Remember Robert Horry? Dude won like 20 titles (all numbers approximate) in the NBA with the Lakers and Spurs, and always seemed to hit a key three or two during a playoff run.Horry had a knack for being in the right place at the right time, and being able to step up and deliver when it mattered the most.

Here's hoping Robert Griffin can deliver when it matters the most.

I'm talking about this weekend. Friends and family of Redskins fans are on suicide watch after the Bucs game. If the Redskins go out and lay a collective egg against San Fran... yikes. If Griffin is largely responsible due to poor QB play again? Double-yikes.

We've read all the articles and heard all the reports about Griffin not studying enough, not seeing the field, missing receivers, etc. He was bad last weekend. REALLY bad. Putrid. Rancid. You get the idea. For that one game, he looked as bad as McNabb looked in a Skins uniform. Worse than Rex. Shuler-esque. You get the idea. It wasn't pretty.

But it was one game.

ONE GAME.

Let's hold off on burying the kid just yet. Now, if the team comes out and stinks it up on the offensive side of the ball this week, and Griffin continues to look lost, then I'll be the first to admit we have problems. But personally, I don't think that's going to happen. I think Griff is going to step it up. I think he is mad as hell about his performance and the reaction to that crapfest. I think he is smoldering, smoking, ready to show everyone that everyone in the NFL has a bad game. This isn't to say that I think he plays perfectly, just much, MUCH better this weekend.

He knows the team has a difficult decision to make this off season. The first step in making that decision is to see how he responds to this kind of adversity. If he is terrible again and continues his slide, that tells us (and the team) an awful lot about who he is and what he is capable of (and what he is NOT capable of). I have been, and continue to be, one of his biggest defenders here, but if he throws out another stink bomb this weekend, I will acknowledge the severity of the problem.

But I think he has too much pride for that. I think he is ready to quell the doubters and deliver an eye-opening (in a good way) performance. I'm calling it now, we beat the 9ers and Griff plays great. Griffin delivers when it matters, just like Big Shot Rob.

If I'm a player, I can't stand this negativity this week. It would piss me off and light a fire. I think we learn a lot about a lot of people on the team this weekend.

I just watched the Tampa game again.

Frankly, Robert didn't have that bad a game. The o-line did. The penalties by the WRs and TEs were pretty bad, especially at key times. The first INT was on the receiver. Helu fumbled and killed a good drive. And, Robert missed a couple of bombs.

And, the predictable call for a run up the gut on second and long was very obvious from what I saw.

Oh, and that defense couldn't stop a feather if the wind was blowing in the right direction. And, special teams had us backed up to our own end zone all day.

I thought the coaches had a bad game.

And this is objective? Ha! You are about the only person on earth I have heard say he did not have a bad game...every pundit, and there are some respectable ones out there...every pundit suggested otherwise. Fans who have watched the game thought otherwise, but here you are suggesting it wasn't a bad game.

WOW!

After last week, if he goes out and lays a turd again, it needs to be his last game as starter. And I don't think we should trade him either. Keep him on as the number 2 until he finds his fire and skill set again. When he does that, give him another year on the bench. By then, hopefully the endorsement deals, constant yapping, etc. will come out the other end and he can move forward as a football player instead of a celebrity.

If you don't take away the limelight, he will never get it. He needs to be humbled in the worst way. Until that time comes, he's Manziel without the shady behavior.

WOW!

that's only part of it. I do believe our fellow BGO-er is bemoaning the crappy perfromances - largely ignored in the media and by others this weak - by most of the rest of the team.

I didn't think he had that bad a game either, El. *shrug*

I don't think Griffin had as bad of a game as the media portrays...he just overthrew Jackson twice missed wide open receivers and didn't show improvement. Had it been against a better team it may have been easier to swallow...but this last season and a half has been dismal for the team and the fans. I recall at one point he had 8-10 completions in a row but add in the pick 6 and the other interception well...? That's not to mention the 1st and goal that turned into a missed field goal. Oh yeah that second missed one didn't exactly make us all warm and fuzzy inside. What a waste of a bye week and a winnable game. The team and it's fans can expect much worse if we get stomped by the 9ers and Colts.

If we get stomped by both teams, they deserve to get lambasted. We need heart, miles and miles of heart.

Oh, the OL had a bad game.

So did the defense, though that is pretty much a given at this point.

Special teams were not special.

Nor were the coaches.

I thought the cheerleaders were ok, given the product on the field.

And the vendors, from what I hear, generally made correct change.

But Bob? He had a bad game, brothers and sisters, by any reasonable standard.

yes...emphatically he did play badly.

but, not attacking you, that is not an analysis of how we got to this sad point. there's a complex narrative here that no one is really attempting to answer. reality is that we on this blog aren't the folks positioned to do this. that should be the job of a neutral, unbiased, probing, analytic media. as well...we all also know "good luck with that one"!!!!!!

Are you serious? I see practically everyone on this "blog," and on every print outlet, message board, radio and TV show one would care to name, falling all over themselves to attempting to answer what is wrong with the Redskins.

Hopefully, Bob will have a good game on Sunday (unlike, you know, last week) and we can at least eliminate that topic of debate for a week, while we continue merrily on trying to convince one another we know why the Redskins ... lose ... a lot.

you are wrong. no one is serious in their approach. they're all focused, for the most part, on technical issues. they're not looking at the big picture going back 15 or more years and assessing the patterns (other than "we lose a lot") and getting at root causes. I heard one thing from a long time reporter yesterday that started in this direction. can't remember his name...but he was there during the Cooke years. he reflected on the fact that Cooke would threaten people, like Snyder, but then always circle back and let people know "this too shall pass. Let's get about our jobs now and fix things." in short....people weren't in a constant churn on a 24 hr basis worrying about their futures - and everything negative that flows out of that (except perhaps at Apple during the Jobs reign). the reporter when on to note that Snyder threatens folks also....but never circles back. the working culture operates in fear. that suffuses through an entire organization. that is just one vector. no one is really doing a complete "tie all the threads together" analysis that really gets a t rock bottom issues. this is what all organizations in trouble do at some point. usually they pay big bucks to some independent specialists to come in and perform a top to bottom assessment. out of that issues a new or modified strategic vision, mission statement, policies, roles definitions, processes, etc. doesn't look like that has happened for the last, oh, 20+ years. and for that reason...we can likely expect the same results for the next 20+ years.

Good thing we all have you set us straight, Al.

OM...I humbly thank you for recognizing the heroism and nobility in others who dutifully risk unpopularity and ridicule for peering into the future and preaching the football gospel. it's not a fun mission. it has grave consequences for the psyche and all those who team to charge the same hill.

is there some sort of financial compensation that rewards the self-sacrifice and personal risk?
