Burner's Burning Questions: Grades, Evals, Questions, Regular Season, 2018

Week Two

Greetings to everyone here in BGO land and greetings to all of our friends on social media. We hope you become a member of the family here.

The jubilation of week one turned into the scorn and disappointment of week two. The fans are suddenly not happy at all. However, our thoughts are also focused on those who were in the path of Hurricane Florence. We hope areas affected can get the help and support that is needed.

Week two is in the books and now we take a look at how the entire team fared against the Indianapolis Colts. The season opened on a high note last week, but it quickly cratered in week two. We will try to make some sense of it all as BBQ hands out grades, evaluations, and questions. Feel free to offer your own grades, evaluations, questions, and opinions.

Let's take a look at week two.

Quarterbacks:
Question: Do we miss Kirk Cousins?
Answer: Another question focusing on the former quarterback? Really? The receivers did Alex Smith no favors on Sunday, but he did look a bit lost against a solid defensive effort from the Colts.
Grade: C-

Running Backs:
Question: What happened?
Answer: They ran into a brick wall and the blocking was horrible. Chris Thompson had a six yard gain on a pass in the second half and somehow turned it into a three yard loss. A player named “Crowder” was the leading rusher.
Grade: D+

Wide Receivers:
Question: Was there anything good from this group on Sunday?
Answer: The uniforms looked nice. There were a couple of solid completions, but not much else.
Grade: D-

Tight Ends:
Question: Does anyone with this unit know how to block?
Answer: Not too much was generated from the tight ends and, yes, the blocking was suspect. Jeremy Sprinkle missed a blitz that seemed almost blatant.
Grade: F

Offensive Line:
Question: What happened to make them megastars one week and megabums the following week?
Answer: They simply did a poor job on Sunday and couldn't handle the pressure against the front four of the Colts. They better find some answers as quickly as possible.
Grade: F

Defensive Line:
Question: What grade would you give their effort against the Colts?
Answer: A failing grade is not right, but an excellent grade is out of the question. They need to get more pressure on the quarterback. Also, this unit needs to be set in their alignment instead of looking clueless when the ball is snapped.
Grade: C

Linebackers:
Question: The good, the bad, and the ugly – which one was it?
Answer: The inside linebackers were solid, but the outside linebackers had issues. Ryan Kerrigan has been absent the first two games of the season and suddenly looks like a forty-year-old retiree out there.
Grade: C+

Cornerbacks:
Question: Did this group look like it lost its way on Sunday or what?
Answer: It looked like a group of keystone cops at times. Simple routes from the tight ends and wide receivers looked easy for the Colts. The corners could not shed blocks on several running plays.
Grade: D-

Safeties:
Question: How did D.J. Swearinger and Montae Nicholson perform on Sunday?
Answer: This was the best unit on the field. Swearinger (two interceptions) was a ballhawk for the entire game and Nicholson was constantly making solid plays. Great all-around effort.
Grade: A

Special Teams:
Question: Are the coaches looking at other placekickers?
Answer: Probably not, but Dustin Hopkins needed to hit that field goal attempt at the end of the first half. It drained the team of any momentum to start the second half. Greg Stroman was not spectacular in his debut, but he made no egregious errors as well.
Grade: C+

Coaching:
Question: What can we say about the coaches for this second game of 2018?
Answer: Offense. The game plan was not executed as planned and there were no effective adjustments made at halftime. Poor play calling on a third and one – a pitch to Chris Thompson nine yards behind the line of scrimmage was ill-advised. Calling for a fade route at the ten yard line was simply wrong. Those plays are typically called inside the five yard line.

Defense. The defense did a respectable job, but was not helped with the debacle that was occurring on offense. There were several times when the defense was not set when the ball was hiked. Great effort on turnovers and keeping the Redskins in the game.

Special teams. A missed opportunity to gain momentum in the second half was quickly diminished with a Dustin Hopkins missed field goal at the end of the first half. Otherwise, this unit was steady.
Grade: C

How would you grade each position and the coaching staff? How do you feel about this team after the first loss of the 2018 season? Will the defense continue with their impressive stats? Are you concerned with the play of the wide receivers? What is going on with Ryan Kerrigan? What are you expecting on Sunday against the Packers? What kind of impact would a victory or loss against the Packers have for the Redskins? On to game three. We'll see you next week with grades, evaluations, and questions.

Hail to the Redskins!

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: News, Grades, Evals, Questions, Regular Season, 2018

The Redskins need to move Jordan Reed outside and bring in Davis to play TE.

The team is getting no production from Crowder, who seems to be getting further away from that 2016 season.

I remember reading an article in the offseason that said the team should be working on new deals to lock up Crowder and Preston Smith.

Really?

What have these guys done to date that warrants that kind of longer term commitment?

These are two more guys you can add in with Doctson that were McCloughan's ‘genius' picks.

If Doctson and Smith were living up to their draft position and athletic ability on the field this team would be a lot further along than it is.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: News, Grades, Evals, Questions, Regular Season, 2018

Breshad Perriman was released. Kapri Bibbs is now promoted from the practice squad to the roster.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: News, Grades, Evals, Questions, Regular Season, 2018

Again, when you draft a receiver in the first round and have him on the field a couple of years later and still are looking for guys on the outside you can depend upon for production, you are in a world of hurt.

I didn't see Doctson coming in this year and doing more than he did last year. He looks like the same guy on the field, so much for year over year improvement.

More than anything he just doesn't look uber competitive - that the lack of touches and targets and his own mistakes on those plays where the ball does head his way - these circumstances don't bring out the 'dog' in him. He seems emotionless and passionless.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: News, Grades, Evals, Questions, Regular Season, 2018

I'm pretty sure remember Ryman being pretty strongly against the trade. I remember something about not drafting black QBs or redheads. :)

I also remember him advocating, VERY strongly, building from the lines out, and getting QB only when those lines were set.

I don't know that I agree with that thinking, even now, but that's what he said.

I have always advocated building the lines first, our issues with the defence for almost 2 decades was that we kept getting great secondary players like springs, bailey and even our no hands CB who couldnt catch a cold but could cover anyone lol. we had solid linebackers, great secondary players and never great Tackles and only once in a while did we have solid De's. we got a great pass rush a couple seasons with Gregg but we only got pressure with blitzes. then we had finally built a solid dline and signed haynesworth and thats when shamahan decided to run a 3-4 lol Our Olines were always overrated, we literally never had 5 good olinemen, usually we had 2 and sometimes 3 good ones, and the rest were hot garbage. all the great dynasties built their lines and then filled in everything else. I think if you have a solid oline in place, you can give your young qb a better chance to not get shitcanned and ruin his confidence lol

I'm with you on the line focus Ryman. Drafting bullies up front and sprinkling in some big & powerful rb`s would make me giddy.

After recent focus on the d-line we can only hope it spreads over to the piglet drafting this spring.

Bye Week, 2019 Mock Draft

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land and guests from social media – we hope you become a member here.

The 2018 season enters its fourth week and the Redskins have an early bye. A 2-1 start brings optimism to some fans, but others are a bit guarded. Having a mock this early in the season is a bit unusual, but the early bye is here and we are making good on the promise to bring you one. We'll also have a mock after the eighth game of the season – mid way through the schedule.

Will BBQ match or surpass the success that it had with the 2018 mocks? We'll find out next spring, but now it is time to take an early look at the draft possibilities for the Redskins in 2019. It will be difficult and very challenging, but it is a task that we embrace.

Without any further delays, let's take an early look at 2019 with this mock.

Round One: Amani Oruwariye, CB, Penn St

Round Two: Austin Bryant, OLB, Clemson

Round Three: Beau Benzschawel, OG, Wisconsin

Round Three (Comp Pick): Caleb Wilson, TE, UCLA

Round Four: David Sills, WR, West Virginia

Round Five: Corbin Kaufusi, DE, Brigham Young

Round Five (Comp Pick): Lester Cotton, OG, Alabama

Round Six (Comp Pick): Qadree Ollison, RB, Pittsburgh

Round Six (Comp Pick): Joe Dineen, ILB, Kansas

Round Seven: Kingsley Keke, DE, Texas A&M

There is your bye week mock and we hope to have another one after the eighth game of the season. Tomorrow, we will post the grades, evals, and questions from the Green Bay game. Have a great week.

Hail To The Redskins!

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: News, Grades, Evals, Questions, Regular Season, 2018

Agree on most of this. Have to believe with the fact Doctson has fallen flat on his face that the Redskins are going to look to use free agency to find a veteran receiver with size who can be a reliable target for #11 .

We also need to find out about Jeremy Sprinkle. Assuming Vernon Davis at 34 is not going to play forever and Reed is still a fragile commodity, we need a capable younger TE to work his way into the lineup as a two-way performers catching and blocking.

Haven't seen enough of Sprinkle to see that he is indeed that guy.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: News, Grades, Evals, Questions, Regular Season, 2018

There's a number of good young quarterbacks out there that are improving rapidly.

With Smith at 34 and Colt McCoy a backup I don't know that the Redskins have 3 years to wait to take a quarterback in the draft.

Figuring that Smith's contract is structured for 3 years, the Redskins need to draft a replacement in 2 years to have him ready to play when that day comes.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: News, Grades, Evals, Questions, Regular Season, 2018

Why not at least take a late rounder on a QB, because we're not just gonna need eventual replacement for Smith, but McCoy too, as he's only signed thru 2019. And maybe even hit the lotto on the late rounder, if he turns out to be starting material in a few years, but at worst, a 2nd string. You want your eventual starter to be eased into the position, and not be like the Cardinals and other teams, and have to rush him into starting the very first year.

Week Three

Greetings to everyone here in BGO land and greetings to all of our friends on social media. We hope you become a member of the family here.

The jubilation of week one turned into the scorn and disappointment of week two. The following week saw a return of excitement and jubilation. All of a sudden, good fortune has shined on the Washington Redskins as they stand all alone in first place after week four.

Our thoughts continue to be focused on those who were in the path of Hurricane Florence. We hope areas affected can get the help and support that is needed.

Weeks three and four are in the books and now we take a look at how the entire team fared against the Green Bay Packers a little over a week ago. Can the good fortunes continue on Monday in New Orleans? We will try to make some sense of it all as BBQ hands out grades, evaluations and questions. Feel free to offer your own grades, evaluations, questions, and opinions.

Let's take a look at week three.

Quarterbacks:
Question: How important was it for Alex Smith to come out of the gates on fire?
Answer: Very important. The good tone was established early and often with the receivers. By jumping out to a sizable lead, Smith was able to play without a lot of unneeded pressure. The second half wasn't as good, but the team was on cruise control at that juncture.
Grade: B+

Running Backs:
Question: Can Adrian Peterson keep up this pace for the rest of the season?
Answer: He had a great game against the Packers, but to expect it week after week is a bit much to ask. He had a good week after having a poor outing the prior game. Chris Thompson was neutralized by the Packers.
Grade: B

Wide Receivers:
Question: Why didn't this unit continue their performance from the first half?
Answer: The first half was good, but the Packers made some adjustments and the Redskins went to a rushing attack that helped to maintain a comfortable margin.
Grade: B-

Tight Ends:
Question: The blocking was certainly better than the previous week, wasn't it?
Answer: Absolutely. The tight ends had a much better game and Jordan Reed continues to prove that he can be a factor when his body is fully healed.
Grade: B+

Offensive Line:
Question: We'll miss Trent Williams when he finally retires some sad day, won't we?
Answer: Definitely. His pass protection in the first half was solid and he helped to open up good running lanes in the second half. The line rebounded to have a solid outing.
Grade: A

Defensive Line:
Question: What grade would you give their effort against the Packers?
Answer: When a defensive line can reasonably contain an Aaron Rogers offense to 17 points and fewer than 300 yards passing, it is a very good day. Matt Ioannidis is on pace to have sixteen sacks this season and the Alabama connection continues to impress.
Grade: A

Linebackers:
Question: How did this group fare against the Packers?
Answer: Zach Brown and Mason Foster continue to bring the heat each game and had another good afternoon against Rodgers and company. Ryan Kerrigan didn't have any sacks again, but he did draw two holding penalties and that is as good as two sacks. Preston Smith also had several hurries aimed at Rodgers.
Grade: B+

Cornerbacks:
Question: Is holding Aaron Rodgers to less than three hundred yards a win for the corners?
Answer: You betcha! While Josh Norman continues to struggle a bit, he had a fairly good game. Fabian Moreau was bailed out of an allowed touchdown by an errant pass, but he and Quinton Dunbar were pretty good overall.
Grade: B-

Safeties:
Question: Is D.J. Swearinger really the heart and soul of this team?
Answer: He is certainly the heart and soul of the defense. He feeds off of his own adrenalin and did so again in this game. Montae Nicholson needs to feed off of that emotion from Swearinger. He struggled a bit with the Packers offense.
Grade: B-

Special Teams:
Question: Was this unit better than the previous Sunday?
Answer: Definitely. Dustin Hopkins did fine and gave the Packers no chance at any returns. Tress Way continues to boom punts through the stratosphere. The return game was unspectacular, but had no forced or unforced errors.
Grade: A

Coaching:
Question: What can we say about the coaches for this third game of 2018?
Answer: Offense. The game plan was executed to near perfection in the first half. The second half was meant to be more conservative and while that was a good idea, it nearly allowed the Packers to mount a brief comeback. Overall, very good

Defense. The defense did a respectable job against Aaron Rodgers and pretty much held him in check. Good effort on keeping the Packers from being explosive on offense.

Special teams. A solid effort all around. No glaring mistakes.
Grade: B+

How would you grade each position and the coaching staff? How do you feel about this team after gaining sole possession of first place in the NFC East? Will the defense continue with their impressive stats? Are you still concerned with the play of the wide receivers – specifically Josh Doctson? Is Ryan Kerrigan showing signs of overcoming his early season slump? What are you expecting on Monday night against the Saints? What kind of impact would a victory or against the Saints have for the Redskins? On to game four. We'll see you next week with grades, evaluations, and questions.

Hail to the Redskins!

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: News, Grades, Evals, Questions, Regular Season, 2018

With Doctson's latest flea bite, err I mean injury 🙈 it really does seem as if the progress of the football team in 2018 May in part come down to stabilizing the WR position.

The defense is better, the OL when healthy is solid and Smith is a solid veteran.

We even got lucky that 33 year old Adrian Peterson has come in and rushed for 96 and 120 yards in our first two wins.

But other than the tight ends we are getting close to zero impact from the WR position.

I think we need to upgrade in season.

I am not advocating trading next year's #1 pick or anything like that but I would consider dealing a mid round selection to a team for a veteran who could be a more reliable target even if we are talking about a possession receiver rather than a down the field guy.

As long as he is on the field I think Richardson will cause defenses to respect his speed.

But Crowder and Doctson are below replacement level at this point.

If Floyd is capable of coming in and contributing after his DUI and other issues great but I would not bet the season on that.

Right now the Eagles are 2-2 and may be a 9-10 win team this year instead of a 13 win juggernaut.

Dallas has trouble scoring points while being respectable on defense and solid on the ground.

The Giants have an over the hill quarterback playing behind a porous offensive line. These guys won't be playoff contenders.

There's a chance here for the Redskins here to do something in 2018.

If we are investing $90M in a 34 year old Smith the least we can do is give him some legit consistent targets outside of the TEs and Thompson.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: News, Grades, Evals, Questions, Regular Season, 2018

I disagree on Crowder. He's still young and he's been reasonably productive (one of the few consistent WRs we've had in the past 3 years besides Ryan Grant!). He's not a #1 or #2 (although he might rise to a solid #2 level if we ever actually had a real #1 :)).

The only honest assessment of Doctson is that he hasn't done shit to date. Is it possible he's about to break out and establish himself as a great NFL WR? Anything is possible. But the smart take is that if he had that ability we'd already have seen it. We haven't. Other than some semi-impressive leaping catches in the endzone last year, he's literally done nothing.

You know who looks like a potential NFL star WR?

Cam. Effing. Sims.

Cam, in a handful of preseason games, has looked like a real NFL WR. He's shown more promise in a month than Doctson has shown in all his time as a Redskin.

I agree with you BD - we need to move on and fix the WR position now. I think Richardson may prove to be a fine #2 , but again, you have to have a dangerous, consistent #1 to know what you have in him. I don't know if there is a team out there with a true #1 who would make a trade. But at this point, I would give up a first or 2nd round pick, or players to get a great WR, and move on from Docston instead of dicking around with him as we typically do with marginal players until he has zero value.
