins safety problems last season and knew one of them would sign with the team in the offseason.

DE Anthony Lanier has been doing well on third downs at OTAs. Look for him to grow into the role of situational pass rusher in 2017.

Offseason Updates:

The last camp, mini camp, before the team heads to Bon Secours in Richmond got underway today.

Matt Jones was a full participant in practice today. He stood off to the side during special teams practice. Could this be the real reason he was inactive the last nine games of 2016?

Josh Doctson looked good today in drills and had crisp routes.

New VP of Football Operations (and still cap guru) Eric Schaffer says the negotiations with Kirk Cousins (and agent) continues. There are positive vibes on both sides.

Jonathan Allen looked quick in drills today, especially against Arie Kouandjio.

Dustin Hopkins was perfect on extra points and field goals today, including a fifty-three yarder.

CB Kendall Fuller is off to a good start this summer and played the slot really well today.

Jordan Reed was absolutely dominant today. Eleven targets, eleven catches - including a twenty-five yard touchdown in a two minute drill.

Adam Schefter‏@AdamSchefter
Text this morning from Redskins official on teams' pending front-office changes: "We finally have something in DC that doesn't 'leak' info."
BBQ's Take: This was an apparent problem with Scot McCloughan.

Scott Campbell is now Senior Personnel Executive.

All players were at mini camp today. Injured players were off to the side as visual participants.

Bashaud Breeland had a good day, particularly with attention on the running game. He was able to quickly diagnose running plays and zero in on the back.

Ryan Anderson looked a bit lost and confused at times - not unusual for a rookie. The hope is that he will learn as training camp and the preseason unfolds.

Deshazor Everett played with a great deal of intensity today. All in all, he was solid.

Josh Norman spent most of practice learning the nuances of off coverage.

Nate Sudfeld had another mixed day, but did have some good passes.

Kyle Smith has been promoted to the Director of College Scouting.

Ryan Grant continued to work as the number three receiver today with Doctson coming in during four receiver sets.

Jay Gruden is strongly emphasizing two minute drills this offseason and it will continue to be a focal point in each practice.

Doug Williams is the new VP of Player Personnel.

Standing out during the two minute drills and keeping the chains moving was Maurice Harris and Jamison Crowder.

Getting first team reps at running back today were Robert Kelley and Chris Thompson. Getting second team reps were Samaje Perine and Matt Jones. Third team reps went to Mack Brown and Keith Marshall.

Lining up for punt returns were Chris Thompson, Will Blackmon, Zach Pascal, and Jamison Crowder.

Tress Way was consistently booming punts of 70 yards.

Good tidbits there B.B.

The "like" option is missing tho, Russia musta hacked it

Today's updates are suspended until tomorrow. We'll have a full slate of updates at that time.

Offseason Updates:

Rookie camp, OTAs, and mini camp are now history. The BBQ nerd will have his first roster prediction tomorrow. Training camp opens July 27 at Bon Secours in Richmond.

DeAngelo Hall lowered his cap hit from $4.25M to $2.3M. The Redskins gain $1.95M in cap space.

The defense had an excellent day on Wednesday, but in all fairness Jay Gruden introduced new passing plays to Kirk Cousins and there were a few struggles.

The new passing plays center on using the height/tallness from new receivers.

The deadline to get deals with franchised players is one month from today.

Greg Manusky has been using delayed blitzes at times and it has been very effective in practices.

There are a few rumors about Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy not getting along. For now, it is just rumors.

Su'a Cravens has no idea why he was used as a linebacker last season and looks forward to playing strike safety now. Although Joe Barry is not mentioned, it does speak to his leadership.

Jay Gruden's overwhelming support for Ryan Grant absolutely mystifies everyone (me, myself, and I) here at the international headquarters of BBQ.

Kirk Cousins played a round of golf with President Trump last weekend.

Junior Galette is being much more cautious with his recovery this offseason after missing the last two seasons. He believes that returning to form and being even better is a realistic goal.

Changes in the Redskins front office this week reflect the determination to eliminate the pattern of leaks and similar distractions. This was the main issue with Scot McCloughan.

The Redskins were originally scheduled to practice in mini camp today, but Jay Gruden ended the camp one day early.

Jonathan Allen is being groomed slowly and deliberately by defensive line coach Jim Tomsula. That is by design and it will allow the rookie to be fresh and ready when the season begins.

Jim Tomsula was asked by his wife and daughters to shave his mustache because it made him look "old and scraggly", so he did. More importantly, he has lost some weight and recognized the need to eat healthier.

Tomsula likes the nose tackles who are vying for spots on the roster.

Anthony Lanier has added about 20 pounds of muscle to his frame over the last four months.

Don't be surprised if DeAngelo Hall starts the season on the PUP list. It is also possible he will go to injured reserve. However, the coaches like his influence in the locker room.

Kirk Cousins treated all of last offseason like it was the regular season and admits that was a mistake. He plans to spend the next few weeks in a much different way and be ready/fresh for training camp and the regular season.

DT Joey Mbu says that Ziggy Hood's workouts are intense. Very, very intense.

The Washington Nationals drafted pitching prospect Jake Cousins. He is the cousin of Kirk Cousins (say that three times very fast). Kirk says there is enough room in Washington for two Cousins - or cousins. I'm not confused and neither is my cousin - or cousins.

Eric Schaffer said his role with the team is not changing. It's just more of a formalization of what he continues to do.

Kirk Cousins treated all of last offseason like it was the regular season and admits that was a mistake. He plans to spend the next few weeks in a much different way and be ready/fresh for training camp and the regular season.

Maybe that's why he seemed to sputter down the stretch last season. Maybe he just ran out of gas. Or maybe that's just an excuse.

It's not like he started last season in mid-season form ...

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017 (Continual Updates)

Greetings to all. Summer is here, the OTAs are history, rookie camp is history, and mini camp has ended. The Redskins will now have their long vacation before training camp opens next month (July 27).

Today we will feature our first roster prediction. Several more will be posted during training camp and the preseason. We’ll continue to monitor any free agent news, but nothing is likely to happen during this hiatus.

Who will be on the roster of fifty-three? Who will end up on the practice squad? Who will not make it to the regular season? Who will be a surprise cut? Feel free to post your roster and practice squad predictions. We’d love to see them and feel free to post more than one prediction – several are highly encouraged.

Let’s get right to it.

Roster Prediction, 2017

Joey Mbu, DE/DT
Tyler Catalina, G
Lynden Trail, LB
Keith Marshall, RB
Kevin Bowen, OT
Kendal Thompson, WR
Kyle Kalis, G
Zach Pascal, WR

After four games, the Redskins will need to make room for Trent Murphy. We think it will come at the expense of Chris Carter or Will Blackmon. It could come at the expense of Josh Harvey-Clemons, but we think the Louisville product would be placed on the practice squad if this happens.

Montae Nicholson could start the season on the PUP list.

BBQ believes that Fabian Moreau will start the season on the PUP list. When he is elevated to the roster, we think Josh Holsey will go to the practice squad.

There is the first roster prediction of 2017. Soon, BBQ will take a break of about five weeks unless there is major news to deal with during the hiatus. We’ll return to this same thread when training camp starts and have regular updates and more roster predictions. That doesn’t mean the conversation stops. Feel free to comment on any aspect of this blog, even if it is something posted back in January. When the regular season arrives, we’ll return to the weekly grades, evaluations, and questions. We’re getting closer!

See you as we go along

Hail To The Redskins!

I'm guessing they're just keeping Matt Jones around, in case there's a major injury to Perrine, Kelley, or Thompson in camp.
And I'm guessing they're just keeping DeAngelo Hall around, even if it's IR or PUP, because they have plans to keep him in the organization in some capacity once he retires as a player, and they want to maintain a 'positive connection' with him for that. Just a guess.

I agree that Jones is an emergency guy in case of injury to Perrine or Kelly, possibly a trade to a team if they have an injury but not really Thompson. Matt a 2 down back where the Skins really don't have much experience at the moment (Perrine & Kelly) while Chris is a change of pace guy. Nether Brown or Thompson have the size to be 2 down guys through the season. Haven't heard much about Keith Marshall so don't know how he may tilt the scales.

Fumbling issues aside, Jones' biggest game was against the Saints, and it was all about pass-catching out of the backfield.
He deteriorated the Saints' defense the whole day, mostly catching passes. So I can see him filling in as a 3rd down back with ease.

If Kirk Cousins signs a new contract on or before July 17, then we will have one more 2018 mock posted here. Otherwise, the next mock will come in a new thread during the bye week this fall.

Offseason Updates:
Training camp opens July 27 in Richmond, VA.

WR Ryan Grant worked a lot with the first team unit through OTAs and mini camp. He is a favorite of Coach Jay Gruden, but will it be enough to keep him on the roster of fifty-three this fall?

While talks and negotiations have reportedly taken a turn for the positive according to various reports, BBQ still believes a long term deal for Kirk Cousins will not happen by the July 17 deadline.

Yes, the deadline is now 4 pm on Monday July 17. The CBA says that such deals should not be done on a Saturday, but on the first business day of the new week. So the original deadline is now two days later.

Jason La Canfora says there is an eighty percent chance that a long term deal between Cousins and the Redskins will get done. Uh-oh. However, J.P. Finlay agrees.

The Redskins now have about $6.5M in cap space for 2017. If that amount carries over to 2018, they will have nearly $61.4M in cap space. Add at least $12M to that figure for next year with the expected cap increase.

Here is a very early list of (potential) Redskins free agents after the 2017 season: Kirk Cousins, Chris Thompson, Terrelle Pryor, Shawn Lauvao, Niles Paul, Spencer Long (could be tendered), Derek Carrier, Ryan Grant (could be tendered), Ty Nsehke (eligible for a second straight tender), Vinston Painter (could be tendered), Mack Brown (could be tendered), Mason Foster, DeAngelo Hall, Zach Brown, Bashaud Breeland (could be tendered), Will Compton, Trent Murphy, Will Blackmon, Junior Galette, Josh Evans, Chris Carter, Brian Quick, Zach Vigil (could be tendered), Quinton Dunbar (could be tendered), Deshazor Everett (could be tendered), Houston Bates (could be tendered), Dashaun Phillips (could be tendered), Phil Taylor, and Dustin Hopkins (could be tendered).

If Spencer Long gets an original round tender and is signed by another team, the Redskins would receive their third round pick. If Long gets a first or second round tender, then that would be the cost to sign him.

If Bashaud Breeland gets an original round tender and is signed by another team, the Redskins would receive their fourth round pick. If Breeland gets a higher round tender, then that would be the cost to sign him.

The same rules apply to Ryan Grant. His original round tender would be a fifth. Ditto for Vinston Painter and Dustin Hopkins. Both would have sixth round originals.

Doug Williams has lavished a large amount of praise on Nate Sudfeld. BBQ believes that the young quarterback will get extensive work in training camp and the preseason.

Personal Thoughts:
For next offseason (and beyond), the 2018 blog will be known as “Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, Roster, 2018”. We feel it is a better representation of what is provided in the offseason blog of BBQ. If you have a better name, then please let our executive secretary or lawyers know.

I think it is possible that Fabian Moreau and Montae Nicholson start the 2017 season on the PUP list or go to IR – a redshirt season.

I would not be surprised if DeAngelo Hall misses what will be his last season for the Redskins because of an injury.

Dan Snyder on the Supreme Court ruling: “I am thrilled. Hail to the Redskins”.
BBQ says: It is time for the nonsense to end. The team name stays and the debate should end once and for all.

Rich Tandler thinks Ryan Grant will beat out Brian Quick for the final roster spot at wide receiver. BBQ disagrees, but acknowledges that it is possible.

BBQ believes the new title for Doug Williams is good. He interacts well with the players and has their respect. While his office role is likely in name only, the title does afford him the opportunity to cultivate relationships with the players. It truly is a positive for the organization.

We will continue to have updates as needed.

See you as we go along.

Hail To The Redskins!
