Team selects five players on Day 3

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins finalized their 2014 NFL Draft class on Saturday, selecting eight total players. The team’s 2014 draft class is as follows:

NOTES ON THE REDSKINS’ OVERALL DRAFT

· The Redskins made eight selections in the 2014 NFL Draft. The eight selections mark the third time in four years Washington has selected at least eight players (2011, 2012 and 2014).

· Washington has now selected 36 players in the past four drafts, the franchise’s largest four-year total since the institution of the seven-round draft in 1994. The team last posted a four-year total of 36 across the 1991-94 NFL Drafts, a time frame which included two 12-round drafts, one eight-round draft and one seven-round draft.

· Washington has made at least seven selections in four consecutive drafts for the first time since 1992-95.

· The Redskins selected two players in the seventh round, marking the sixth time in the last seven years that the team has drafted multiple players in the seventh round. Washington has made multiple seventh-round selections in each year from 2008 through 2014 with exception of the 2013 NFL Draft.

· Washington made two trades during the 2014 NFL Draft. On Friday, the team sent the No. 34 overall pick to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for the Nos. 47 and 78 overall picks. On Saturday, Washington sent the No. 178 overall pick to the Tennessee Titans for the Nos. 186 and 228 overall selections.

· Washington selected four players with selections acquired by trade: LB Trent Murphy (No. 47 from Dallas), G Spencer Long (No. 78 from Dallas), RB Lache Seastrunk (No. 186 from Tennessee) and K Zach Hocker (No. 228 from Tennessee).

· Washington has now selected 23 players with selections acquired by trade in the Bruce Allen era: FB/TE Dennis Morris (2010), WR Terrence Austin (2010), C Erik Cook (2010), T Selvish Capers (2010), LB Ryan Kerrigan (2011), WR Leonard Hankerson (2011), RB Roy Helu, Jr. (2011), S DeJon Gomes (2011), WR/TE Niles Paul (2011), WR Aldrick Robinson (2011), OL Maurice Hurt (2011), LB Markus White (2011), QB Robert Griffin III (2012), G Josh LeRibeus (2012), LB Keenan Robinson (2012), RB Alfred Morris (2012), T Tom Compton (2012), CB Jordan Bernstine (2012), LB Brandon Jenkins (2013), LB Trent Murphy (2014), G Spencer Long (2014), RB Lache Seastrunk (2014) and K Zach Hocker (2014).

· The 2014 NFL Draft marks the first time since 2010 that the Redskins have not selected college teammates in the same draft. Washington selected at least a pair of college teammates in each draft from 2011-13 (Nebraska’s Roy Helu, Jr., DeJon Gomes and Niles Paul in 2011; SMU’s Josh LeRibeus and Richard Crawford in 2012; Florida State’s Chris Thompson and Brandon Jenkins in 2013).

· With the selection of Stanford’s Trent Murphy, the Redskins made a product of the conference now known as the Pac-12 the team’s top selection for the first time since selecting Stanford DB Duncan McColl with their top selection in the 1977 NFL Draft.

NOTES ON THE SELECTION OF TRENT MURPHY

· Murphy is the first selection of the Jay Gruden era and is the 35th selection by the Redskins under Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen.

· Murphy is the 432nd selection made by the Redskins in the Common Draft era (since 1967) and the 34th second-round selection in that time frame. He is the 52nd second-round selection by the Redskins all-time since the institution of the draft in 1936.

· The selection marks the third time the Redskins have taken a pass rusher with their first selection in the last six drafts (DE/LB Brian Orakpo in 2009 and LB Ryan Kerrigan in 2011).

· Including the selection of CB David Amerson with their initial pick last year, the Redskins have now selected a defensive player with their top pick in consecutive seasons for the first time since drafting S Sean Taylor, CB Carlos Rogers, LB Rocky McIntosh and S LaRon Landry with their first selections in the 2004-07 NFL Drafts.

· Murphy is the 15th Stanford product selected by the Redskins all-time, joining E Keith Topping (1936), B Bill Joslyn (1944), B Willard Sheller (1944), B Bill Shipkey (1945), C Jim McCurdy (1945), B Lynn Brownson (1947), B Bob Anderson (1948), B Bob Mathias (1953), E Sam Morley (1954), QB Don Bunce (1972), DE Duncan McColl (1977), G Brad Badger (1997), QB Todd Husak (2000) and LB Jarred Newberry (2005).

· Murphy is the sixth Stanford product selected by the Redskins in the Common Draft era (since 1967), tied for 11th-most by a single college in that timeframe.

· Murphy’s selection at No. 47 marks the highest the Redskins have taken a Stanford product since selecting E Keith Topping with the No. 11 overall pick in the 1936 NFL Draft.

· With Murphy’s selection, the Redskins used a second-round pick to draft a linebacker for the first time since selecting McIntosh in the second round (No. 35 overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft.

· Murphy is the third player selected by the Redskins at No. 47 all-time, joining T Larry Lutz (1936) and DE Shane Collins (1992).

· All three of Washington’s all-time selections at No. 47 have played collegiately in the conference now known as the Pac-12.

· Murphy is the first Pac-12 Conference player selected by the Redskins since selecting UCLA WR Terrence Austin in 2010. The two are the only Pac-12 products selected by the Redskins in the Allen era.


NOTES ON THE SELECTION OF MORGAN MOSES

· Moses is the second selection of the Jay Gruden era and is the 36th selection by the Redskins under Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen.

· Moses is the 433rd selection made by the Redskins in the Common Draft era (since 1967) and the 32nd third-round selection in that time frame. He is the 61st third-round selection by the Redskins all-time since the institution of the draft in 1936.

· The selection marks the earliest the Redskins have taken an offensive lineman since selecting two-time Pro Bowler Trent Williams with the fourth overall pick of the 2010 NFL Draft.

· Moses is the first player from the University of Virginia selected by the Redskins since the team picked G Jim Huddleston in the sixth round of the 1986 NFL Draft. The Redskins’ last four selections from UVA have all been offensive linemen.

· Moses becomes the ninth player from the University of Virginia selected by the Redskins all-time, joining E Tom Dudley (1947), B Jonny Papit (1951), E Fred Polzer (1958), RB Jeff Anderson (1969), DT Rick Brand (1969), T Paul Rogers (1969), C Dan Ryczek (1971) and Huddleston.

· Moses’ selection is the highest the Redskins have ever selected a UVA product. Jonny Papit was previously the highest-selected UVA player by the Redskins at the No. 76 overall pick in the 1951 NFL Draft.

· Moses is the sixth player selected by the Redskins at No. 66 all-time, joining G Rotta Holland (1937), B George Peters (1942), B Dick Lynch (1958), KR Mike Oliphant (1988) and DT Tracy Rocker (1989).

· Moses is the seventh Redskins draft pick in the Allen era to have competed collegiately in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the most of any conference in that timeframe. The Redskins selected three ACC products in both the 2011 (Clemson’s Jarvis Jenkins, Miami’s Leonard Hankerson and Florida State’s Markus White) and 2013 drafts (NC State’s David Amerson, Florida State’s Chris Thompson and Florida State’s Brandon Jenkins).

NOTES ON THE SELECTION OF SPENCER LONG

· Long is the third selection of the Jay Gruden era and is the 37th selection by the Redskins under Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen.

· Long was the Redskins’ second pick of the third round, marking the first time the Redskins had made two third-round selections since 2002 (CB Rashad Bauman and WR Cliff Russell). It is the fourth time in the Common Draft era (since 1967) that the Redskins have made multiple selections in the third round (1993, 1994, 2002 and 2014).

· Long is the 434th selection made by the Redskins in the Common Draft era and the 33rd third-round selection in that time frame. He is the 62nd third-round selection by the Redskins all-time since the institution of the draft in 1936.

· Including the selection of Morgan Moses, Washington selected offensive linemen with consecutive picks for the first time since selecting C Erik Cook and T Selvish Capers with two seventh-round selections in the 2010 NFL Draft.

· Long is the 20th Nebraska Cornhusker selected by the Washington Redskins all-time, tied with Alabama for fourth-most of any school in team history.

· Long is the fourth Nebraska product selected by the Redskins in the Allen era, the most of any school.

NOTES ON THE SELECTION OF BASHAUD BREELAND

· Breeland is the fourth selection of the Jay Gruden era and is the 38th selection by the Redskins under Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen.

· Breeland is the 435th selection made by the Redskins in the Common Draft era (since 1967) and the 30th fourth-round selection in that time frame. He is the 45th fourth-round selection by the Redskins all-time since the institution of the draft in 1936.

· Including the selection of safety Phillip Thomas last year, the Redskins drafted defensive backs in the fourth round in consecutive drafts for the first time in the Common Draft era. It is the first time the Redskins have selected members of the same position group in the fourth round in consecutive years since selecting linebackers Shawn Barber and Nate Stimson in the 1998 and 1999 NFL Drafts, respectively.

· Breeland is the 81st defensive back selected by the Redskins in the Common Draft era, the most of any position group.

· Breeland is the eighth Redskins draft pick in the Allen era to have competed collegiately in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the most of any conference in that timeframe. The Redskins selected three ACC products in both the 2011 (Clemson’s Jarvis Jenkins, Miami’s Leonard Hankerson and Florida State’s Markus White) and 2013 drafts (NC State’s David Amerson, Florida State’s Chris Thompson and Florida State’s Brandon Jenkins) and added Virginia’s Morgan Moses in the third round.

· Breeland is the fifth player selected by the Redskins at No. 102 all-time, joining C Frank Kuchta (1958), RB Jimmy Smith (1984), RB Stephen Davis (1996) and QB Kirk Cousins (2012).

NOTES ON THE SELECTION OF RYAN GRANT

· Grant is the fifth selection of the Jay Gruden era and is the 39th selection by the Redskins under Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen.

· Grant is the 436th selection made by the Redskins in the Common Draft era (since 1967) and the 46th fifth-round selection in that time frame. He is the 71st fifth-round selection by the Redskins all-time since the institution of the draft in 1936.

· Grant’s selection marks the first time the Redskins have selected a wide receiver since picking three in the 2011 NFL Draft (Leonard Hankerson, Niles Paul and Aldrick Robinson).

· Grant joins Paul (2011) and Darnerian McCants (2001) as the only receivers drafted by the Redskins in the fifth round all-time.

· Grant is the 48th wide receiver selected by the Redskins in the Common Draft era.

· Grant is the 11th Tulane product selected by the Redskins all-time, joining B Buddy Banker (1940), T Bill Kirchem (1940), T Harley McCollum (1942), B Walt McDonald (1943), T Roman Bentz (1943), E Art Porter (1945), G Don Lockwood (1959), G Bernie Darre (1960), HB Terry Terrebonne (1962) and QB Patrick Ramsey (2002). Grant and Ramsey are the Redskins’ only two selections from Tulane in the Common Draft era.

· Grant is only the second player selected by the Redskins all-time with the No. 142 selection, joining UCLA T Gil Moreno (1956).


NOTES ON THE SELECTION OF LACHE SEASTRUNK

· Seastrunk is the sixth selection of the Jay Gruden era and is the 40th selection by the Redskins under Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen.

· Seastrunk is the 476th selection made by the Redskins in the Common Draft era (since 1967) and the 51st sixth-round selection in that time frame. He is the 77th sixth-round selection by the Redskins all-time since the institution of the draft in 1936.

· The Redskins have now selected at least one running back in four consecutive drafts, their longest streak since selecting a running back in nine consecutive drafts from 1983-91.

· Seastrunk is the first sixth-round running back taken by the Redskins since drafting Pro Bowler Alfred Morris at No. 173 overall in the 2012 NFL Draft.

· Seastrunk is the first Baylor product selected by the Redskins since drafting quarterback Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

· Bolser is the seventh selection of the Jay Gruden era and is the 41st selection by the Redskins under Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen.

· Bolser is the 477th selection made by the Redskins in the Common Draft era (since 1967) and the 57th seventh-round selection in that time frame. He is the 88th seventh-round selection by the Redskins all-time since the institution of the draft in 1936.

· The Redskins have now selected at least one running back in four consecutive drafts, their longest streak since selecting a running back in nine consecutive drafts from 1983-91.

· Seastrunk is the first sixth-round running back taken by the Redskins since drafting Pro Bowler Alfred Morris at No. 173 overall in the 2012 NFL Draft.

· Hocker is the eighth selection of the Jay Gruden era and is the 42nd selection by the Redskins under Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen.

· Hocker is the 478th selection made by the Redskins in the Common Draft era (since 1967) and the 58th seventh-round selection in that time frame. He is the 89th seventh-round selection by the Redskins all-time since the institution of the draft in 1936.

· Hocker was the first kicker selected in the 2014 NFL Draft.

· Hocker is the first kicker selected by the Redskins since taking Tennessee’s John Hall in the sixth round of the 1999 NFL Draft.

· Hocker is the seventh listed kicker selected by the Redskins in the Common Draft era, joining Mike Braff (1968), Mike Wedman (1973), Mike Flater (1974), Dan Miller (1982), Chip Lohmiller (1988) and Hall (1999).

· Hocker is the seventh player selected by the Redskins all-time with the No. 228 overall selection, joining T Hal Mullins (1947), B Dick West (1948), B Frank Pattee (1949), K Mike Flater (1974), DE Dallas Hickman (1975) and RB Jawan Jamison (2013).

· Washington has now made selections at No. 228 in consecutive seasons across the 2013 and 2014 NFL Drafts. All of Washington’s picks at No. 228 (1947-49, 1974-75, 2013-14) have either been preceded or followed by another selection at No. 228 in the draft the year before or year after.

· Hocker was the Redskins’ second of two selections in the 2014 NFL Draft acquired from Tennessee (RB Lache Seastrunk – No. 186).

· Hocker is the 11th Arkansas Razorback selected by the Redskins all-time, joining C Earl Wheeler (1947), B Ross Pritchard (1949), B Alvin Duke (1950), G Buddy Brown (1951), B A.J. Baker (1955), G John Childress (1962), G Dave Adams (1963), B Gordon Guest (1964), LB Jeff Goff (1982) and LB Ravin Caldwell (1986) .

For some reason I have a feeling this year's draft will be one of the best in recent memory for the Skins. Prepare to be dazzled.
