Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2015 (Continual Updates)

I think the Titans take Williams.

Beasley over Williams? Don't let that ACC bias show, BB.

Draft prospect Leonard Williams of USC breaks down film | The MMQB with Peter King

We went OLB last year, with mixed results.

Williams will occupy two on almost every play. That present opportunities for any LB.

If Williams is available, we should take him.

I'm pretty sure he's said before that he'd take Williams, but that he thinks he'll be off the board before us. Hell, I think all of us would be happy if a top prospect expected to go before us falls to us.

Second round picks are value picks in that you can often find a guy with first round ability that falls due to a glut at the position, senior season injury, etc.

This is one area we need to get better and hopefully we will with our new GM.

Busted #2's in recent years: Thomas, Kelly, Davis, #2 in 2010 for McNabb, Jenkins. No #2 in 2012 trade.

Amerson and Murphy are on the team but when you bring in Culliver at CB and see most NFL draftnicks marking OLB/rusher as key need for the club it doesn't exactly make one feel confident these guys are necessarily part of the fix here.

Love the linemen you have us taking with your latest mock BB. I know you have Boyle down in the 7th but I'm wondering if we go TE earlier, say 4thish. Only reasoning I have is FA focus was on D so I see McLuv's revamping the O hardcore.

I know it's no real consolation, but even if displaced as starters, I'd say there solid depth at the least. Ya, I'd rather have starters too. I'm real curious to see what a change in coaching yields with both of them. Running more 1 gap with our new big bodies on the interior should help Murphy, and Amerson had a reasonably good rookie season. It's hard to deny his drop off the past two seasons and Morris as coach are tied tightly together.

I wasn't that impressed with Morris.

The fact Amerson came into 2014 not ready to play leads me to believe Raheem was trying to be the players' friend as opposed to a disciplined coach.

No argument here. Sam rep as in Tampa.....

His replacement, Fewell, probably will not last long in his current spot.
He has been considered by many, to be head coaching material - so as a DB coach, that means he's 2 notches below a prospective position.
If Gruden gets fired after this season, it should be interesting to see him in the running as a replacement here.....or perhaps elsewhere.
Or if Joe Barry falls flat (again), maybe he could move up to that job, as well.

BB, I've seen some mocks putting Marcus Peters in the late first round with most of the others slotting him in the 2nd or 3rd round. I know he was kicked off the team and has off-field issues but do you really think he lasts until the 7th round?

I gotta think his situation is similar to that of Tyrann Mathieu.

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2015 (Continual Updates)

Here is our latest Redskins mock as we get closer to the draft. Team needs are plentiful and there are future players just waiting for that phone call. We will go to three mocks a week on Monday - after posting another one this coming Friday.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

Without any further delays, let’s take a look at the latest mock for 2015.

Mock Draft, 2015

Round One:
Marcus Mariota slips to number five and the Redskins are suddenly in the middle of a lucrative bidding war. The Jets, Bears, Rams, Saints, Browns, and Eagles make offers. It comes down to the Bears and Browns. The Bears move up two spots to take Mariota and the Redskins receive the seventh overall pick and each of their picks in the second, third, fourth, and seventh rounds. In addition, the Redskins receive Chicago’s 2016 second rounder.

Round One: Brandon Scherff, OT, Iowa
Scherff is arguably the best tackle on the board and slips to the Redskins at seven. He is a beast in the running game and equally the same in the passing department. He takes the field with a completely nasty attitude. Playing in the powerful Big Ten, he more than held his own against quality competition.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TS9Hq4bdFY0
Other Possible Targets:
Leonard Williams, DT, Southern Cal
Danny Shelton, DT, Washington
Vic Beasley, OLB, Clemson
Kevin White, WR, West Virginia
Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford

Round Two: Arik Armstead, DE/DT, Oregon
The Redskins make their first of two second round picks and choose an underrated DE/DT from the PAC 12 perennial power. He is a strong lineman who will be used heavily at DE position, but can slide inside on certain packages. Armstead is excellent against the run and has steadily improved his skills as a pass rusher. He has quick feet, quick moves, and a fast closure rate to the ball. Played on the varsity basketball team as a freshman.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKnBUX-SBNE
Other Possible Targets:
Arie Kouandjio, OG, Alabama
Kevin Johnson, CB, Wake Forest
Jordan Phillips, DT, Oklahoma
Jalen Collins, CB, LSU
Benardrick McKinney, ILB/OLB, Mississippi St.

Round Two: Garrett Grayson, QB, Colorado St.
The new GM spots a quality QB for the taking and pulls the trigger on the Mountain West ace. Grayson is amazingly accurate with the long ball and has great arm strength. He has a high rate of consistency and places the ball exactly where his receivers can catch it. He is equally effective under center, in the pistol, and in the shotgun.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSZz0Sg8qMs
Other Possible Targets:
See Above

Round Three: Cody Prewitt, FS, Mississippi
It is not unusual for higher rated prospects to fall a round or two and that is the case with Prewitt. He has good size and superb instincts for a free safety. Prewitt’s aggressiveness comes from his time at SS earlier in his career, but slid over to the FS position with considerable ease. A reliable tackler, the SEC standout has good coverage skills.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biz_YF_zgmA
Other Possible Targets:
Donovan Smith, OT, Penn St.
Lorenzo Mauldin, OLB, Louisville
Gerod Holliman, FS, Louisville
Rashad Greene, WR, Florida St.
Ty Sambrailo, OT, Colorado St.

Round Three: Jay Ajayi, RB, Boise State
With the departure of Roy Helu to the Raiders, the Redskins use their extra third rounder as a replacement. The Redskins get the better end of this deal as Ajayi is a pass catching specialist and a superb blocker for the Mountain West program. He can be a three down back if needed and could be part of a formidable tandem with Alfred Morris. The former soccer player is quick on his feet and will fit into just about any running scheme.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUQ4Xy-sVvE
Other Possible Targets:
See Above

Round Four:
The Redskins trade down in round four and receive an extra fifth rounder.

Round 4: Laken Tomlinson, OG, Duke
Born and raised in Jamaica, Tomlinson didn’t learn the game of football until he was a freshman in high school. Going to a program that had little success at football, the ACC stud was part of a strong offense that produced winning seasons, conference championship games, and major bowl considerations. The four year starter holds his own against bull rushers, athletic linebackers, provides solid pass protection, and is great on run support.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48ovMbQnY7I
Other Possible Targets:
Henry Anderson, DE, Stanford
Corey Robinson, OT, South Carolina
Jacoby Glenn, CB, Central Florida
Vince Mayle, WR, Washington St.
David Johnson, RB, Northern Iowa

Round 4: Durell Eskridge, FS, Syracuse
The Redskins quickly add another talented free safety/strong safety - this time from the ACC in a surprising move. Eskridge played FS, but he can play SS in the NFL as well. With the newfound depth at SS via free agency and FS from the draft, the Redskins will have size, speed, strength, and needed talents at a vital position.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69MqHJ8obWo
Other Possible Targets:
See Above

Round Five: Robert Myers, G, Tennessee State
You would be hard pressed to find another person bigger than Myers in all of Middle Tennessee! The Ohio Valley Conference lineman would probably rate higher if he was in a P5 league, but make no mistake about his talents and abilities. He anchored a line that produced many victories and plenty of points. Solid in pass protection and the running game.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmfD3NipHag
Other Possible Targets:
Xavier Williams, DT, Northern Iowa
Sean Mannion, QB, Oregon St.
Kaleb Eulls, DE, Mississippi St.
Corey Crawford, DE, Clemson
Xzavier Dickson, OLB, Alabama

Round Five: Taiwan Jones, ILB, Michigan St.
The Big Ten prospect has excellent size to go along with a solid game at the middle/inside linebacker position. He has a great burst to the ball, even after quickly shedding blocks. Jones is more of a running game specialist and has some weaknesses in the passing game – somewhat hidden when called upon to blitz – an area where he is very effective.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iILFMCjYP-o
Other Possible Targets:
See Above

Round Six: Darren Waller, WR, Georgia Tech
The Redskins really don’t have a need at the WR position, but there is no denying that Waller is very talented and considered an underrated sleeper in this draft. The ACC product has blazing speed (4.36 40) to go with a very large frame (6-6) – a rare commodity for WRs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jex4aA4BLXI
Other Possible Targets:
Jarvis Harrison, G, Texas A&M
Jake Smith, C, Louisville
Julian Wilson, CB/FS, Oklahoma
Jacob Hagen, FS, Liberty
Zachary Zenner, FB, South Dakota St.

Round Seven: Nick Boyle, TE, Delaware
Boyle comes from the Colonial Athletic Conference and can snag his share of receptions, but blocking is his forte. In fact, his superior blocking skillset is better than that of Logan Paulsen’s. Boyle could easily end the stay of the UCLA product.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGfh1B-Mf5s
Other Possible Targets:
Dechane Durante, FS, Northern Illinois
A.J. Tarpley, ILB, Stanford
Cody Fajardo, QB, Nevada
Marcus Peters, CB, Washington
Chris Bonner, QB, Colorado-Pueblo

Round Seven: Joey Mbu, DT, Houston
The Redskins had a private workout with Mbu and the interest in him is apparently very real. He has the size to shed blockers and often did so when excelling in the run defense. Not a pass rushing specialist, but was expected to occupy blockers and did so effectively against quality AAC competition. Could sub for Knighton at times when needed.

Hail To The Redskins!

Great effort again, BB.

Personally, I don't see how Mariota slips past number 2. I'd put the odds at less than 5%.

In place of that though, maybe we can get someone to sell the farm to move up for one of the WRs. Something along the lines of what Buffalo did to obtain Sammy Watkins, or what Atlanta did for Julio Jones.

Outside of Mariota, the only pre-draft workout (and Mariota is a visit not workout) I can confirm for #Redskins is Houston DT Joey Mbu

Some interesting info as to the tendencies of McLovin.

The signings of Chris Culliver and Jeron Johnson help, but for a secondary that was rated as the league's worst pass defense by Football Outsiders last year, more reinforcements are needed.

And by all accounts, they'll have to come at a prerequisite size later in the draft. McCloughan selected eight defensive backs in San Fran, and none were drafted prior to the third round.

What Recent History Suggests About Washington Redskins' 2015 NFL Draft Plan | Bleacher Report

I love the way McLovin' is getting full credit for the Seattle team like he was the GM and not John Schneider. Way to just ignore one of the great young GM's in the game today. We have no clue how much of that was Schneider and how much McLovin'.

After allowing the DL to atrophy over the past 3 years it is amazing to see the moves the team has already made and some others contemplated here in the draft.

The Redskins have been on the other end of a lot of two for one, three for one type deals when it comes to picks.

You can't build that way anymore as a staple.

You have to corral cheap, young talent and develop it.

good theory to espouse. caveat: not much time to develop in order to draw full value. cheap becomes expensive if the development effort succeeds come the next contract period.

True, and that shouldn't happen, but he was the top personnel executive there second only to Schneider. Had that been his only title we'd still be excited for nabbing a top up-and-coming exec from a contender that was just built primarily from the draft/college scouting. And we'd assume he was heavily involved.

Even if we were to take away his GM title from his past, it'd be a great hire (not saying you were claiming he wasn't, just an observation as to why the titles aren't so hugely significant here).

A top personnel exec who had worked, chronologically, with the Packers, 49ers and Seahawks. All teams that did a ton of good drafting while he was there. :)

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2015 (Continual Updates)

Here is our latest Redskins mock as we get closer to the draft. Next week we will go to three mocks a week and each one will be different. On Mondays, we will post mocks that have no trades. Wednesdays will feature mocks that have minimal trades. Fridays will feature mocks that have multiple trades.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

Without any further delays, let’s take a look at the latest mock for 2015.

Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford

Round One:
The Redskins trade down in the first round and pick up a late second rounder.

Round One: Eli Harold, OLB, Virginia
Harold is an explosive player who will allow Trent Murphy to move inside to ILB and form a powerful linebacker corps. The ACC product is strong at the point of attack with an initial burst that is hard to beat and is particularly strong against tight ends. He can drop back in coverage and is able to blitz against left tackles with a very quick first two or three steps.

Other Possible Targets:
Jalen Collins, CB, LSU
Eddie Goldman, DT, Florida St.
Melvin Gordon, RB, Wisconsin

Round Two: Arik Armstead, DE/DT, Oregon

Round Three: Tre Jackson, OG, Florida St.
The massively sized ACC lineman is a force on the offensive line. He is another player who engages defensive linemen with a nasty attitude and with great leverage against defenders. Jackson holds his ground against the best defensive tackles and struggles a bit against pass rushing DEs. Thus, he is better on the inside and not projected to be an OT.
