FEDEXFIELD TO HOST WORLD CHAMPION SPAIN, HOMETOWN D.C. UNITED AS PART OF ROAD TO BRAZIL DOUBLEHEADER IN SUMMER OF SOCCER

Spain vs. El Salvador and D.C. United vs. Columbus Crew on June 7

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – FedExField, home of the Washington Redskins, will host the highly anticipated finale of the 2014 Road to Brazil series of games, featuring defending World Cup champions Spain taking on local favorite El Salvador. Hometown Major League Soccer (MLS) team D.C. United will follow in a regular season match against Columbus Crew in a doubleheader extravaganza set for Saturday, June 7. Kickoff times will be announced at a later date.

As previously announced, FedExField will also host top European soccer clubs Manchester United and Inter Milan as part of the 2014 Guinness International Champions Cup on Tuesday, July 29. Kickoff for the game, which will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1, is set for 7 p.m.

“Once again, FedExField will serve as the No. 1 destination for American soccer fans to see the most prestigious teams in the world,” Redskins Chief Marketing Officer Mitch Gershman said. “We are honored to host these marquee matchups and proud to bring such high-profile events to the Washington D.C. region and our season ticket holders.”

Spain and El Salvador are brought to FedExField as part of the 2014 Road to Brazil as six countries make final preparations just days prior to heading to Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Tickets for all Road to Brazil matches will go on sale to the general public March 17.

Road to Brazil, organized by Soccer United Marketing, MLS’ commercial arm, will be played across five U.S. cities, including Washington D.C., Houston, Philadelphia, Dallas and New York. Ten countries will participate in the Road to Brazil series of matches, representing four continents.

Tickets for both matchups are available for purchase through the Redskins Ticket Office by calling 301-276-6050 or visiting Tickets for Concerts, Sports, Arts, Theater, Family, Events, more. Official Ticketmaster site.

The Spain game should be decent, a few of the fringe players trying to put themselves into contention for a starting place for the World Cup, and a few of the big names at least getting a run out. They've won the last 3 major international tournaments and are a truly special side.

Doubt the United/Inter games will be up to much (as pre-season friendlies tend not to be in most sports), the bigger names having been given an extended break after the world cup. Saying that, if they've committed to games in the US, sure the sponsors will want to at least see 30 minutes from the likes of Rooney/van Persie/Mata/Hernanes.
