What would it take for you to question faith in Scot McCloughan?

I was discussing this with my buddy, Mike (snf)... and I tweeted the question, but I'm curious what other folks think about it.

I've basically supported Scot McCloughan's every move and had a lot of faith in his decision making... What move would Scot McCloughan have to make before you question not only your faith and support in him, but also past moves that he made and whether you were wrong to support him then?

So... Hypothetical: I supported the RGIII extension... then he trades a late round pick for Tim Tebow... That might make me reconsider whether or not he has the decision making abilities I want leading Redskins personnel, but I might also question whether or not RGIII extension was a good move. :)

Sort of an exaggeration, but I'm sure everyone has fine examples of what it would take for them to question their support/faith they've placed in Scot McCloughan.

Cheers,

SPR

Smooty...as the one, only and patented fansince62...I do believe you are referring to a different Mike. not that I don't admire the high intelligence you bring to this board (I do!). but I aint Mike! and, I can safely assume, Mike would not have it any other way.

the easy out: if there is no progress over some set time period (for me: 3 years), then McL hasn't achieved what he was brought here to do. A single event criterion would have to be outlandish IMO. as long as the brain trust works toward a commn set of goals, McL strikes me as the real deal - one who has real pedigree to go along with demonstrated success.

I'm willing to bet there will be rough waters downstream - no doubt in my mind he will jettison some fan favorites before we're ready. so some changes on our parts are also in play.

Lol...damn that mike

For me, to doubt him, he'd have to go back to his old drinking ways and really tank himself.

Give Griffin a multi-year contract extension after a poor to average season.

Letting Griffin rise or fall on his performance will be a sign Snyder has given up adequate control for the football people here to succeed.

I don't know about myself, but for many fans that will happen immediately after the #5 overall draft pick

you know...I had to think about this...but on one level....not only are you right....but funny at the same time. fickle...thy name is fan!

Way I see it, he pretty much can do whatever he wants without question this year. I have far more faith in his judgment then any I've seen in many years at the park. He has a method to his madness, and I'm giving him at the very least, two seasons to show me he's as billed.... He didn't jump onto a sinking ship, it was already on the bottom.

If he hired Brit McNasty as our PR spokesman.
If I spotted an Obummer/Bite Me bumper sticker on his car.
If he shows up in the draft war room wearing a long blonde wig, Daisy Duke's, and high heels.
If he drafts 3 punters, and 4 kickers in this draft.

Any single event would have to be something pretty absurd to cause me to lose confidence right away.

I realize there are too many Mike people on this board and I've been confusing fansince62-Mike with SNF-Mike... Sorry! I usually don't talk to SNF on the board, just in the office... Kind of funny. :)

If he did that, he'd probably still be 100% better than anything we've had in the GM position since Beathard... I didn't really mind Casserly.

When acquisitions and moves start resembling the variety that have Snyder's fingerprints all over them, then I'll start questioning my faith in McCloughan.

Until then, he's a new GM who appears to have a blueprint that is reflective of professionalism, but has yet to win a game in our colours.

Cautiously optimistic is what we all should be at this point.

If we're trying to build a culture of good people having an addict who's relapsed again wouldn't help set that tone.

Bring back Vinny in any capacity

*shudders* Ugggh. He was on ESPN as a draft expert last week. I could go on a rant here but...yeah, if he brought Vinny back in any capacity that would let me know he was either an idiot or that I'd have to start working out and eating right because if I wanted to see a good team in DC I'd have to find a way to outlive Dan.

To echo what one of these Mikes said (I can't keep track) I think Scott gets three years to put his stamp on the club. I'm not expecting a 100% hit rate in the draft or free agency. I just want a noticeable steady improvement of the roster. You know...the stuff a real GM is responsible for making happen.

He's already lost 15% of my confidence with exercising the option on RG3. And that's not a knock on RG3. Any GM that would willingly put us into $16 million worth of risk on a player with such a huge history of injuries is not anywhere near the top of the league in my opinion. That was a huge brain fart, and a major tactical fail.

Still, 85% can be about 80% better than any GM we've had in the past fifteen years or so.

You have no idea what he is thinking, what he plans do do at the QB position, or if it will turn out to be a disastrous or smart move Mike. You just don't. He certainly deserves 1/10th the benefit of the doubt you have given Gruden, who according to you was the 2nd coming of Vince Lonbardi.

It makes no difference what his intentions are, This was a bad decision for any intention.

1. Intention to trade RG3. Well, he just lessened his trade value. Any acquiring team would like to make the decision on this option on their own. Many might not like to take such a huge risk. That's a fail.

2. Intention is to keep RG3 for ten years. That's also a fail. He could have franchised RG3 next season if he played lights out. Max upside savings is $4 million. Max downside risk is $16 million, and a season like the Mara years where we can't possibly compete due to $16 million less on our salary cap. Huge risk, and fail there too.

No one reading this would ever walk into a casino, and risk $16 million to only win $4 million.

It was a bad, high risk and low reward decision under any circumstance.

I'm not going to argue with you - my point is that he may have a plan and thought process in mind you haven't even considered (in fact, that's usually the case when fans are certain they know what's what). I'll trust McCloughan has his reasons since he has a track record of being right :)

First off, I doubt many reading this have $16 million to risk. Second, your analogy sucks and appears to demonstrate that you still aren't paying attention to what the fifth year option is and how it works.
