Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017 (Continual Updates)

Jay Gruden gonna have a splitting headache the night before he cuts down from 90 to 53.
Probably safer for our last preseason game, tho.
With 90 players we can rest every single 1st AND 2nd string player for preseason #4.
That game is gonna be like an extended Senior Bowl.

I don't understand the resistance to expanding rosters from the 53 man limit to 60-65? It's clearly a need given how many injuries occur in the modern era. You'd think the players association would be all over that?

Ian Rapoport reporting that Matt Jones will not be at OTA's.

Notes From Today's OTA:

As Chris posted, Matt Jones will not be attending any of the OTAs. He will be a post June 1st cut. Count on it.

Fabian Moreau is a spectator at OTAs and his locker will be next to Josh Norman's.

Jordan Reed and Trent Williams are not at OTAs this week.

A large number of media are at OTAs today - some are saying the most ever. A lot attention focused on the Redskins this offseason.

Junior Galette is doing position drills and looks to be just fine.

The team has been practicing in the bubble today. Too wet on the fields to practice.

Kory Lichtensteiger is now an intern with the Redskins. He has lost weight and no longer looks like a lineman.

Martrell Spaight, Fabian Moreau, DeAngelo Hall, and Montae Nicholson are all present at OTAs, but are observing/working off to the side.

The running backs taking snaps in order who are: Rob Kelley, Chris Thompson, Mack Brown, Samaje Perine.

Josh Doctson is a full participant at OTAs. He has been impressive today according to several reports.

New rule for the NFL - Teams can now designate two players to return from IR, not one.

Kendall Fuller has been taking snaps at nickel CB and at FS. He has been looking good.

Matt Jones didn't make it to OTA's but we was spotted the the movies last night-

Possibly there's some resistance due to the cap. Can that be raised and/or are players willing to take a little less to share the pot with a few more guys?
Maybe they could have a 7 to 10 guy roster expansion with some restrictions on who can fill those additional slots. Players under the vet minimum salary benefit, players with 4 or fewer years playing or something along those lines. Cap hit would be fairly minimal to add that many guys for a reserve/expansion roster under those limitations. Your down to using 3rd string guys at that point anyway - in case of emergency, break glass.

note: vet minimum salary benefit (MSB) - this is different than the veteran minimum. The MSB is for players with over 4 credited seasons but their cap hit will be based on that of a 2 - year player, irregardless of how many seasons the vet actually has. Contract is 1 year only with a max of $80,000 in additional compensation. Example: if they cut Hall and another team signs him to a 1 year vet minimum deal ($1M for 10+ seasons) under this it would be a max cap hit of; $695,000 - $615k (2 year minimum) + $80K bonus (signing, workout, roster, ect).

Offseason Updates:

The first set of OTAs ended late last week and another set begins today.

Fabian Moreau has signed his contract. Here is the contract: $3.339 million, including $825,392 signing bonus. All draft picks are now signed.

Matt Jones is reportedly on the trading block. BBQ thinks there will be no takers and Jones will be released in the coming weeks.

If there is a trade involving Jones, the most likely landing spots include the Rams (Sean McVay), 49ers, and Lions.

We'll have more news as the OTAs continue.

Offseason Updates:

Gerald McCoy, all pro defensive tackle for Tampa Bay, says that Trent Williams is the best left tackle in the league.

Von Miller, OLB for Denver, offers the same praise for Trent Williams and says the all pro left tackle is also the mentally toughest in the game today.

Stop us if you heard this last summer. Junior Galette has progressed well in his recovery and is well ahead of schedule. He has been looking good at OTAs.

Some pundits think Arie Kouandijo could push for the starting gig at left guard. If that happens, Shawn Lauvao would be good depth at guard.

The three positions that still lack depth are strike safety, slot receiver, and right guard. The Redskins hope these situations can be answered this summer.

Matt Jones continues to be a no show at OTAs and has apparently been told that he is no longer in the team plans. He has requested a trade or release.

Even though the weather is nice in Ashburn, the team is practicing in the bubble due to soggy fields.

Quinton Dunbar had his left foot/ankle wrapped in ice late this morning. Josh Evans had his right thigh wrapped in ice late this morning.

Quirky #Redskins note: On OTA roster 5 dudes named Josh, 3 named Zach, another 3 Matts, 2 Trents, 2 Quicks & 2 Wills. How bout that?

Kory Lichtensteiger is helping to coach the Olinemen at OTAs.

Jonathan Allen has been taking first team reps after taking second team reps last week.

Matt Ioannidis is bigger this year and quite a bit quicker according to reports.

Ryan Grant practiced with the first unit today along with Jamison Crowder and Terrelle Pryor.

Josh Doctson practiced yesterday, but a prior agreement had him not practicing in the latter half of today. He will return to the field tomorrow.

Offseason Updates:

The last of the OTAs started today and ends later this week.

Brian Quick is not certain to make the roster of fifty-three. This speaks to the depth of the receiving corps.

Look for Chris Thompson to have an increased role in 2017, especially in two minute formations.

Jim Tomsula became animated toward the dlinemen last week for walking to the next drill instead of getting there quickly.

BBQ believes it is time to cut Matt Jones.

Terrelle Pryor is consistenly turning heads with his speed at OTAs. He could be faster than DeSean Jackson Jackson now.

Will Blackmon is very happy that Toorian Gray is the new defensive backs coach. He says that good coaching is now coming to the defensive backs. Ouch.

Defensive tackle AJ Francis believes that OTAs are a waste of time and believes everything can be learned in training camp and the preseason.

Rich Tandler believes that Mack Brown does not make the roster of fifty-three and ends up on the practice squad.

Su'a Cravens could struggle a bit at his new position early in the season, but coaches think he will adapt quickly and should be grasp it after a few games.

Instead of scrapping to make the team, Robert Kelley is focused on becoming a better NFL running back.

Maurice Harris may not be a starter this year, but he could slide into that role in 2018.

Redskins coaches want Ryan Anderson to lose a few pounds and be in a bit better shape. They expect this course of action to make him quicker.

When moved to the slot last year, Bashaud Breeland yeilded the lowest passer rating in the NFL. Yes, the entire league.

Thompson was great last year, but I'm going to go contrarian on him. With Perine in the mix, a lot of folks assume he'll steal the starting job from Fat Rob. He might, but Kelley is a competitor. If anything, I think Thompson could be relegated to the role more like the one he played season before last, where he was mostly a 3rd down/change of pace back. I just think between Kelley and Perine, it's going to be hard for Thompson to see a big increase in carries. Just a feeling though.
