NEW REDSKINS 2015

If that's accurate, that means the guy wanted to get PAID and we weren't willing to commit to large $$ lengthy contract. That's probably wise. I'd like to have locked him up for 4 years at least, but I guess we'll have to see what happens from here.

$4 million for a year is chump change. Look what we paid Paea, who's probably not the tier player Pot Roast is...

good signing...but keep in mind: pot roast is strictly a situational run stopper.

d-line has definitely improved - which may create more maneuvering room for hatcher.

from a pass rush pov.....not so much.

I don't think 'situational run stopper' is accurate. He's a run-stopper yeah, but I think he'll be anchoring that D on the majority of plays. He's going to be the foundation around which the D is rebuilt. That's why I'm concerned we only managed a 1 year contract. I don't want us to overpay, but if you're going to overpay this is the kind of guy you do it on.

And btw - I'm not sure this rumor is true - has he really signed? Hearing reports he may not still be shopping himself...

I've yet to see anyone explain a 1 year contract. Keim won't even give conjecture.

at 330+ and a history of weight issues? I don't see him anchoring the defense in games such as Philly. more likely a rotation. guess we'll see!

All defenders with the exception of guys like Kerrigan are 'rotational'. But a guy that plays two out of 3 downs is not a specialist, he's a cornerstone of the defense. He's a big strong gap-plugging body, which is exactly what we need. We're parsing words, but he's a significant starter. I'm just disappointed all we could get is a 1 year rental.

McLuv gets the talent, Bruce works the money end?

I am now having doubts about Bruce even doing the contracts. I saw someone reputable recently tweet that we've had one of the best cap/contract guys in the league on staff for the past several years and it wasn't Bruce.

I was always under the assumption that it was Bruce....but maybe not. I'll try and see what I can find.

Boone, that could actually work out well with the one year contract deal. He'll be in his contract year, so you know he'll play his ass off. If he doesn't work out for whatever reason, or gets seriously injured then we aren't married to him.

Pft says you'll see a lot more contracts like this over the next few days. Player wants 6 million/team says no and earn it. If he is awesome then we will give it to him next year.

All of the changes on the DL, and the expectation that Hatcher comes back healthy is making me think we're moving away from using the first pick on a DL. I knew we needed to fill Bowen and Cofield's spots, but the two recent signees look like upgrades...maybe enough to make the DL less important on draft day.
Been thinking about that too.

Before adding all the new beef up front, I'd been a little nervous at all the predictions of us going for an OLB-type given how overmatched we generally are on the DL. That actually seems a little less troublesome now. Even a little intriguing if I'm being honest.

The thing about the three new bigs up front is they aren't dynamic, pure pass rushers--at least not on an elite level. But they're solid and beefy and apparently eat up blocks well, which can open the door for guys like Kerrigan, Robinson, Murphy ... and maybe, if McLuvin thinks a Ray, Gregory or Beasly are the real deal, a pure havoc-wreaking rush guy.

That could set up a pretty competitive front seven.

If one takes the long view of our rebuild, and doesn't expect to also fully rebuild the secondary and OL in 2015, the thought of going pure pass rusher at #5 suddenly doesn't seem like a wasted luxury.

To me it also means that if McLuvin does not think there's an edge rusher worth of the #5, the option to trade down aggressively if possible, and stockpile youth at other positions of need, is a pretty solid option as well.

Great move for Knighton.

Great move to let Orakpo go to Tennessee.

Things are starting to head in the right direction.

Well said Om. When mocks came out with us taking an OLB, I remember laughing, thinking that was one of the last areas we needed to address. But you raise some interesting points and scenarios.

The problem with the pass rushers in the draft is they all look like very good but not elite prospects.

I wouldn't have an issue drafting a rusher in that 15-25 range but at #5?

Possibly a bridge guy if they grab Shelton. See how it shakes out this year. Then they could resign or move on.

IMO you won't see Shelton taken by Washington. Not after 3 straight moves in FA for DL.

All the moves for defense have us setting up to take offense in the draft.

At least that's the way it is looking now with Culliver being added at CB today.
