Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

I keep seeing Hockenson projected 2nd but you are consistently keeping him in the options for 1sr round pick? You think he's a 1st rounder?

If so, I'd be very tempted to take him. Look how valuable Gronkowski has been to the Patriots. Word is Hockenson plays every down like Gronk, although Gronk is not every single down anymore...just most snaps in a game when healthy. Still, a bog boy like that helps in the run, and is a nightmare for defenses in pass pro.

Yes, he is a first rounder. Thinking of putting Noah Fant as a second round possibility. This is the time of year when I get up at dawn on Saturday, then spend all morning going through various positions. Tomorrow will be devoted to tight ends - watching all the videos and reading every scouting report. Breakfast break at 8am.

But first, here is some eye candy for you. There is something about Iowa linemen and tight ends that translates to success in the NFL. Take a look at Hockenson here. Are any of you drooling yet?

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Interesting. No room for CB or Safety BB?

If you're on track, that means keeping Ha Ha.....and hoping Dunbar can stick with the better receivers in the league. I suppose another year for the CB draftees from last year might help. Not optimistic. But who knows.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

ahem: see if he did the same against Ohio State, Michigan or PSU!

I watched a couple Iowa games, and he stood out.

Edit: A man among boys in that clip.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

We have a ton of corners. No need to add any. Fabian Moreau improved considerably down the stretch and could start across from Josh Norman or Quinton Dunbar. Any of these three players could now start in the slot. It's a good problem to have. Greg Stroman did have the blown coverage that we all remember, but it was his only glaring mistake last year - he is a good corner.

Clinton-Dix is likely to re-sign. Montae Nicholson could move to SS and be effective there. Adonis Alexander could move to safety as well - he is quite versatile and improved down the stretch as well. Deshazor Everett is a great special teamer, but is also effective in spot duty at SS.

I'm not ruling out a run at Landon Collins - he would be a superb SS.

Ok, maybe a block on a 230 lb OLB is not the most impressive we've ever seen, but how about a 270 lb DE?

Nice!

You are the bees knees BB.

I knew you were doing TE's tomorrow so I wanted to make you get an early start. :)

Thanks. I will hit the ground running in the morning. Did some preliminary work this afternoon.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Looks like he's the real deal!

As for our secondary, I'm not onboard yet BB. I thought there was substantial improvement last pre-season, but as the season wore on, I thought everything about the secondary got worse with each game. We have no shutdown corners. Norman may have been one at one time, be he sure wasn't last season. I think we still have significant problems in the secondary - no one stands out to me. That said, if I have to chose, I'm for the line out on offense and defense. Only "skill" player I'd draft is a WR - the Skins, of course, have a horrendous history at that particular position.

Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land and guests from social media – we hope you become a member here.

Today, we bring you the latest guest mock of the off-season and it comes from a Redskins fan who knows her football – Dr. Dana Sparkman from deep in the Heart of Dixie. She calls central Alabama her home and has been a Redskins fan for many years. Dr. Sparkman is smarter than all of us combined! Ok, maybe not, but she completed undergraduate studies at the University of North Alabama, then moved north to Syracuse, NY where she obtained a graduate degree from Syracuse University – Dr. Sparkman has a soft spot in her heart for the Orange basketball team. After returning home to Alabama, this southern belle went on to earn her doctorate from the University of Alabama. You see where this is going, right? Yes, Dr. Sparkman is very knowledgeable about her beloved Crimson Tide and is excited about the number of players from Alabama on the Redskins roster.

Even though she is a respected college professor, Dr. Sparkman is an avid Redskins fan who prefers that you call her Dana. BBQ offered to help her a bit with the mock, but she came armed with excellent knowledge on many of the prospects and handled it all like a seasoned pro. She also provided something extra after the seventh and final selection.

BBQ will continue the guest mocks each week until early April and we will feature a Redskins fan/mock specialist. It became a popular feature last year and we are happy to bring it back to BGO.

In this mock from Dana, she looks to the SEC for several prospects, but it wasn't as Alabama-centric as you may think. I enjoyed learning about her mock and I hope you will enjoy it as well. Oh, and don't utter a word to her about Clemson!

Be sure to follow her on twitter at:
https://twitter.com/dana4bama

Without any further delays, let's take a look at Dana's mock and extra surprise.

Dana's Seven Round Mock:

Round 1 – Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama
Dana knows Alabama players like the back of her hand and going with a stud offensive lineman from the Crimson Tide is a good thing. He could step in at right tackle from day one.

Round 2 – Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, SS, Florida
If Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix returns, the Redskins could have two starting safeties with hyphenated last names. I like her thinking here. Anyway, this is a very good choice in round two. Over the weekend, BBQ has added him as a player to watch in round two, so look for it in the mock on Friday.

Round 3 – Riley Ridley, WR, Georgia
Dana selects the talented receiver from archrival Georgia. You know this had to be a difficult choice, but it is a solid one and Ridley would provide good value here.

Round 3 (Comp Pick) – D'Andre Walker, OLB, Georgia
Staying with athletes in the SEC, Dana selects the heralded edge rusher from Georgia. Are you surprised? Wow! Two Bulldogs in a row! Walker could go earlier in the draft, but if he is still available at his juncture, the Redskins should be running to the podium.

Round 5 – Brett Rypien, QB, Boise St.
Showing good restraint by not chasing a quarterback too early, Dana chooses the signal caller from Boise. Will he last this long? Dana thinks so and who are we to argue?

Round 5 (Comp Pick) – Corbin Kaufusi, DE, Brigham Young.
This was the only pick that I helped her with when discussing the choice. In all fairness, she forgot about the comp pick in this round, but you can scroll back and read what I have written about Kaufusi.

Round 6 (Comp Pick) – Foster Moreau, TE, Louisiana St.
Returning to the SEC, Dana takes a flyer on the tall, bulky, and talented tight end from the Cajun County Bayou Bengals.

Round 7 – Elijah Holyfield, RB, Georgia
Can you believe it??? A third player from Georgia??? I know for a fact that Dana will never trade in her fandom of Alabama football, but she is picking the best players possible for the Redskins – you've got to give her credit for making these choices. I have Holyfield rated as a fourth rounder, but you never know when an athlete could get selected lower than expected – just as she is thinking here.

The Extra Surprise
UDFA: Nick Fitzgerald, QB, Mississippi St.
Dana wanted to mock one UDFA for the Redskins and added a second quarterback. The position has a bunch of question marks this off-season and adding a second signal caller is not a bad idea.

BBQ's Thoughts:
Thanks to Dana for all of her research and a superb mock. If these three Georgia players are selected by the Redskins, she should be a permanent guest mocker each year. Heck, maybe another guest appearance next month? What say you members of BGO? Dana put a lot of thought and work to this mock – thank you, Dr. Sparkman. Feel free to comment on any aspect of what she mocked to the Redskins.

BBQ will have a free agency update tomorrow and a mock draft on Friday.

Again, be sure to follow Dana on twitter at:

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Free Agency update is postponed until tomorrow. The Joe Flacco trade to the Broncos is an interesting development and while it doesn't have an effect on the Redskins now, it could have effects in the coming days. Another day is needed to get a feel for things.

Be sure to take a look at the previous post - a guest mock. She put a lot of work into it and comments are more than appreciated. Thanks, everyone.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Position wise I really like Dana's mock, especially if the team takes a tackle and moves Trent to Guard.

It's also nice for the ponies to fill their qb need and allows possible qb's to fall to us. I still think if Lock or Jones is there when we pick we should pull the trigger. Hell I wouldn't mind taking the Grim Rypper as well in the 4th or 5th.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Dana - thanks so much for the great mock! I love the 'big ugly' selection early. The Redskins have made a lot of poor decisions over the past 20 years, but rebuilding the O and D Lines the past several drafts by going ugly early have ranked among their best moves. If we elect to make our 1st and/or 2nd rounders linemen, I'm down with it. I don't think Rypien lasts that long, but I do think he has dark horse potential. If we are going to draft a QB this year, do it early and get a guy who is a real starter, not a 'project'. The Redskins have struggled enough finding QBs in early rounds - the chances they find one in round 5 or beyond are slim to none imho.

I've previously advocated they draft several young QBs. How about Daniel Jones AND Brett Rypien and see which guy proves to be an NFL starter. It's a low-risk move since if they both show promise you would no doubt have trade offers.

Will definitely take a look at the players you've highlighted and thanks again for the great mock!

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Thanks Dana. I too like building up our lines. And, getting our running game up to snuff. Need another Don Warren at TE to do that. Along with at least an NFL caliber LG.
But unlike Boone, the only QB I'd consider drafting this year would be a project. Colt's gonna start. JJ or some other journeyman will be the backup. 2020 will be the time to invest in a serious attempt at drafting a franchise QB. Unless our project from this year turns out to be a good project.

We'll know by then Alex's future. We'll also be bringing in a new coaching staff. Let them pick their own QB.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

You want to see another 11 games with JJ starting? You're even a bigger glutton for punishment than I am Ax :). That's what happens if they go with Colt because there's no way he lasts more than a stretch of games healthy.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

No doubt Colt likely can't complete a season. JJ is only other QB with knowledge of Gruden's system. It's the ONLY reason he's even a possibility. But Jay knows that his only shot at keeping his job, is Colt being able to play most of the season. And JJ filling in for a game or 3. And, hopefully he knows, the only way to increase Colt's chance of staying healthy is to focus on the run game. Fix LG, for Buddha's sake. Also draft a top notch tackle who can either beat out Moses, allow us to move Trent to guard, or be a starter in waiting. Get 2 TE's, how doesn't matter, that can friggin block. Re-sign Peterson, and hope Guice can be what we all hope he can. If the Oline is stout, then you can get by with lesser talent at QB, and RB.

And strengthen the defense as much as possible.
A 5th round, or later QB, can learn enough to hand the ball off, for now.
I wish I had some faith in Gruden. But I don't. I've been hoping for him to prove me wrong since his first season. He's failed, miserably.
So, hope is all I got.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

No mock today or FA updates this week. Everything returns at the usual times next week.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Seen a few mocks now with us taking Daniel Jones in the 1st. You guys break it down much further than I do but I think we could win with this kid. Also seems Duke has a few sticky handed receivers we may wanna bring in too.

Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land and guests from social media – we hope you become a member here.

Today, we bring you the latest guest mock of the off-season and it comes from a Redskins fan and pundit – Mark Tyler of Hogs Haven, where is the lead author, editor, and moderator. He provides draft analytics, free agency articles, and detailed insights on the Redskins for Hogs Haven on a daily basis. From the heart of the Keystone State, Mark is a fan of the Penn St. Nittany Lions and his children are future athletes to watch.

I contacted Mark early last week and he was more than happy to provide the latest guest mock. He went above and beyond the call of duty with a meticulous look at free agency and then he provided BBQ with a mock that included a prognostication of the first fourteen picks. From there, our latest guest mock specialist went directly into what the Redskins could do in late April – all of it with a thorough look at each prospect. As you will see, Hogs Haven has a great leader and dedicated football expert in Mark Tyler.

BBQ will continue the guest mocks each week until early April and we will feature a Redskins fan/mock specialist. It became a popular feature last year and we are happy to bring it back to BGO.

In this mock from Mark, he looks across the college football landscape for several prospects and he did include a player from Penn St., but let's be honest - that prospect is a solid choice. I enjoyed looking at his mock and I hope you will enjoy it as well.

Without any further delays, let's take a look at Mark's mock.

Mark's Seven Round Mock:

2019 Off-Season:

Redskins extend:
Brandon Scherff - 5 years, $65 million ($8 million cap hit in 2019)

Redskins re-structure:
Jordan Reed - $2.5 million savings

Redskins release:
Josh Norman - $8.5 million savings
Stacy McGee - $2.3 million savings
Vernon Davis - $5 million savings
Zach Brown - $5.75 million savings
Mason Foster - $2 million savings

Redskins re-sign:
HaHa Clinton-Dix – 4 years, $32 million ($5 million cap hit in 2019)
Arie Kouandjio - 2 years, $5 million ($2 million cap hit in 2019)
Adrian Peterson – 1 year, $3.5 million (incentive based)
Zach Vigil - 1 year, $1 million ($1 million cap hit in 2019)

UFA Signings:
Shane Ray EDGE
Jesse James TE
Darqueze Dennard CB
Kwon Alexander ILB

2019 NFL Draft (Top 15 picks):
1 - Cardinals: Nick Bosa EDGE Ohio St.
2 - 49ers: Josh Allen EDGE Kentucky
3 - Jets: Quinnen Williams DT Alabama
4 - Raiders: Ed Oliver DT Houston
5 - Buccaneers: Greedy Williams CB LSU
6 - Giants: Dwayne Haskins QB Ohio St.
7 - Jaguars: (acquire Nick Foles via trade) - Jawaan Taylor OT Florida
8 - Lions: Montez Sweat EDGE Miss St
9 - Bills: Jonah Williams OT Alabama
10 - Broncos: Cody Ford OT Oklahoma
11 - Bengals: Devin White LB LSU
12 - Packers: Jachai Polite EDGE Florida
13 - Dolphins: Kyler Murray QB Oklahoma
14 - Falcons: Christian Wilkins DT Clemson

15 - Redskins: Drew Lock QB Missouri
Lock has the prototypical size NFL teams are looking for, and an absolute cannon for an arm. Despite the dip in stats from his junior year, I thought Lock progressed as a passer, improving his pocket presence, progressions and release. He didn't have a great supporting cast at Missouri, but he looked good during the week of practice at the Senior Bowl working with much better overall talent.

RD 2: Deebo Samuel WR S. Carolina – The Skins need playmakers on offense, and Samuel offers them just that. He has good size (6'0” 215) and great run-after-the-catch ability. He could line up all over the formation to create mismatches.

RD 3: Michael Deiter OG Wisc. – Deiter has great size (6'6” 321) and very powerful hands. He's not the most nimble of foot, but once he latches on to a defender, he knows how to finish. He comes from an O-line factory at Wisconsin and should be physically and mentally prepared to step into a starting role as a rookie.

RD 3 (projected comp pick): Amani Hooker SS Iowa – Hooker is a versatile safety who can play in the box, or as part of a tandem in a two-deep look. He is good when asked to blitz, and can be used as a robber in underneath coverage due to his solid instincts and ability to break on underneath routes.

RD 5: Dax Raymond TE Utah St. – Raymond is still a work in progress as a route runner, but he has strong hands and will fight for extra yardage after the catch. He's a willing blocker, who uses his hands and leverage on reach blocks.

RD 5 (projected comp pick): Blace Brown CB Troy – Brown is a tall, athletic small-school corner with good press-man coverage ability and plus ball skills, who has the ability to be a starter in the right system down the road.

RD 6 (projected comp pick): Shareef Miller EDGE PSU – Miller could have benefitted from another year in college to refine his game, but the Junior has some skills that will translate well to the NFL. He's a long, rangy athlete, with a great motor and good fundamental strength at the point of attack.

RD 7: Derwin Gray OT Maryland – Gray is a developmental prospect who could fight for a spot on the two deep at offensive tackle, or even kick inside to guard.

BBQ's Thoughts:
Thanks to Mark for all of his research and a superb look at free agency and what the Redskins could do in the draft. He put a lot of thought and work to this mock – thank you, Mark. Feel free to comment on any aspect of what he mocked to the Redskins.

BBQ will have a free agency update tomorrow and a mock draft on Friday.
