Default Release: Redskins Make Roster Moves (L. Jones, et al)

    For Immediate Release

    October 20, 2009

    REDSKINS MAKE ROSTER MOVES

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed running back Quinton Ganther, tackle Levi Jones, and defensive end Renaldo Wynn to their 53-man roster. To make room on the active roster, Washington released running backs Anthony Alridge and Marcus Mason, and punter Glenn Pakulak.

Jones spent the last seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, who chose him with the 10th overall pick in the 2002 NFL Draft out of Arizona State. Jones, who will wear No. 76, has played in 94 career games, starting 89, with all but two coming at left tackle.

Ganther, whose first name is pronounced quin-TAHN, will wear No. 35. He has played in 13 games over the last three seasons for the Tennessee Titans. He spent the majority of 2006 and 2007 on the Titans practice squad before sticking to the 53-man roster for all of 2008. Last season, Ganther had nine carries for 61 yards (6.8 avg.) and caught six passes for 43 yards.

Wynn was released by the Redskins on Saturday to make room for Pakulak.

Alridge, who signed with Redskins on Sept. 22, was active for one contest, but did not play, and inactive for the last three. Mason played in three games in a reserve role for Washington, registering six carries for 19 yards (3.2 avg.). Pakulak served as the Redskins punter the last two weeks, filling in for an injured Hunter Smith. He punted 13 times for 498 yards (38.3 avg.), with a net average of 33.2 yards.

I understand the signing of Jones and re-signing of Wynn but Quinton Ganther? A guy who doesn't know any of our terminology is better than BOTH Mason and Aldridge? You just know our FO had to do SOMETHING that makes no sense.

The question becomes, is Jones in shape to be able to play more then 10 plays a game?

I would think he should be after the BYE week. I don't think anyone is expecting much from him against the Eagles.

Unless Ganther's a Special Teams wunderkind, I don't even see him being active or contributing in any way. This is a VERY puzzling signing.

Didn't Shanahan recommend Alridge? Is Vinny trying to stabb him in the back? Our FO doesn't have a clue.

In 2008, in 13 games Ganther had 9 carries for 61 yards-6.8 yds/carry with a long of 22 yards, caught 6 passes for 43 yards-7.2 yards per reception (longest 15 yards)...um....oh, no fumbles.

No fumbles...could that be the attraction?

One can't help but wonder if having Aldridge on the roster was supposed to be some sort of incentive for Shannahan to come here. With the reported double rebuff, there was no reason to keep a guy that the coaches were clearly leery of putting on the field. Just a thought but with this Front Office, not completely out of the realm of possibility.

NOTHING is out of the realm of possibility with this FO, Neo. THAT'S the scary part.

It is patently absurd that the presence of Alridge would have ANY effect on the deliberations of Mike Shanahan.

Now, Jay Cutler may be another story.

Let's face it, the additional players were on the street after 6 weeks for a reason.

    They are not very good.

The fact they may be better than the backups or starters the club has been paying since February is just another indictment of Cerrato.

I knew Batiste couldn't play tackle from the get-go and it was quite probable that Rinehart would end up being no better than a second-tier reserve.

What a waste of a draft pick.

Will Montgomery has better skills than Rinehart and he cost nothing to sign.
