By signing McCoughlan the Redskins admitted for the first time what many on the outside knew for a long time - the team is at or near the bottom and a complete rebuild is necessary.

This is the most optimistic I have been since Gibbs came back.

For once we are going into the offseason acknowledging we are not 'close', that we don't have 'too good talent to finish in the basement', etc as in seasons past.

That is going to help us steer clear of Suh and other headline free agents that are looking for a retirement check as well as the 33 year olds that will be retired when this team is ready to contend again.

It will also mitigate against keeping older mediocre players on the roster and coming to camp as we did last year as Allen said with '20 or so of the starting 22 spots filled.'

No team that finishes 3-13 has many sure things on its roster. Certainly not enough to field most of the same squad again the next season, unless you want to finish 3-13 or close to it again.

For too long the Redskins fooled themselves into thinking they were not their record.
