Random Commanders Thoughts

The Dolphins have given up 40 pts a game this season, and 180 yards per game on the ground. We scored 17.

Please tell me we aren't this stupid.

I'll see you & raise you a Manusky coached defense held someone to two td's.

The other thing that's been killing the run game(especially under Jay),as Cooley pointed out repeatedly, the Redskins were not "marrying" the run game to the pass game.

They always tipped off when they were running by formation or personnel. The sad thing was even the fans, whether at home or in the stands, recognized it too.

What we saw yesterday was some tweaks to remedy this. The first Mclaurin TD was out of a three TE set I believe. Hopefully KOC and Callahan keep it trending this way and we see gradual improvement.

This is what I was thinking as well. It was never the amount of running plays Gruden called. It was that the run plays never seemed like part of an actual plan. It was almost as if Gruden called a run play because he couldn't think of a passing play he liked. That and Gruden never met a 1000-yard rusher he didn't want to bench. Putting Peterson in street clothes for week one? Was it a coincidence that the last guy who rushed for over 1000 yards for Gruden (Alfred Morris) got run out of town?

This team has a long way to go to prove anything to anyone about anything, but embracing a constant run game would be a start. Even if just a small one.

Of course, the Giants have given up 31.4 points a game this season, and 141 yards per game on the ground. We scored 3. And ran for 55.

So scoring 17 could be looked at as a marked improvement. :)

In other news, if we trade even a 7th rounder for a coach who while successful, has been backed up by a front office that knows what the hell they are doing, I'll never have anything to do with this team again.

Brian McClelland.

Mike Rizzo.

With two championship caliber teams in town with two different owners, an owner at Redskins Park should be able to learn a few things.

One, the coach is helpless if he doesn't have the RIGHT players.

There aren't any players on the Caps or Nationals that are basically stealing the money like Josh Norman or holding out because somebody pissed in his Wheaties like the entitled Trent Williams.

And who is keeping these players?

That fan in Miami that had the ‘Fire Bruce Allen' sign flown in fact needed a BlueAngels flyover in Ashburn 😆😆😆😆

Indeed. It was a bad sign that Allen didn't get escorted out with Gruden. And why is Trent Williams still here? Or anyone else of any value for that matter? This season is done and the trade deadline is on two weeks. Evidently there are two nitwits left on the planet that think this team is going to do something this year, and they both work at Redskins Park

Quick question for those of you who watched the game. Not that it matters much now but there's a play where the phins went for 2 and apparently converted. The ball is thrown to the TE and bounces off the ground yet is marked as a 1st down. Did the skins challenge this play at all?

If you go to 1:55 of the video there's 8:14 on the playclock on a 4th and 2. Shoulda been turnover in downs right

Doesn't mean a thing now, but was curious if this was discussed by the booth at all

For all the talk about a dearth of talent on this team, I for one would like to see what we have here, with some proper coaching, before giving up on everyone.

Gruden never, and I mean NEVER got players to overachieve. He was consistent at getting them to underachieve.

I bet Haskins has learned more in the last couple weeks than he had since being drafted. I'll bet it has accelerated his ability to take the reigns, sooner now.

As for depth, just like most teams, the backups are backups for a reason.

See: Cowpies/Fecals

Barring a tie this weekend, one of them will have lost 4 in a row.

Even if he doesn't stick, just TRYING to get a fullback is a welcome thought.

Michael Burton FB Whoever he is.

I'm all in on seeing Haskins play sooner rather than later - especially against good defenses. Need a good sample set to decide whether to keep him or draft QB again.

A couple more weeks of getting more direct attention in practice should only help him just a little to succeed in his first start.

But if he has to come in due to injury, or whatever, sooner? I'm confident than he will be much better prepared than he was before.

Also agree that Gruden screwed Haskins over. A real class act Gruden. That said, the present problem is to see what we have in large gametime doses. Is he potentially great? Good? Or just a one year wonder? We need some real evidence in gametime conditions against good teams and bad. Your point about coaching is valid. It's beyond me how a team can invest a number one pick in what they think is the future and then dwaddle over known commodities like McCoy and Keenum. The very first game put the lie to this being a top five defense. This "we're on the cusp" nonsense has been plaguing roster and coaching decisions for years. Find out what we have, figure out the most value-adding gaps and draft/sign FAs accordingly, hire some coaches who are gametime savvy and get on with it. Other teams don't always succeed doing the same, but they sure seem to succeed now and then.

The Redskins did challenge it and lost. If I remember, the call on the field stood, so they couldn't conclusively say he dropped it. It was pretty close. Ultimately, the Redskins intercepted Rosen two plays later, so it really didn't matter.

I completely agree. On a team with poor run blocking TEs and the ones they do have continuing to get hurt, this move makes a ton of sense. Hopefully he's a mauler and opens up even more holes for Peterson. The next few weeks will be tough sledding, but this is still the right move.

Gotcha, and yeah the skins picked him off pretty much right after. Looked like an incompletion to me but all good. I could get used to our team on the positive side of turnovers for a change

It shows the coach knows his RB runs best with a FB in front of him, so he adjusts the game to meet the player's strength.

This. The kind of thinking that Gibbs used to win 3 Super Bowls and the kind of thinking few coaches have today. Football is now more about the system than the player.

I never understood the BS regarding the running backs situation.

Gruden claiming that Peterson had to be inactive because of numbers on special teams and at the RB position is ridiculous.

Somehow the Patriots are able to have Michel, White, Bolden and Birkhead active and also had FB Develin active before he went on IR.

Michel does not play ST.

Here in DC we don't have enough backs on the roster period.

We have Peterson, Thompson and Smallwood only.

Going with 3 is light around the NFL and leaves us exposed at a position where there is more attrition than any other during the course of the NFL season.

Especially as Thompson and Smallwood are scatbacks/receivers and not every down rushers.

Again roster construction is a major issue and has been for years.

We always get caught short, from the year we cut Nate Sudfeld and ended up with only 2 qbs to the year we seemed to start the year with 100 linebackers but only 3 safeties!

Hopefully, the FO was just trying to appease the loser. In an effort to make him happy.

We are definitely light at RB. signing the FB is a good 1st step. We need another back though. And Guice isn't quite ready yet, is he?

Gruden claiming that Peterson had to be inactive because of numbers on special teams and at the RB position is ridiculous.

Goober Gruden was a loser. That some even tried to defend his position on that was absurd. He had a royal hard-on for Peterson for God knows whatever reason, just like his love for his pet projects would barely make any other NFL roster.

AP has a mouth and a big ego. You know who else had those things? John Riggins. Didn't stop Joe Gibbs from going to his home and talking him into returning to the team. Smart coaches don't play power mind games with players who are critical to success.

My guess? Gruden probably campaigned not to resign AP last off-season in favor of Perine and Guice and got overruled. Sitting AP was his passive-aggressive way of making a point to his superiors.

Not smart. Even if AP was over the line at times (I mean we're talking about a guy who, when his QB audibles to a passing play says ‘nah - we ain't doin that!') Gruden could've pulled him in, puffed him up, told him how much he needs him this year, and got him on board with a plan both could support. Instead, benches a HOFer.
