PFT: Washington signs NT Jerrell Powe

The Redskins were busy on the defensive line this offseason and they haven’t stopped looking for bodies to add to the mix up front.

The NFL’s daily transaction report for Monday revealed that team has signed defensive tackle Jerrell Powe, who spent the 2014 season with the Texans. He played in all 16 games, started three times, and recorded 10 tackles. He played 12 games in three years with the Chiefs before making the move to Houston.

Powe joins Terrance Knighton, Stephen Paea and Ricky Jean Francois as veteran additions to the defensive line this offseason as the Redskins have worked to remake their front seven under new coordinator Joe Barry.

Knighton, Paea, Jean Francois and Jason Hatcher seem like sure bets to make the final roster and Powe will be part of the mix for backup jobs with Chris Baker, Kedric Golston, Frank Kearse and Travian Robertson. It’s a deeper group of linemen than they had to choose from last season and one they surely hope will be more productive as well.

Keim's take:
The Washington Redskins spent the offseason bolstering their defensive line depth. They added a little bit more Monday.
Washington signed veteran nose tackle Jerrell Powe, according to the NFL transactions report. Powe played in 16 games with Houston last season. The 6-foot-2, 331-pound Powe has played in 28 games with four career starts (three coming last season). He spent his first three years with Kansas City, appearing in 12 games with one start. The Chiefs picked him in the sixth round of the 2011 draft.

The Chiefs cut him on Sept. 1, 2013 only to resign him three months later. He was a third-string nose tackle in 2012.

It will be difficult for Powe to make the roster. Washington will start Terrance Knighton at nose tackle, but they also have Chris Baker, who can play end and nose; Kedric Golston, who can play both spots as well, as can Frank Kearse and Travian Robertson. Robert Thomas also can play nose tackle. All totaled, they have 11 defensive linemen on the roster. They likely will be in their nickel defense at least 70 percent of the time, lessening the need for more than one backup nose tackle.

The Redskins opted not to re-sign veteran nose tackle Chris Neild, who remains a free agent. He had two ACL surgeries in his first four years in the NFL.

The Redskins had 89 players listed on their roster before the Powe signing. Linebacker James Gayle had been placed on injured reserve.

Ok, so he's camp fodder. A rotation guy at best. Truth is, I'm so damn happy to have a grownup making personnel decisions around here I can't seem to quiet this little voice in my head whispering ... hey, you never know.

Ouch. That hurts so good.

All of the current guys may be listed as potential depth players at NT, but the truth is Thomas, Robertson are practice squaders that have no real NFL experience. Meanwhile Golston at 305 and Chris Baker are defensive ends. Baker could move to NT for some snaps but Golston is strictly an end.

So the depth situation behind Knighton is hardly settled.
