Random Commanders Thoughts

Here's the problem - instead of thinking about moving on and building this thing back up so many are still caught in the trap of thinking Crowder, Preston Smith, Richardson,Norman, etc are still part of a future here where the team is successful.

The owner and Allen seem to reflect these sentiments as well.

Make believe the injuries are the sole reason this team isn't in the playoffs.

Make believe we are really close to having something here.

Can this team hover around 8-8 bringing back the same players while hoping for the best?

Maybe.

But that's more kicking the can down the road.

Smith (35) and McCoy (32) are all we have at qb. We can't compete for a championship with these players even if they are 100% healthy.

Our skill position talent on offense is either compromised by chronic and unending injury problems or just not up to the standards of what our division rivals have.

Nobody in the NFC East has a 14-2 team.

But the Cowboys have an Elliott, Cooper, Prescott. The Eagles have two good quarterbacks to continue to build around. The Giants have Barkley, Beckham, Shepard and Engram.

The Redskins can't compete with that.

On defense the Cowboys are better. More consistent rush. Linebackers in another league from what we have. Secondary is still not top notch but they have safeties that can tackle.

Philly has a better defense even with 3 starters on IR.

Giants are about even with us, we have the edge going forward because of the investments in younger DL.

But overall the Redskibs roster is not built for success on the field or under the cap.

Josh Norman, Ryan Kerrigan, Jordan Reed, are all overpaid.

Free agents at the mid-tier like Stacy McGhee, Zach Brown, Paul Richardson, etc are disappointments.

The 2016 draft class is a bust with Doctson providing embarrassingly low production for a 16 game starter. Su'a Cravens barely played here and we essentially traded a #2 pick for a #6 . Big mistakes there.

From 2015-18 despite the likely departure of Cousins the team never saw fit to invest any draft resources in a younger qb to groom despite a couple of those years being fairly deep in qb prospects.

Now we go hat in hand into a weak qb class in 2019 to try and remedy the situation.

To me you tear this down and end the facade.

Keep Allen, Payne, Williams, Scherff, Guice, some of the younger defensive backs, Trey Quinn, Rouillier, Ioannidis, and the specialists Hopkins and Way. Some of the younger guys on IR like Geron Christian to see what we may have there for the future.

But to me Crowder should not be resigned to a multi year deal nor should Preston Smith. Let them go elsewhere to try and develop some consistency in their games.

Part ways with all the loud mouths including Brown and Norman. Nobody did as much talking and as little playing in 2018 than these two.

I might take a chance on bringing back Chris Thompson but Reed needs to go.

We need a younger, cheaper TE that can be a three down performer for us.

We have had the worst group of blocking TEs in the NFL for quite awhile.

Wide receivers among the worst as a group as well.

This team is closer to 5-11 than a 13-3 contender.

Until they admit the truth within Redskins Park even if it is only to themselves there is little hope of breaking the cycle.

We are going to be finishing third or fourth in the NFC East.

Problem with giving them the benefit of the doubt is that almost none of them have earned it. Crowder is the only WR we have with a history of success in DC. All of the others have a lot to prove (in Doctson's case, that's an extreme understatement).

Coulda, shoulda, woulda. I do understand the impact of the QB carousel. But our WR corps looked pretty damn weak even when Alex was in there. We could point to 'new QB' as a factor too. But the bottom line, we don't look to have any current difference makers on this roster. Ironically, the two most electric players we appear to have are Quinn and Sims. They'd immediately be my #3 and #4 WRs, with potential for one of them to move to #2 .

I ask myself the question....

What if the Skins had made that mid season trade for Cooper or Tate?

Would Cooper have energized our offense in the same way it did for the Cowboys?

Or would his number have suffered to because we had a combination of McCoy, Sanchez and Johnson under centre?
Was the root cause of the problem the throwing or the catching?

And as our production across the pass offence as a whole was way down... is it that all our receivers are subpar or having bad years?
Or is there something more fundamental at play?

I tend to think it was a bit of both to be honest. I don't think having Alex trying to break in a new system (I think for instance Reed's stats improved after Alex was injured. It's been well documented that the two of them struggled to get timing right) and then a carousel of QB's and O-line helped at all, but I'm also sure that none of our Receiving weapons (either TE or WR's) stepped up to elevate the unit.

Plus at this point we can't simply replace them all, we have much bigger issues... most notably under centre at the QB position.

I suspect we have got to hope that this was a slump year from our Receiver corps and that they can bounce back next year behind a healthy O-line, a new (or possibly returning QB).

***Lots of really good stuff deleted for brevity***

We are going to be finishing third or fourth in the NFC East.

I don't disagree with any of that to be honest.

But We can't turn over the whole roster in one off season, it takes time and direction.

When talking about our receiving corps, I see them as one of the least of our problems at the moment, and one that could possibly be explained by a slump and/or injuries on the offense (especially at QB).

We need to sort out the QB position first and foremost. We look really thin at RB to me. AP may not be back, Thompson isn't an every down back and we need to hope Guice can come back full strength. But that area concerns me. We need to invest in a secondary on Defense as it's the weak link there, and find a DJ replacement. We need more talent/depth on the O-line, or at least more health.
There's ALOT of gaps to fill all over the team. WR/TE is, while not elite, a spot where we do have some talent... albeit we need to give them a little benefit of the doubt. At least to survive through 2019.
Doctson showed flashes, Reed looked better late in the season. Richardson needs to prove he can stay on the field but also showed flashes. Quinn looked good briefly.

If we're rolling with a new QB next year (or at least with McCoy - I don't think Alex will be back for the season start), then I'd be tempted just to roll with the WR corps we have and then take a fresh look at them in 2020. Of course if a draft pick or a trade becomes obvious then go for it. But we have bigger fish to fry across the team in my opinion.

I don't agree.

Gutting the roster in 2019 and going younger allows us to set ourselves up with one of the top picks in 2020 when the quarterback class is expected to be much more robust than in 2019.

And that will coincide with working off Alex Smith's cap hit.

I agree with this post.

it took one year of the Caps being out of the paloffs that I was able to accept as long as it got rid of GMGM and Adam Oates. It did on both counts and eventually did lead to a Stanley Cup.

Now... the Redskins' FO structure and ownership aren't a ruptured pustule on the ass of the Caps' FO, I know. On second thought, nevermind. We're comparing a team that is a failure if it doesn't make it out of the second round of the paloffs versus one that couldn't beat Our Lady of the Worthless Miracle sixteen times a season and would probably be outdrawn at home.

If we are to be honest with ourselves the Redskins barring some unforseen developments are not going to be a contender in 2019.

So, if we are not in position to be able to truly contend, why hold up the pretense of 'competing for a playoff spot'?

To me going to the playoffs at 9-7 or 8-8 as a quirk on the last weekend of the season is not worth delaying long needed changes.

The ultimate goal is to put together a championship roster.

With the bust of the Griffin pick in 2012, having no #1 picks in 2013 and 2014 and a bust in Doctson in 2016, the Redskins are badly in need of adding top end talent.

That is going to come within the top 5-7 picks of the draft and we are never going to get there if the team is determined to make just enough moves to keep this team in the 7-9 area and picking #1 5 or #1 6.

The other teams in our division all have players that one can quickly identify as difference makers on the field regardless of the competition. We don't have them.

We have no Carson Wentz or Ezekiel Elliott or Beckham or Barkley.

We don't have a Fletcher Cox or a Demarcus Lawrence either.

Despite having so many linebackers taken in the draft - Preston Smith, Ryan Anderson, etc. in recent years we don't have anyone to compare to Vander Esch or Jaylon Smith.

It seems clear to me there is a wide talent gap between the organizations and that gap only seemed to get larger as 2018 came to an end.

The NFC East may have been a 'dog' division in 2018 with no 12 or 13 win team to put out there, but I can see a healthy Eagles team posting 11-13 wins in 2019.

One could make an argument that with another good draft and a free agent signing or two that Dallas could be an 11 or 12 win team as well.

With younger, more talented rosters the Redskins without significant changes in approach are going to continue to fall further behind these other clubs.

You won't get any argument from me over this...why not just play it to advance the youth?

Here's the problem...if that were the case, and the Skins weren't just fighting for a playoff spot or perhaps the crown in a weak division, why would they keep Gruden?

I like your theory, I wish it were the direction the team was headed, but keeping Gruden makes it clear this FO thinks we can be competitive enough next year to go to the playoffs.

Of course you and I know that is a recipe for the status quo of around 7-9 to 9-7 we've seen for the better part of 20 years.

Obviously tanking the season would have every veteran on the roster ready to leave town. Going Bulldogs route is nothing more than quitting. That's how they'll take it.
Hoping to lose double digit games, in the false hope that great players only come in the top 10 picks.

Besides, it's an outdated recipe. Free agency doesn't allow teams to keep that many top players. They become free agents that are too expensive to keep together.

Plus, as El said, you don't even attempt such foolishness when you're keeping your coach.

So Dan and Bruce double down......

Other words, Brian LaFemina was fired so Brucie's role could actually be expanded.

This team is ****ed.

actually he was fired because he vocal against the signing of Rueben Foster

Probably more a matter of a convenient excuse, more than anything else, just to put Brucie in that role. Can't have someone in that role who told Snyder and Brucie that they were making mistakes.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, most players are only in it for the money! Do you think that a player would willingly play for the Redskins because he wants to play football? The players know they will get paid no matter if it's a 13-3 season or a 3-13. Put players on an incentive based contract and see how many will sign!

Well, there are some hard heads that can't stomach a strategic retreat to fight another day but want to prove their manhood by charging a fortified position with clear fields of fire.

So for those folks let's go ahead and double down on trying to win in 2019 with a squad that doesn't have one impact playmaker and a salary cap challenge looming that will likely prevent any significant free agent signings.

Good luck to those on the ‘Bruce' train.

Looks more like Pickett's Charge to me.

There's someone ON the Bruce train?

Who knew?

Well it seems some fans want to follow Bruce's illogical conclusion that the team is better off than most believe and we should bring back the band for 2019 and go to war with what we have to try and win something.

What exactly? A wildcard spot? A . 500 record?

To me It's burying one's head in the sand and ignoring the coming storm.

I dunno brother, at least where I hang out I'm seeing nearly none of that. Fans are pissed. And again, it's the intentional lack of communication that is pissing people over the edge. There's definitely a 'we'll do what we want and the fans can go **** themselves!' vibe to it all.

Dan Snyder reminds me of the young ten year old kid who wants everyone to like him and desires to be the center of attention. Then he wonders why no one shows up to his birthday party that momma so painstakingly set up.

Then momma, in the form of Bruce Allen, shields him from all the criticism as she (he) tries to make it all better. Want a new toy? How about a shiny new free agent? Or how about a Kyler Murray special toy in the first round?

The fans are not going to fall for it this time. I hope. Bah.

Even if Snyder didn't believe the national media or WP commentary on the Redskins and Bruce Allen all he has to do is look at the record since 2010 and all of the draft failures. All the players he couldn't wait to see play here and then was disappointed when they failed to perform.

It doesn't take the savviest business mind to objectively evaluate what has happened here both on the field and off it.

One thing is for sure.

Bruce Allen has found himself a real pidgeon in Daniel Snyder.
