Maybe it's the fact that this is the third preseason game-the one where everyone gets a glimpse of what the current version of what the starting lineup will look like playing another teams version of what their starting lineup will look like.

It could be the geographical proximity of the Ravens and Redskins to each other.

Whatever it was, the problems of finding hardly anybody saying anything about the upcoming game with the Redskins for a Redskins Recon disappeared for this game. An entire thread on a Ravens forum was about this game and notable commentary specifically about the Skins, as well as the significance of preseason games and whatnot.

It felt like a real game Recon.

Glad to have it back too. :)

757RavensFan

if we can't blow up the Redskins O-Line, we're in trouble

AsianRice

The Redskins are preseason super bowl champ so it's a hard task for us....

Edgar

I would rather our first team defense face cousins. Griffin tends to make a defense look good.
Also, Washington can run the ball and will provide a good test in that regard.

GrimCoconut

I expect us to steamroll the Redskins. We usually play nasty after getting handed a tough loss. We usually take our frustration out on the

next team. Maybe this is all part of Kelly's master scheme. Piss off a team of Ravens and make them extract their revenge physically on a

divisional rival in the next game lol.

757RavensFan

I'm interested to see how we "try" to stop their run game. Their RBs looked very strong their last game.

harfordravenfan

Agreed, also thought some of our players were "sack happy " giving up their gap trying for the qb

Edgar

We must stop the run. Our second team guys, based on their two showings thus far cannot stop the run. I expect the Redskins to run the ball

heavily all game, get the ball out of Griffins hand quickly, focus on easier throws for him and probably try to run a version of the bengals

offense against us.
This has been a successful tactic of late and we need this week's first team defense to put a stop to it .

Bruce_Almty

As long as the team learns and improves...I don't care who wins pre-season games.

Cillmatic[/I]

So week 3 is when starters are suppose to play for most of the game; yet we're missing about 6 O-linemen and 3 starters. I wouldn't let Joe

play behind an O-line of bums, we all know how that went. Expect the redskin game to be boring, only defensive starters should play but they're

going against the WORST O-line in the NFL so it won't be much of a challenge, plus the Redskins are awful in every possible way.

ravensdan

I don't think the Redskins line is as bad as what you are saying. They have a couple of young guys they're bringing along but I wouldn't call

scherff and Moses bad players at all.

Static

RG3 will be playing but we'll see if he survives the first quarter.

Pro Bowler

If their o-line performs like last week... rg3 wont last long.

K-Dog

He has never played a full season.

I suspect he never will.

RavensFanMania

You are correct, however he probably would have in 2013 if Shanahan hadn't benched him the final 3 games.

LosT_in_TranSlatioN

Can we have Ngata back just for this game? Please?
Okay.. That wouldn't be fair to Mr. RGKNEE(the third)..... On another note. Please don't use Flacco too much if the starters on the oline are

still hurt.

The Mom Gene

The Skins gotta be thinking.... Oh Crap, the Iggles went and ticked off the Ravens... We're gonna die!

Cillmatic

RG3's coming off of a concussion and is working behind the worst O-line in the league. If Jay Gruden has an ounce of coaching prowess he'll

let Robert sit this game out. They saw what we did to Bradford, and the Eagles actually had a good O-line.

Neither starting QB's could play this week.

codizzle

Flacco is definitely playing and rg3 would only not play because of injuries holding him back

stampedehero

Third game is typically the decision maker. The starters should play with conviction and second stringers for their place. The Washington

game will set up local rivalry quite like the Eagles game did. I hope we actually learned lessons and come into the game with a resilient

attitude. No RG3, so we should consider our circumstances and establish a Ravens team all the fans recognize. September is just a week away.

Tenacious Faulker

What I want to see is what they learned on how to stop the read option from their week 2 FAIL. Washington also runs a similar offense

although not as effectively. Gruden will have taken notice to what happened in Philly (mostly the tempo) and try to reproduce that, I'm sure.

Since Washington is looking like a top-5 draft pick candidate so far, I want to see the Ravens absolutely obliterate them from the 1's thru the

4's even if Gruden doesn't experiment with any of Kelly's schemes.

Preseason is not just about trying out new players and plays. Its also about building momentum going into the season. "Winning" is a

contagious thing. There's a reason that Harbaugh has only 2-3 losses in preseason. Anything less than a dominant performance in Week 3 might

not earn back enough player confidence for the Broncos Week 1.

sflegend89

This is such a horrible match up for our "dress rehearsal" haha.. honestly the Redskins are one of the most dysfunctional teams in football

right now. I really don't want us to get a false sense of confidence or get too comfortable against a lower level of competition. Their defense

is at least average, their offense is a joke, it will do next to nothing to prepare our defense for Peyton and the Broncos week 1. At least we

got torched by Philly and got exposed a little bit even if we were in base package.

The preseason is all about improving, you gain far more from getting exposed by a good team than whooping up on a bad team. The Broncos may not

be on the radar as much this year as they have been previously but they still have a damn good football team. Well rounded, can run the ball,

obviously pass the ball, one of the best defenses in the league. That's a tough game for this young group right out of the gate. I wish we

played a better team this week to help us get ready.

Ravensfan23

It doesn't really matter the caliber of team your playing against in this "dress rehearsal" becaus the purpose isn't to measure yourself

against that opponent but to start preparing for your 1st real opponent. It's labeled a dress rehearsal because it's a close to a real game as

you'll get before the real deal, not because you wanna impose your will on the other team. It's about your guys getting good work, getting back

in the habit of how the regular season will be on the practice side of things, not necessarily the game. The opponent does matter nearly as much

because players truly understand it's just rehearsal. That's why the regular season is played at a different speed then the preseason because

you're no longer just going through the motions

Ravens23 preobably gets it more right, IMO, than most.

Mensa is safe from most of those guys, I'm thinkin.'

That said, it's not hard to see why opposing fans see our team like most do. We've done little to make them think otherwise.

There does see to be a general consensus that the Redskins ground game is formidable.

Last week the Ravens had absolutely no answer for backs coming out of the backfield as receivers. If the Skins can exploit this then maybe it will help Griffin get that knuckleball speed up closer to a fastball. Like to see what Matt Jones can do when he gets the ball starting in the second level.

kinda curious: our o-line is condered one of the worst in the NFL...buy..hey...great running game!

Yeah, had that thought too.

The OL seemingly is being viewed solely through the prism of those first four series against Detroit last week. Because beyond that, through two "games" the Skins are

- averaging 166 YPG rushing (2nd in the league).

- other than the three sacks against Bob in those first four series last week, there has only been 1 other sack against us through two "games." And even with the four total sacks against, the Skins are tied for fourth in the NFL in sacks allowed.

The only really scary thing I've seen so far from our OL is what happened with Willie Smith subbing for Trent last week. We really need to figured out what Plan B is going to be if Mr. Williams is out for any length of time.

I thought I heard the Willie Smith sack was due to the wrong protection being called. Didn't say if it was Robert, or Kory, that made the wrong call. But that that was why it looked so bad for Willie.

I think I may have heard something about that in passing on the radio yesterday afternoon, but I only caught the end of it so wasn't sure of the context. It was clear on tape that the guy came unblocked, as opposed to simply beat Willie one-on-one. I may have to go back and watch those ugly pass pro plays again and focus just on Willie ... I don't want to be guilty of the same thing I give others a hard time for and point fingers at a player without doing my homework.

A quote from Mr Smith:

On a first-quarter incompletion, Willie Smith, filling in at left tackle, appeared to whiff in blocking his defender, allowing him to drill Griffin as he tried throwing to his right...In that situation, Williams explained later, it’s up to the quarterback to recognize the on-rushing defender and get rid of the ball immediately — even faster than Griffin managed in attempting to complete the pass."

It is a little ways down the page.

I thought I heard the Willie Smith sack was due to the wrong protection being called. Didn't say if it was Robert, or Kory, that made the wrong call. But that that was why it looked so bad for Willie.

The claim, made by Cooley, was that Robert called an adjustment at the line that flowed the blocking scheme from left to right rather than what it should have been based on what the defense was showing (i.e., right to left). Cooley further claimed that the RB may have been able to stop the outside rush but that it was a low probability read. Cooley based the claim not on know ing the call but how the line moved relative to what he saw as the defense's signaling before the snap. this, in Cooley fashion, was then leveraged into a political agenda: iot to cement leadership position, trust, etc., what Cooley really thinks is most important is that Robert come out in the media and admit that he made the call so Mr Smith is absolved of an unfair criticism; thereby, gaining the love, affection and loyalty of the locker-room for being a stand-up leader. cuz Cooley, after-all, has been there and he's a professional psychologist. this all flows out Cooley's deep leadership knowledge, lengthy experience in leadership positions and ability to deal with problems on a human level. you know, the same guy who has divorced twice after short marriages.

Yeah, the more cooley talks the less I want him on the team.

The more Cooley talks, he just sounds angry, bitter and rejected. He keeps yapping about something like 12 teams interested in him, but not so much as a bit of smoke from anywhere. He has become LaVar, but now that he's off the field. I think he overestimated his on-field contributions as a whole based on fan love (also, kind of like LaVar) and there's no way he has gotten faster over the last two years. When his lone defense for being able to play in 2015 is that rookie TE's can't block, either, that's not much of praise heaped at his game.

The lowest, though, was to basically insinuate that McLovin was the only reason he didn't get a workout. The GM... the very man trying to rebuild this team all so Cooley can have one more shot way past his ability to play. Don't you have some vases or mugs to put in the kiln, Chris?

Nick

Just watched the nine pass plays with Bob again, focusing on the Smith.

Of the nine plays, there were two where he lost the physical battle.

Second series, 2nd and 10, he definitely gets bull rushed back into the pocket; Rob gets the pass off short to Garcon.

Fourth series, 2nd and 12, he gets bull rushed 2-3 steps back again, and Bob gets sacked. This is one that (IMO) Bob didn't help the situation out, failing to release the ball to the TE open short right, or step up or slide in the pocket when there appeared to be room to do so.

In the third series, on 3rd and 2, is the play where Willie looked inside and helped on the tackle, leaving the LDE an unimeded path. He tried to peel off and push the LDE wide, but it was too late. Sack. Jay and Rob "confer" on the sidelines immediately after--which may well be about why the protection was effed.

On the six other plays, he did his job and effectively blocked his man.

Comes down to whether or not the bull rushes he lost indicate a fatal flaw in his game, or ... whether or not his QB could have helped him out with effective movement, in which case we wouldn't be talking Willie this morning ... or some combination of the two.

Well, he's a backup for a reason and we both know he was outmatched.

What's Cooley supposed to do, kiss our dysfunctional FO's tuckus?

I think there is a bit of a difference between kissing ass and what he does.

What's Cooley supposed to do, kiss our dysfunctional FO's tuckus?
Good to see ya, brother.

My only real issue with Cooley, for the record, is his claiming that 3 of 4 Redskins execs favored bringing him back ... just a very self-serving, tone-deaf thing to say IMO.

What's Cooley supposed to do, kiss our dysfunctional FO's tuckus?

Big difference between suckling them and doing what he's doing, acting like a petulant child because a well past his prime TE isn't getting interest in a contract. Throwing McLovin entirely under the bus because he wisely wanted to go with younger players... ? The self-serving smarminess, claiming that he's better than anyone currently under contract on this team? Seriously?

Nick

Cooley's bitter cause we didn't sign.

He's been an ass on the radio from day one. **** him.

And it was Gruden, if I remember correctly, saying the first sack off Willie was because a protection called wrong, at one of his pressers.

Recon Addendum

Ravens fans have already reacted to the RG3 not starting tomorrow news.

Ravensfan23

Honestly that's good news for the Ravens. I think Cousins will give them a more realistic test as a pocket passer. Cousin isn't a good QB bit he reads the defense beyter and gets rid of the ball quicker. RG3 missing reqds and holding the ball wouldn't test the defense at all.

Also Jay Gruden calls a much different game for RG3, so again the defense will be tested more because Gurden opens the offense up more for Cousins imo. Wasn't excited for the first 2 preseason games but the season must be close because I'm very excited about this game.

This is seriously bizzarro world in Redskins land.
