What would it take for you to question faith in Scot McCloughan?

It makes no difference what his intentions are, This was a bad decision for any intention.

1. Intention to trade RG3. Well, he just lessened his trade value. Any acquiring team would like to make the decision on this option on their own. Many might not like to take such a huge risk. That's a fail.

2. Intention is to keep RG3 for ten years. That's also a fail. He could have franchised RG3 next season if he played lights out. Max upside savings is $4 million. Max downside risk is $16 million, and a season like the Mara years where we can't possibly compete due to $16 million less on our salary cap. Huge risk, and fail there too.

No one reading this would ever walk into a casino, and risk $16 million to only win $4 million.

It was a bad, high risk and low reward decision under any circumstance.

McD...those bad seasons had a lot more to do with a whole history of bad decisions going back years than just the cap penalty suffered by trying to reduce cap burden in the first place!!!

As far as tonight goes, I'd lose faith in him if he does any of the following:

Trades up to draft a QB.

Drafts a kicker

There are others, but I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt at this point.

As long as we don't take a QB in the 1st, I don't think I'll lose faith in Scoty Mc!

I'm not going to argue with you - my point is that he may have a plan and thought process in mind you haven't even considered (in fact, that's usually the case when fans are certain they know what's what). I'll trust McCloughan has his reasons since he has a track record of being right :)

No argument here, brother. Just a misstep. I'm confident that his scouting abilities are his real strength.

First off, I doubt many reading this have $16 million to risk. Second, your analogy sucks and appears to demonstrate that you still aren't paying attention to what the fifth year option is and how it works.

I'm aware of how the option works.

1. It moves with him if traded. RG3 just went from a very inexpensive gamble for anyone interested in trading for him, into an expensive proposition due to the option. We just lessened his trade value, and probably pushed a couple of suitors completely away.

2. If he does go down again with another knee this year, we just threw away the entire 2016 season.

3. This extension is risky on a healthy player. It's borderline insanity on an injured player. This is a bad decision on RG3, Jordan Reed or anyone else who hasn't shown an ability to stay on the field. At least it would only be a $10 million gamble on Reed.

4. Bill Belichick would never make this move in 100 years. That's how you know it's a bad one.

I thought they said, that even though they informed him they were gonna pick it up, it won't actually happen until Monday.

Ease of the hyperbole pedal McD. If Gruden has a repeat of last year, we've lost 2015, and 2016.

I guess you know more than a GM who's built 2 powerhouse teams then.

To be fair, anytime a fan judges a team decision, it is by definition a judgment made without full knowledge. So none of my judgments are any more 'valid' than anyone else's. I am just trying to make the point that just because the plan doesn't make sense to us doesn't mean the plan doesn't make sense. Often we only see part of the picture. Doesn't mean we shouldn't speculate and judge, I would just be careful being so all-fired sure I know everything there is to know.

Scot has a history of making the right choices and doing the right things to build up teams. He's done it twice now. So when someone sees says they don't get it and now don't trust him I have to wonder what they think they know over a proven professional who does this very thing as a career.

That article was nice and showed both sides of the argument but I don't think it proves it was any more of a risk than not signing him.

I don't think McD5 said he didn't trust him, he said that giving Griffin the option year eroded his confidence/trust. I was surprised they're that call too, I just have to think there are strong reasons that might not be immediately evident.

I guess I don't see the difference between eroding trust and not trusting.

But, there are a lot of things I don't understand. Like who was the first person to say "we should take the skin of a pig, make it in to an oblong shape, fill it with air, and then throw it to each other"

GMs have a lot more information that fans do. I totally agree that we operate somewhat "in the dark" by this very nature.

However, that doesn't mean that GMs don't make awful mistakes. Even GMs who have won multiple SBs before.

Signing John Beck and believing he was a QB? Terrible mistake that anyone could have seen coming from a mile away.
Extending an injured Jammal Brown? Terrible mistake, also very obvious at the time.

Unfortunately with this team we could name 10 more.

I'm not saying he sucks, or that I know more than he does. We all make mistakes. GMs do too.

Just saying that this was a mistake. A big gamble that a guy like Belichick would have never done. And one that done before the draft, is even more puzzling.

Hoping for the best, and for good health. I believe that McLovin will shine in the draft.

Are you comparing Vinny to Scot?

That would be like comparing night and day.

Still, both make mistakes. Or does Scot not make mistakes because he's a GM?

If the worst outcome happens, and RG3 goes down with another knee injury, and we lose $16 million on the cap next year?

Fans would point back to this as one of the worst decisions in years. It's a huge gamble. That's all.

I would lose faith if the Redskins traded the #5 overall pick to San Diego for 34 year old Philip Rivers.

Once again you're reaching trying to hold on to this point that isn't there.

Who signed beck?
Jamaal brown?

Was it Scot? Or was it Vinny? If you can tell me a deal or two that Scot has messed up on we can go from there. But if you're going to use other people's mistakes to try and prove Scot makes them as well...that dog won't hunt with me. Plus, why are you calling Vinny a GM? I'm pretty sure nobody else would.

Vinny was like Jim Bowden, a court jester there to entertain the owner and be their 'yes' man.

Neither Vinny nor Jim was able to find a job in his sport when he was fired in Washington.

I think that says enough about their abilities.

Weren't both of those Shanahan decisions? A guy who won a few SBs?
