Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

Long signed a 4 year, $27 mil deal with the Jets. Now the contract breaks waaaayy down and is essentially a 1 year, $6+ mil deal, with the first being the only year that's actually guaranteed. That on the surface appears to be something we could have managed. If he's on the roster the day after the SB, then he's due another $3 mil in base, and if he's on the team THROUGH next season, the deal ends up being 2 years for $13.125 mil.

The deal LOOKS inflated, but it's actually pretty team friendly, since they can get out of it any time after this season with 0 dead cap money.

Thanks. That looks like a deal that the Redskins could have gotten done, if they so desired, since our contract specialists are really good at constructing team-friendly deals. Also, if I remember correctly, Long was injured part of last year, so that should have made it easier to get a
team-friendly deal done.

Spencer Long is a replacement level player. No reason to extend a multi-year offer to a guy who played better at center (which we already have a younger starter) than guard and who also has a habit of getting dinged and missing time.

I still thought the team could find other options in veteran free agency on a one year bridge deal and not have to bring Lauvao back, and given where we are in the preseason and before final cuts that still may happen.

I don't think Gruden or Williams can be comfortable with the OL depth we have behind the starters inside. Nsekhe and Christian look like a capable tandem backing up the OTs but at OC and OG trying to depend upon a Tyler Catalina or Tony Bergstrom could be problematic.

Spencer Long got rocked a few times by Settle tonight. Was great to see!

Cam Sims planted his flag in the ground tonight and made the case he belongs on the 53. Had the one bad play where he batted the ball up for the INT but more than made up for it the rest of the game with some tough catches and the key catch that set them up for the winning field goal.

Dline and Sims showed well tonight.

I expect to see Sims on the 53 man roster projection.
In place of Quick, IMO.
And I would also remove Blanding from the roster.
And that INT by Prince Charles was beautiful, as was his tight coverage the whole play.
He probably has no chance at the 53, but he IS eligible for the PS, and I'd like to see him there.

Watched last nights game and it made me yearn for the season to come around faster! I miss having the chat room to enjoy the games with you guys! :D

Observations and opinions...

I WANT Mr Irrelevant on the roster and I think he'll be there. I know he's not the fastest or most athletic etc etc, but there's something about him for me that feels like he's going to be good for this team. An intangible I can't put my finger on but I want that intangible on my team. He impressed me last night.

That D-Line of Payne, Allen, Smith and Kerrigan.... oooof. Looks good. I can't wait to see them line up more for real in the regular season. I always thought they would be good, but now I'm feeling like we might have something special on the line, and we have depth there too.

If that's the case, then I expect our secondary will feed off that. FTS is right, Prince looked good on the Int, and I think if we can put a lot of pressure on the QB our DB's could feast this year. Fingers crossed.

What is it with RB's and injuries with this team? Glad Perine and Marshall are ok. Bibbs impressed me.

Our receiving corps might not be the best in the league, but it's looking deep. I agree with FTS I think Sims makes the roster and Quick doesn't. Between Doctson, Crowder, Reed, Davis, Sims, Quinn.... I think we'll end up with a pretty versatile corps in the season, and I think Smith will be happy spreading the ball around. We might not have a 1000 yard receiver, but I think we have multiples with mid to high yardage counts. Sims especially impressed me with his bounce back from that tipped catch interception.

Smith looked sharp in his drive, I'm unconcerned about him hitting the ground running and McCoy looked good too. Hogan.... not so much, but did at least get us the game winning drive.

Hogan improved from the 1st game. BB said he's eligible for the PS. (I think)
So, he'll either be there, or gone.

Colt had another good game. He is definitely one the top backup QB's in the league.

A healthy mix/rotation of Allen, Payne, Ion, and Settle should start to take us back to the days of Butz & Grant.
When running up the gut on us was a tough row to hoe.

Pretty good game, overall. And no serious injuries.

Except for one good pass to Kelly, and one good run by Perrine, the run game is still anemic. Kelly really doesn't have patience or vision. He runs up on the back of his blockers too often.

Kelly lacks both patience and vision and he hits the hole even softer than TJ Duckett.

Ok, I'm a little rusty at this, but this is what I think:

This team is going to live and die with that D-Line. If this team is going to win, the DL has to be as good as it looks right now. It's really hard to know against the Jets in pre-season, but it looks promising.

Smith look like a perfectly adequate QB. That's nice. Our OL should be able to give him time, and that's good too. Teams can make the playoffs with a QB and a DL.

I am not inspired by anything else so far. The WRs look like a bunch of backups battling for the #3 ,4, and 5 spots. And that's because they are. Sims made some nice plays, but man, that drop was BRUTAL. Absolutely awful. He can't do that again for the rest of the pre-season. Hopefully it was just jitters or something.

Our RBs ... yikes. Between being stuck with Kelly as our top back and Gruden not knowing how to put together a running game anyway ... I am not looking forward to this team running the ball this year.

Anyway, it's hard to really know this early. Let's hope that DL is the real deal.

Exciting times...…..nice game last night!

It sucks to lose Guice, but I like what I saw from the other RBs too.

And after what seems like twenty years, we actually have a strong DL. Very encouraging indeed.

"It's going to be a problem!"

No Viagra, No Cialis needed.

I'm no expert, but I was listening to Riggo on the pre-game radio show yesterday evening. He stated that he looked at some tape (first preseason game) and thought Kelly/Perrine were making good cuts. I was surprised to hear him state he thought the problem was that there were guys on the o-line who just weren't good run blockers. He had good things to say about Scherff and Roullier, but not the others. I know, Trent?

The Redskins need to sign a veteran running back before the season starts. Maybe a trade, maybe a waiver claim or late cut.

But this stable of running backs is not durable as a group and their production on the field is either disappointing or largely unproven.

It would be irresponsible of Gruden and Co. to go into the season with a running attack which is at #31 or #32 in the NFL.

That's putting too much responsibility on Alex Smith and a young group of wide receivers.

"When the Patriots cut one or two of their rbs,go sign one of them, cause they'll be able to play"- Charlie Weiss,NFL Radio this morning talking about Skins rb depth.

I wouldn't spend anything higher than a 5th rounder on a RB, considering he's just a 1 year rental.
In fact I wouldn't spend anything on one.
There's bound to be a good one that one of the other 31 teams cuts and plans to PS him.

Henry gets it. We aren't a power rushing team. We aren't going to be a power rushing team. Even if we had Guice this year, we'd pass way more than we'd run it. That's just Gruden's offense, whether you love it or hate it.

Guice will be back next year and we'll see what we've got in him. But panicking and trading away future assets to fill a 1 season void is what the old Redskins FO would do. It also ignores the probability that no RB significantly more talented than the ones we already have is going to be had for any reasonable price.

Maybe we'll be 31st in the league in rushing again. But I'm betting we're a lot better than that if we aren't hiring hardware salesmen off the street to replace OL IR guys halfway through the season. I'll be disappointed if we do another Scandrick deal just to reassure ourselves that we are okay at RB.

Only caveat - if Byron or Samaje look like they won't be ready for the regular season opener. That could force us to pick up someone. But I still hope we resist the urge.

Gotta say - Kelley is looking really tentative in the pre-season carries he's had so far. He turned his back to the defenders a number of times last night, something you rarely saw him do pre-injury. Don't know if he's just trying to protect himself or what, but he certainly isn't looking like the guy we saw in 2016. Maybe he'll turn it on and be more aggressive when the games count. But hard to be impressed with him so far. Perine looks like someone shot out of a cannon in the limited reps I've seen. As someone else said - we may have written him off too quickly and we may find he's not the Matt Jones lookalike we've all pegged him as ... I thought Bibbs looked okay last night, but he's a tiny guy - and if he makes the team you can't count on him for significant carries. Marshall looks great at times, and lackluster at others. I'm not as enamored of him as some seem to be. Martez looks surprisingly good. I'd like to see more of him against first team defenders.

Manusky will be gone next year. But it's okay.
If these DL studs make us a Top 5 defense, some team out there will think that Manusky was partially responsible and offer him a HC job.
If we DON'T end up with a Top 5 defense, he'll be fired for failing to fully utilize such tremendous talent.
Either way, Manusky is gone. But like I said, it's okay, because then we promote Gray to DC, and for once, we don't let hot talent that we groomed, just get away from us.

They won't fire him, but I guess it's possible you could be right about HC opportunities. Thing is, not every coordinator WANTS to be a HC. No idea if that's his ultimate goal, but I don't think he's got the stature yet to be a serious contender for a HC job. This is his 4th DC job in a decade. The Redskins would have to win the Super Bowl for him to get that kind of attention imho. At least I hope that's the case :)
