The performance of Peterson points up how the decision making of the Redskins in the past has been holding them back.
Doug and Kyle brought Adrian in and then once Gruden saw him workout then he was all in favor of signing him. Meanwhile, Bruce luckily was out of the loop and could only ratify the move later on.
What Peterson's performance shows is that the Redskins should keep the doors open when looking for talent.
Without Peterson Gruden would be going with Perine and Mack Brown and we would be nowhere.
A team as back needy as Washington doesn't have the option of just dismissing guys out of hand.
But Bruce and Jay on their own seem content with going with cheap draft picks and undrafted free agents like Perine, Kelley, Ryan Grant, and replacement level vets like Lauvao without even trying to upgrade for the given season with vets who were released or talented guys that were hurt the year before and are looking for a chance to show they can still play.
With the lack of production at WR this team really needs to bring in Dez Bryant and have him work out for the club.
Don't tell me he would be the
#4 or
#5 WR on this team because the top 4 haven't as a group been performing at an NFL level week in and week out.
We had another vet, John Sullivan, in here to play center when Spencer Long went down and he played well. But instead of resigning him we went with Rouillier at center and brought Lauvao back at guard.
That was a mistake. The team could have resigned Sullivan to play center and put Chase at LG for 1-2 years.
Instead Sullivan is the starting center on the 6-0 Rams and we were back to relying on Lauvao who is hurt for the third consecutive season.
These are personnel mistakes that make a difference in wins and losses.
Belichick has no qualms about picking up guys like James Harrison or Josh Gordon if he thinks they can help for the given season, there is no marriage in New England with draft picks or free agents.
If they don't produce they don't get a second year, they are gone.
And the search for talent and upgrades never stops.
At 11-3 last year New England was still bringing in veteran guys for workouts and signed a couple heading into the playoffs.
Doug and Kyle did the right thing.
Whether Brucie and Jay agree or not Peterson is a better back at 33 than Kelley, Perine will ever be.
And we can admit that Peterson is not what he was 2-3 years ago, so that shows how shallow the talent behind Guice really was all along.
If a draft pick is a bust let's admit it before we decide to leave him on the roster for 2-3 years to avoid admiring the mistake.
And if you do want to keep him then admit the guy is the backup's backup and not someone the team can rely ypin until proven otherwise.
