One of the players of the game last week was Tres Way. He did his job and kept Tavon from getting any returns. This is no way to expect to flip fields however moving forward, and we need at least one guy to become a coverage team stud. Akeem Davis became that guy last year.
Jamison Crowder was solid as well, even though he pretty much could not return anything more than 5 yards. We can't seem to block the gunners.

Our shortage of good ST players is well chronicled, but an NFL team should be able to improve in these areas after stinking it up for so long.

You're absolutely right; we need a gunner. Someone who is always right there when the ball is caught to tackle them or has the right angle to do so.

Agreed.

I thought Special Teams this week was solid, but unspectacular.

Tress Way did what he was supposed to do and kept the ball away from Tavon, which made me breathe a sigh of relief. Not like that silly low hangtime/long punt last week that had the ball in the hands of the returner before our players were anywhere close.

Our return guys didn't sparkle. The Rams kick offs always went into the End Zone allowing little chance for returns, and the punts were pretty good hangtimes meaning Crowder had to signal 'fair catch' a bunch of times.

Still at least that area didn't turn it over or give points away.

Really impressed with Hopkins. Solid Kick Offs, consistently through the EndZone (except the one!) and the Rams consistently started no further than their own 20.
No muss no fuss on the PAT's.

And the field goal was handy. On the TV it looked plenty long enough and straight down the middle. Time will tell if he's consistent but it was a really good first showing. :)

If our Special Teams can just keep being competent like this, it'll be a huge improvement. Don't need them to go win a game for us, would just prefer them not to give the game away like last week.

Our punt returners have no chance. It's like they just get drilled the second they catch the ball.

Scheme issue maybe? Why do you think we have problems there?

You're right our returners have no chance generally, there is almost always someone right in their faces.

We lost our 3 best ST players for the entire season. That leaves only a few options.

1. Replace the kicker for longer kickoffs. We did exactly that, and I was impressed at how fast Scot moved.

2. Sign a 33 or 34 year old One Man Gang for around $2 million a year. We passed. Scot probably thought he was too old. I think the Raiders got him.

3. Cut someone else, and bring in another ST player from outside the organization. Haven't done that yet.

Give it more than 2 weeks to find their feet.

We've had 1 negative play. One.

I don't count missed field goals that have a negligible effect on a game.

Patience people.

Wonder how Hopkins is going to handle 'the big time, prime time' needing a long game winning kick on the line.
