Game reactions. Atlanta.

Kirk is no Rodgers, no one is expecting as much. Nevertheless, you left out Garcon's complete failure to catch the ball. 4 drops and an Int he caused? Kirk is playing above his expectations, he and the team are over achieving. The coaches are getting way more out of these players than last year. Certainly your prerogative to blame is all on Kirk, but every incompletion and int is not on the QB. and you know it.

If you want to know how well Kirk played, he outplayed Matt Ryan head to head. Take that for what its worth.

Kirk was missing Pierre. His passes to Pierre were bad. The int is 100% on Kirk. Thrown behind and Pierre tired to make a play on it. I'm not out on Kirk at all, but lets' not sugar coat his performance. He missed a lot of passes he usually hits. That pick 6 is still up in the air for me. Grant turned inside, and Kirk threw it outside. Grant fell trying to reverse direction when he saw the ball headed out. Either he cut the wrong way initially, or Kirk threw it the wrong way. QB's are always going to miss some throws and make picks. He's bounced back during the game after a gaff, and had some great composure and poise late in the game. He just needs to put his whole game together and gain some consistency. If he can do that, he has a chance at being a good QB.

Look, just to be clear I like Cousins, and gave him all the credit for winning the game against philly. Having said that, there's really no denying that Cousins was more than a little off for most of this game, just like he was in the Giants game. All of those Garcon "drops" were poor throws that Garcon was actually stretching out to try to get.

Cousins is still very young and a work in progress, but he seems to be very hot and cold with his accuracy. I'm guess it's probably mostly mental, and that he can grow out of this problem.

"until late in the game" when he had a clutch 15 yard reception. The guy had 94 yards on us even with Hank and Julio hurting. I get people think we are short in the secondary and that's cool...but a no name shouldn't be able to do that to a team that is looking to be considered legitimate.

I have zero complaints with the defense or defensive coaching in this game. They shut Atlanta down for most of the game until the ultimately gassed out, and even then they made enough plays for us to win the game.

Sure, except the hottest running back in the league ran over, around, and through us like we didn't get a a scouting report on him and know he had 3 tds per game the last 2 games.

They handled him fairly well until they gassed out. The point is the defense was playing quite well for most of the game, but the offense put them back out there too quickly in the 3rd quarter.

I get your point, bro. I just don't agree.

Yeah. I will add that a few years ago you put together a post that I still think about when I get too high on my Skins; specifically it had to do with the 2nd quarter of the season, and how, with a few notable exceptions, we pretty much stink in Oct and Nov. Even 2012, Oct and Nov were mostly garbage. That post has always stuck with me, and to me, I won't feel we've turned the proverbial corner until we can consistently be good after the first few games of the season.

Hey, someone actually read that! :)

Yes, the middle eight games still seem to be our Nemesis. Let's hope this year is different.

Having said that, this team has more fight than I remember having in a while. We are making dumb mistakes right now, which is fine so far as we learn from them. If we're still making those mistakes in a year or two, then we're going to need replacement players at those positions. I am generally encouraged about the team, primarily because while Kirk has been making some really nice throws, he isn't being asked to define the team. You know where we are being defined, imo? The lines.

That ****ing rocks.

We need more depth (obviously - losing Lavaou shouldn't have shut our run game down like it evidently did) along both lines, but we're making serious progress. If McL continues to pay excessive attention to both lines, I couldn't be happier. We're forging an identity that will allow us to be competitive for a while.

Yes, I do like the 'build from the lines outward' approach. It should, some day, pay off. Whether that day is today remains to be seen, but things do look good from a roster-building standpoint.

I don't know if anyone brought up the Perry Riley missed block on Breeland's interception. Watch the end of the play to see what I mean.
All he had to do was engage the player that he was in front of, and I think Breeland scores, and he opted to do this pseudo escort/get in the way thing, which only got Breeland tackled. I feel bad for Riley as he knew it right away that he blew it. Even when he is walking off the field, and DHall is giving high fives, Riley is disgusted in himself.

Hadn't seen that, but it certainly reinforces the notion that most NFL games are won and lost by a very, very small margin. One missed block here, one borderline penalty call there, one random bounce of a fumble or deflection of a pass with that damn funny-shaped ball ...
