Burner's Burning Questions: Grades, Evals, Questions, Regular Season, 2018

Week Nine

Greetings to everyone here in BGO land and greetings to all of our friends on social media. We hope you become a member of the family here.

Our thoughts continue to be focused on those who were in the paths of Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael. We hope areas affected can get the help and support that is needed, but understand it will take time.

The Redskins watched their three game winning streak come to an end against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday and there is plenty of blame to go around. The defense laid a massive rotten egg after several stellar games. The offense struggled. Injuries took a toll. The team continues to maintain first place in the NFC East. How long will it last?

Week nine is in the books and now we take a look at how the entire team fared against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Are you expecting bad grades this week? We will try to make some sense of it all as BBQ hands out grades, evaluations, and questions. Feel free to offer your own grades, evaluations, questions, and opinions.

Upcoming Dates:
- Days until the Cowboys game: 14
- Days until the Eagles game: 25
- Days until NFL free agency: 125
- Days until NFL draft: 168

Let's take a look at week nine.

Quarterbacks:
Question: How did Alex Smith fare?
Answer: Smith had his first 300 yard game in the burgundy and gold and had an impressive twenty-two yard gain on a near sack, but his improved play had no impact.
Grade: C

Running Backs:
Question: Do you have a grade for them?
Answer: Sure, but it is not good. They were non-existent and had no positive effect on the game.
Grade: F

Wide Receivers:
Question: Well, how about the receivers?
Answer: Josh Doctson had an early case of the dropsies, but steadily improved throughout the game. Maurice Harris had his breakout game as a Redskin and looked solid.
Grade: C+

Tight Ends:
Question: What grade do give them?
Answer: They had little impact on the game, but there were no obvious mistakes either. The blocking was subpar.
Grade: C-

Offensive Line:
Question: How would you rate them?
Answer: A failing grade would be easy to give here, but the injuries mounted throughout the game. BBQ thought of giving an “incomplete”, but the next man up always applies. This unit struggled the entire game. Too many penalties.
Grade: F

Defensive Line:
Question: What grade would you give their effort against the Falcons?
Answer: With the exception of Matt Ioannidis, this group was ineffective.
Grade: D-

Linebackers:
Question: How did this group fare against the Falcons?
Answer: They looked lost. In fact, they were lost. No impact on the game whatsoever.
Grade: F

Cornerbacks:
Question: What was Josh Norman thinking?
Answer: He wasn't thinking. None of the corners were thinking or performing. Quinton Dunbar did have an interception, but he was relegated to the bench after another injury.
Grade: D-

Safeties:
Question: How did the new safety, Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix look?
Answer: It was too early to put him back there. Clinton-Dix looked lost and rarely knew what the defense was doing. D.J. Swearinger was out of position all too often.
Grade: D

Special Teams:
Question: How about this unit?
Answer: Tress Way continues to prove why he is one of the best punters in the league. Dustin Hopkins was accurate on two extra point attempts.
Grade: A

Coaching:
Question: What can we say about the coaches for this game?
Answer:
Offense. Alex Smith was improved over previous games. Maurice Harris had a coming out party. The rushing offense struggled and the offensive line was horrific. Poor game plan.

Defense. They deserved a ride back to Redskins Park in tricycles. The defensive line was absent with the exception of Matt Ioannidis. The linebackers were non-existent. Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix was inserted into the lineup a week early.

Special teams. A very good game from this unit.
Grade: F

The Redskins hold a lead of one game in the NFC East. The next division game will not occur until Thanksgiving. How would you rate the impact of Matt Ioannidis? Were you encouraged with the improvement from Alex Smith? Did Maurice Harris impress you? Do you think Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix will be ready to go on Sunday? Can the Redskins continue to stay in first place and build on their lead in the NFC East? How would you rate this game against the Falcons?

We'll see you again next week. On to week ten and the Buccaneers game.

Hail To The Redskins!

Redskin fans, meet the newest edge rusher on the team.
Todd Gurley, meet the newest Redskin, because it won't be the last time you meet him like this, this season.

In a corresponding move, the Skins say they are done with Dunn.

The question that really needs to be asked is: When will the Redskins be out of the play-off race?

They will go close to winning a few games, but the final whistle will see them with no cigar! Injuries have cruelled the team and the 'make-up's' just won't cut it. They were free agents for a reason!

The team is not done with Dunn. He will go to the practice squad.

Final In-Season 2019 Mock Draft

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land and guests from social media – we hope you become a member here.

The 2018 season enters its tenth week and the Redskins are leading the NFC East with a 5-3 record. The first half of the season brings optimism to some fans, but others are a bit guarded. The first mock came during the bye (as we do each year), but it was very early in the season. As per our promise, we bring you this second in-season mock draft. And…surprise! It has a trade!

Will BBQ match or surpass the success that it had with the 2018 mocks? We'll find out next spring, but now it is time to take an early look at the draft possibilities for the Redskins in 2019. It will be difficult and very challenging, but it is a task that we embrace.

Without any further delays, let's take an early look at 2019 with this mock.

Round One: Trade
The Redskins trade down to round two and pick up a 2020 first rounder and a 2019 sixth rounder.

Round Two: Yodny Cajuste, OT, West Virginia

Round Two: Jamel Dean, CB, Auburn

Round Three: Austin Bryant, OLB, Clemson

Round Three (Comp Pick): Beau Benzschawel, OG, Wisconsin

Round Five: Corbin Kaufusi, DE, Brigham Young

Round Five (Comp Pick): Wes Hills, RB, Slippery Rock

Round Six: Ului Lapuaho, OT, BYU

Round Six (Comp Pick): Joe Dineen, ILB, Kansas

Round Seven: Malcolm Pridgeon, OG, Ohio St.

Round Seven (Comp Pick): Gary Jennings, WR, West Virginia

There is your final in-season mock. So why would the Redskins trade their first round pick? Mark Tyler of Hogs Haven has a great theory. With two first round picks in 2020, the Skins could move up in round one and draft their quarterback of the future.

Have a great weekend.

Hail To The Redskins!

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: News, Grades, Evals, Questions, Regular Season, 2018

The question that really needs to be asked is: When will the Redskins be out of the play-off race?

The Redskins are the furthest from being eliminated from the playoffs, of all the teams in the division, since they are division leaders. 1 game ahead of Philly, and 2 games ahead of Dallas, and a relatively easy schedule the rest of the way, while Dallas and Philly both have brutal schedules. Three of our games are against those 2 teams competing with us, so those games could shift it huge in our favor. And those other 2 teams are having major issues of their own.

So the question to me becomes how good or bad will the patchwork line be, and how much more of an "impact" can Smith become. Because based on the first paragraph, we'd really have to see disastrous results the rest of the way, to not make the playoffs. Yes we've seen a disaster already on the OLine, but that doesn't necessarily translate to poor play from here on. There's still a chance they can perform well enough, while the defense leads the way.

Do not want.

Redskins aren't out of anything.

Fans who choose to quit on them, have that right.
