Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

OK, so what do we do at Safety with Dix gone? Go with youth? Sign Eric Berry for a couple seasons? Go with Dennard at CB to bolster that area of DB's so we can rely on youth beside Collins?

I just saw Dennard is still available and think he could be a very solid acquisition...again provided we get him for the right price.

I'd like to see them go after Tre Boston. The guy excels in coverage and would compliment Collins.

Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land and guests from social media – we hope you become a member here.

Free Agency has arrived and the 2019 season is well underway. This is our latest free agency update for the 2019 offseason and the heat is officially on. The sun now rises on the 2019 off-season and the intensity will continue to increase.

As the free agency curtain is unfurled, things will become much clearer. Will Alex Smith ever return from a brutal injury? What kind of changes will we see to the roster? Those are some of the biggest questions to be answered in the 2019 off-season.

Who will we target in free agency? Who will we re-sign? Who will we not re-sign? Who will get released? Feel free to offer your opinions and predictions.

We take the latest chatter from Redskins Park and media pundits as BBQ tries to formulate what could happen in the coming days, weeks and months.

Troy Apke, FS (Likely Returns)

Re-structure Contract Candidates:

Alex Smith, QB
Jordan Reed, TE
Josh Norman, CB

2019 Dead Money Contracts:

DJ Swearinger ($1.33M)
Orlando Scandrick ($500K)

Off-Season Updates:

Landon Collins to the Redskins is very likely to happen, but it is not a 100% guarantee. Update: Collins is a Redskin.

The Josh Rosen trade to the Redskins is probably a thing, but there is no guarantee this happens either. Alex Smith would be the perfect mentor and would help Rosen to learn the system.

The current Redskins cap room currently stands at $16.66M for 2019. The NFL cap for this year is $188.2M. Re-signing Brandon Scherff will provide more cap room. Releases and re-structures will also increase the cap room.

If Josh Norman is released, he would count $3M in dead money for 2019. Cutting him would save $11.5M. Overall savings would be $8.5M. However, BBQ doubts he will be released.

Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix is heading to the Bears on a one year contract. Farewell, Double-Hyphen.

We know absolutely nothing on Alex Smith, but he will obviously not return in 2019. Will he be ready for the 2020 season? Is his career over? Will he retire? Will he give the Redskins any cap relief? No one knows, but we'll stay on top of it.

Redskins beat reporter John Keim of ESPN believes the team will not re-sign Preston Smith and Jamison Crowder. Preston Smith is gone. Crowder is still an unknown, but there is a chance that he is gone. Update: Crowder is signed with the Jets and Smith is heading to the Packers.

Personal Thoughts:

Players I believe that will not return include Michael Floyd, Mark Sanchez, Austin Howard, and Luke Bowanko.

The contract given to Jamison Crowder by the Jets should yield a fourth round comp selection in 2020 – for now.

The contract given to Ty Nsekhe by the Bills should yield a fifth round comp selection in 2020 – for now.

The contract given to Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix should yield a sixth round comp selection in 2020 – for now.

Here is a list of players that I would like for the Redskins to consider in free agency. Not all of them can be signed, but these are a few I like.
Duke Johnson, RB, Cleveland (if released)
Bud Dupree, OLB, Pittsburgh (likely to be released)
Shane Ray, OLB, Denver
Landon Collins, SS/FS, New York Giants (the big splash) – hitting free agency after not being franchised. Update: Done!

In Conclusion:

The free agency updates are starting to increase significantly. We'll have regular updates and post information as it becomes available. A new mock is coming Friday.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

The Redskins must have been giving everyone a head fake about resigning Dix.

You can't get much cheaper for a starter than $3.5M for one year 😆

Please don't anyone bring up Apke.

He was an athlete we took to make into a football player.

He isn't a safety except by designation.

AndI wouldn't have had an issue with that if he had been a seventh rounder or UDFA.

But you don't take flyers in the fourth round, not when teams like New England and LA are getting guys there that can come in and play.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

In a perfect world, Troy Apke will provide speed and coverage as a FS, while Collins provides decent coverage with stellar run support, and brutal tackling as a SS.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

You know what? After Kirk effing Cousins, I don't want any of these players on the team if they aren't enthusiastic about being on the team. Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out Dix.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

I'd like to see them go after Tre Boston. The guy excels in coverage and would compliment Collins.

Maybe both? We need help at both positions. I know, I know...we don't have the money.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Yep, so long Double-Hyphen.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Alright here's my mockerana, everyone should do one and we can compare who picked the best at a later date. Feel free to roast away bitches
LG, ROLB, FS, WR, WR, CB, C/G, CB

1.Cody Ford*, G/OT, Oklahoma
Height: 6-5. Weight: 335.
Projected 40 Time: 5.28.
Projected Round (2019): 1-2.
2/9/19: Ford was the starting right tackle for the Sooners, but some sources say that he projects to being a guard in the NFL. Others think that Ford could stay on the edge, and some think a team could get away with him at left tackle. Some sources have compared Ford to Pro Bowler Duane Brown.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuplFcLZFpE

2.Jaylon Ferguson, 3-4OLB, Louisiana Tech
Height: 6-4. Weight: 256. Arm: 34.25. Hand: 8.5.
Projected 40 Time: 4.72.
Projected Round (2019): 2-3.
2/16/19: In 2018, Ferguson totaled 64 tackles with 26 tackles for a loss, 17.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and four passes broken up. Some sources are intrigued with Ferguson, but others aren't high on him. He is a huge love/hate prospect depending on who you ask. Ferguson had a solid week of practice at the Senior Bowl, but he was disinvited from the NFL Scouting Combine over a fight from his freshman year at Louisiana Tech that resulted in charges for simple battery.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0sqOT0bp1k

3.Chauncey Gardner-Johnson*, S/CB, Florida
Height: 6-0. Weight: 207.
Projected 40 Time: 4.53.
Projected Round (2019): 3-4.
2/9/19: Gardner-Johnson totaled 66 tackles, nine for a loss, three sacks, two passes broken up and two interceptions in 2018 from mainly playing slot cornerback for the Gators. He played well overall for them and was a productive presence in the middle of the field. Gardner-Johnson is a solid tackler and has turned into an aggressive run defender. Some team sources feel that Gardner-Johnson is a better prospect than Duke Dawson, who was the Gators' slot corner in 2017 and a second-round pick by the Patriots.

3. to cards Josh Rosen

5. Hakeem Butler*, WR 225, Iowa State
Height: 6-6. Weight: 225.
Projected 40 Time: 4.57.
Projected Round (2019): 4-6.
3/7/19: Butler is a big receiver who presents mismatch size for the NFL. He had 60 receptions for 1,318 yards and nine touchdowns in 2018. It was a big jump over his sophomore year when he recorded 41 catches for 697 yards and seven scores. At the combine, Butler ran well, putting up a 40 time that will help him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHg40Dz94p0

5.Jazz Ferguson*, WR, Northwestern State
Height: 6-5. Weight: 223.
Projected 40 Time: 4.69.
Projected Round (2019): 5-7.
3/7/19: Ferguson is a big receiver coming from a small school, so he needs to put up fast times in the leadup to the 2019 NFL Draft to help his draft stock. He got off to a good start by running fast at the combine. In 2018, Ferguson had 66 receptions for 1,117 yards and 13 touchdowns.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCgX9H0HMkE

6.Jordan Miller, CB, Washington
Height: 6-0. Weight: 180.
Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
Projected Round (2019): 4-6.
2/9/19: Miller totaled 26 tackles with six passes broken up and two interceptions in 2018. He is a solid corner who could fit best in a zone scheme.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2hheVSXa0Q

7.Sean Krepsz, C/G, Nevada
Height: 6-5. Weight: 325.
Projected 40 Time: 5.50.
Projected Round (2019): 5-7.
2/9/19: Krepsz missed some time early in the 2018 season with an elbow injury.

8/28/18: Krepsz is a 3-year starter for Nevada and has been a solid center. His reliable play at center landed him on the Rimington watch lists in the spring and fall during the 2017 season. Krepsz is big for a center, and his body type would fit well at guard as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PDuMFb8HZY

7.Michael Jackson, CB, Miami
Height: 6-2. Weight: 195.
Projected 40 Time: 4.54.
Projected Round (2019): 4-6.
2/9/19: In 2018, Jackson totaled 42 tackles with six passes broken up. Some have projected Jackson as an early-round pick, but in speaking to some team sources, they have graded him well into the third day of the 2019 NFL Draft.

8/29/18: Jackson was only in his first year starting for the Hurricanes in 2017, but there was talk about him entering the 2018 NFL Draft. In 2017, he totaled four interceptions with five passes broken up and 43 tackles.

Now that is what I am talking about!!! I love it when any of you post mocks! If you want to edit, there is one more pick in round three - the comp pick.

Awesome! And thank you!

Haha, fail on my part. We'll leave it open til the Rosen situation gets resolved. Otherwise it would be a TE/FB blocking type to shore up the running game.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

the smith move was solid but he had a freak injury, it happens, and its not like with RG3 where the coaches could have avoided it either. I hope we just slowly build up depth, I have always said i would rather have a few terrible years and draft better and get some talent, than always be in the middle. I hate mediocre worse than really bad because at least with really bad there is hope for the future/

Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land and guests from social media – we hope you become a member here.

The 2019 NFL draft is creeping closer and it will be here later next month! Free agency has arrived and we now have a few ideas about what the team needs in late April. The process of team building never ends and BBQ is about to take a look at what could happen later this spring. The NFL Combine provided us with additional information and that data will continue to be processed for the next several weeks.

Will BBQ match or surpass the success that it had with the 2018 mocks? It will be difficult and very challenging, but it is a task that we embrace. With that kind of success, we truly believe it helps the members of BGO to focus on the players who are prospects that the Redskins are seeking. It feels good to provide everyone here with the kind of service you expect from BBQ.

Upcoming Dates:
- Days until the NFL Draft: 41
- Days until the 2019 Regular Season Opener: 174

Without any further delays, let's take our latest look at the 2019 draft with this mock.

Round One: Trade
The Redskins trade down in round one and gain a second and fourth rounder.

Round One: Clelin Ferrell, OLB, Clemson
Grabbing one of the best players from a national champion has been a strategy for the Redskins in recent years, but this time the player comes from Clemson. Clelin Ferrell is an elite talent at edge. He has elite pass rushing skills. He has an elite motor that never stops. His strength is elite. Ferrell will need to adjust from having is hand in the dirt on the line of scrimmage to a stand up 3-4 linebacker, but should make the transition smoothly.

Other Possible Picks:
Cody Ford, G/OT, Oklahoma
Brian Burns, OLB, Florida St.
T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa
Jachai Polite, Edge/OLB, Florida
Montez Sweat, Edge/OLB, Mississippi St.
Jawaan Taylor, OT, Florida
Daniel Jones, QB, Duke
Noah Fant, TE, Iowa
Kyler Murray, QB, Oklahoma

Round Two: Deebo Samuel, WR, South Carolina
As an established offensive weapon, Deebo Samuel started to catch the attention of scouts by his second year for the Gamecocks. Excellent route running skills. Superior moves against the elite cornerbacks of the SEC cemented his legacy at South Carolina in 2018. Samuel has solid speed to go with his elusiveness – he can gain major chunks of yardage after a catch. If he has a step on any defender, Samuel is a sure bet to reach the end zone.

Other Possible Picks:
D.K. Metcalf, WR, Mississippi
Rashan Gary, DE/OLB, Michigan
Kelvin Harmon, WR, North Carolina St.
Jaquan Johnson, SS, Miami
Parris Campbell, WR, Ohio St.
Will Grier, QB, West Virginia
Chris Lindstrom, OG, Boston College
Jachai Polite, Edge/OLB, Florida
Marquise Brown, WR, Oklahoma
Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, SS, Florida
A.J. Brown, WR, Mississippi

Round Two: J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, WR, Stanford
Arcega-Whiteside could be the most accomplished receiver prospect in the 2019 draft. He has elite skills and is simply a master at all of the tree routes. Routinely makes incredible catches. A true highlight reel. Ability to separate from defenders on a regular basis. A powerful red zone target – fades and slants are a specialty. Long strides give him an advantage over safeties. Often gains good yardage after the catch.

Round Three: Jace Sternberger, TE, Texas A&M
Sternberger could start from day one, but probably needs to add ten to fifteen pounds of bulk and muscle to his long frame. He is an absolute monster after the catch and can drag a defender (sometimes two defenders) twenty or thirty yards with ease. He has a solid receiving skillset and is not afraid to go over the middle. Fantastic red zone target. Routinely goes up high for jump ball catches. Typically wins any contested catch. Very good blocker, but still some room for improvement.

Other Possible Picks:
Riley Ridley, WR, Georgia
Caleb Wilson, TE, UCLA
D'Andre Walker, OLB, Georgia
Andy Isabella, WR, Massachusetts
Rock Ya-Sin, CB, Temple
Ryan Finley, QB, North Carolina St.
Brett Rypien, QB, Boise St.
Deionte Thompson, FS, Alabama
Juan Thornhill, SS, Virginia
Jaylon Ferguson, OLB, Louisiana Tech
Connor McGovern, OC/OG, Penn St.
Michael Deiter, OG, Wisconsin

Round Three (Comp Pick): Nasir Adderly, FS/SS, Delaware
Adderly has been steadily rising on draft boards and for good reason. He is a solid safety and would be a superb replacement for Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix. Very good speed and rapidly closes on running backs coming out of the backfield. Able to routinely shut down tight ends or limit their yardage. Rarely goes for a big hit and is much more interested in batting passes and collecting interceptions. Has cornerback experience, but is better suited as a safety. Superb tackler. Fundamentally sound.

Round Four: Tytus Howard, OT, Alabama St.
Howard is a talented, but somewhat raw prospect at the tackle position. He is not a long term starter, but is better suited to being a backup swing tackle in the future. He will need some extra time to adjust to the league, but he could be called upon later in the season for spot duty. Excellent size. A younger version of Ty Nsekhe, but with a higher ceiling. Demonstrates good footwork and creates leverage, but only if he is established in his stance first. Howard will need to learn that speed rushers are much faster in the NFL and realize that weak FCS competition is many steps lower. With good coaching, Howard may carve out a career of ten years or more.

Possible Picks:
David Sills, WR, West Virginia
Jalen Jelks, OLB, Oregon
Elijah Holyfield, RB, Georgia
Jarrett Stidham, QB, Auburn
Jalen Hurd, WR, Baylor
Isaac Nauta, TE, Georgia
Darrell Henderson, RB, Memphis
DaMarkus Lodge, WR, Mississippi
Hakeem Butler, WR, Iowa St.
Clayton Thorson, QB, Northwestern

Round Five: Max Scharping, OT/OG, Northern Illinois
Max Scharping is a good tackle, but he has the skills and traits that will likely move him to the inside at the next level. A bit too stiff to play tackle in the NFL, but he would be much better inside. Good in pass protection. Good in the rushing offense. Would need a year in the league in order to adjust to the next level. Could be a reliable left guard after learning the position. Excellent size. Smart player and quick learner – with such traits, he could be a starter by mid-season.

Other Possible Picks:
Foster Moreau, TE, LSU
Christian Miller, OLB, Alabama
Iman Marshall, CB, Southern California
Dexter Williams, RB, Notre Dame
Khalen Saunders, DT, Western Illinois
Carl Granderson, OLB, Wyoming
Austin Bryant, OLB, Clemson
Devine Ozigbo, RB, Nebraska
Juwan Johnson, WR, Penn St.
Corbin Kaufusi, DE, Brigham Young
Trace McSorley, QB, Penn St.
Easton Stick, QB, North Dakota St.

Round Five (Comp Pick): Lester Cotton, OG, Alabama
Cotton is a sizable guard that is very strong and rarely makes crippling mistakes. Great presence on the inside. Average speed, but can pull effectively to either side when needed. Has played against quality competition in the SEC and held his own each season. He can have dominant streaks, but is mostly a solid guard who is better in the rushing offense and needs some work in pass protection.

Round Six (Comp Pick): Olamide Zaccheaus, WR, Virginia
How would you like a receiver who has running back skills and combines his talents to look like a Larry Centers and Chris Thompson type of player? Highly underrated. Lack of height will hurt him in the draft (5'8”, 200), but he has the speed and power to be a much more durable player than Thompson. He has been the leading receiver for Virginia over the years.

Other Possible Picks:
Chuma Edoga, OT, Southern Cal
Mecole Harman, WR, Georgia
Myles Gaskin, RB, Washington
Gardner Minshew, QB, Washington St.
Jonathan Ledbetter, DE, Georgia
Emanuel Hall, WR, Missouri
Garrett Brumfield, OG, Louisiana St.
Kingsley Keke, DE/DT, Texas A&M
Wes Hills, RB, Slippery Rock

Round Seven: Joe Dineen, ILB, Kansas
Joe Dineen is a tackling machine and is superb in both the rushing defense and pass coverage. However, he will need to make his marks on special teams early in his career. He is deceptively quick and rarely makes mistakes. If Dineen can find his niche as a special teamer and as a quality backup as a linebacker, then his career in the NFL could be a lengthy stay.

Other Possible Picks:
Jaylen Smith, WR, Louisville
Diontae Johnson, WR, Toledo
Bryce Love, RB, Stanford
Ului Lapuaho, OT, BYU
Olive Sagapolu, DT, Wisconsin
Nate Herbig, OG, Stanford
Ulysees Gilbert, ILB, Akron
Keelan Doss, WR, California, Davis
Daylon Mack, DT, Texas A&M
Kendall Blanton, TE, Missouri

Round Seven (Comp Pick): Eric Dungey, QB, Syracuse
The quarterback situation is more settled than a week ago, but there are still some question marks. Dungey (6'4”, 230) improved significantly over the previous three seasons and had a solid 2018 – including a bowl victory for the Orange. He will need plenty of work, but has a lot of potential.

In Conclusion:

The compensatory picks are now official. The Redskins comp picks are as follows: Rounds 3, 5, 6, and 7. Mocks in the middle of March look much different than mocks in late April. For now, we can only speculate based on current team needs and performance to date.

There is your latest mock today. We will have another mock next Friday. The following week we will go to two mocks. The mocks will continue to be posted this spring and the volume of mocks will increase as we get closer to the draft.

Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

DRC is going to be a Redskin per reports.

So is he a starter, vet depth, or what? Could his signing signal they are going to offer up Norman as part of a trade (either for WR or Rosen)?

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

I would like to find a way to separate from Norman.

Now that Swearinger and Brown are gone Norman is the remaining one of that group that decided last year to blast the city and fans that watched him drag his sorry ass onto the field the past couple of years.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

I personally think it would be bad news for the Redskins if a DRC acquisition is for purposes of possibly replacing Josh Norman. Sure, Norman has never given us the proper "bang for your buck" in his time here, but he's a more than adequate starting corner in the NFL. Can you say the same about DRC at this point in his career, considering the fact that he's coming off a partial retirement?

To me, DRC is best used as a Swiss army knife type in the secondary. He gives you some depth at corner and free safety, can play the slot in a pinch, and on top of all that, can offer some tutelage to some of our still developing players such as Johnson, Stroman, and Dunbar.

I like the signing provided we are not counting on this guy to start for 16 weeks.

Agree - he's almost certainly just a depth signing the more I look at it...

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

The Giants talked about moving DRC to safety.
I don't know if they ever did though.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

At 6'2 and 203 he looks like a ‘cover' safety to me and insurance on the outside.
