REDSKINS RE-SIGN LB MASON FOSTER

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have re-signed linebacker Mason Foster. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Foster (6-1, 250) originally entered the NFL as a third-round selection (84th overall) of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2011 NFL Draft. He joined the Redskins as a free agent in Week 4 of the 2015 season, appearing in 13 games during the team's 2015 NFC East title run.

For his career, Foster has played in 91 regular season games with 76 starts, compiling 528 tackles (374 solo), 16 passes defensed, 7.5 sacks, six interceptions (including two returned for touchdowns), four forced fumbles and four fumbles recovered. Despite being limited to 34 games, his 187 tackles (134 solo) since joining the Redskins in 2015 are the third-most by a member of the Redskins in that time frame.

Foster played collegiately at Washington, totaling 378 career tackles (241 solo), 10.5 sacks, 15 passes defensed, eight forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and four interceptions for the Huskies. In 2010, he served as a team captain and finished first in the Pac-10 and second in the nation with 163 tackles.

Foster, 28, attended Seaside (Calif.) H.S., where he was named the Monterey County Player of the Year by the Monterey Herald after playing both linebacker and quarterback. He was born March 1, 1989.

Our pass defense suffered greatly when Foster finally succumbed to his injuries and went on IR.

He was really the only inside linebacker on the team with cover skills.

Compton can't cover anyone. Zach Brown is often targeted by opponents on third downs. Martrell Spaight to me is an early down run defender and special teamer, not a three down candidate.

The Redskins need to find another ILB to pair with Foster, preferably one that is a three down performer who isn't a liability vs the pass.

When Allen, brown and foster were in the game the first 3 weeks the redskins gave up 2.9 rushing yards a game when they all were injured I think it was 3.9.

To me if a top DL is not on the board for us at #13 we need to consider Smith or another ILB.

The gaps in our defense stem largely from a lack of depth and talent across the board in the DL and in not having linebackers that can adequately defend the pass.

Tight ends like Zach Ertz, Greg Olsen, etc. seem to always burn us whenever we play them.

And in many cases the coverage is not even close on them, they end up wide open for easy first down conversions and drive making plays.
