Random Commanders Thoughts

Strength of schedule is used to determine tiebreaker for draft order.
In the draft, it just works the opposite way as a playoff spot tiebreaker.
The team with the easier schedule picks before the team they tie with.
So apparently we had an easier schedule than the Packers.

Again, though, these other teams don't bother me. 49ers, Raiders, Packers don't need a qb.

It's really the qbs in this draft class, the depth of the prospects, that makes 2018 special.

Skins have *reportedly* signed Kapri Bibbs RB to a 2 year deal.

He has looked promising in limited action, so that's a smart move.

I doubt Manusky gets fired after one season.
And I doubt Guenther takes a demotion to a different role, all the while he's being considered for a promotion.

What the.....that makes zero sense. Cincinnati defense ranks.....

29th in total points
32nd in total yards (last)
28th in passing yards
32nd in rush yards (last)

That's like hiring Hazmat 2.0

Coincidentally, it's Jon Gruden, not Jay Gruden, who is now reportedly planning to hire Guenther as his D.C.

The 49ers and Oakland were in a tie-break scenario re the draft, and San Fran won that coin toss, so San Fran has the first choice in rounds 1, 3, 5 & 7, where Oakland has first choice in the others. (First choice is between these two teams only.) If we are equal 13th, wouldn't we toss a coin (which we'll lose!) and pick AFTER the Pack in the first round, 3rd, 5th & 7th, whereas we'll pick before the Pack in rounds 2, 4 & 6?
Not sure where you got this from. According to nfl.com, they haven't flipped yet. And once they do, the winner picks ninth in every round.

The Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers will flip a coin to break a tie for the ninth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
The winner of the flip will pick ninth and the loser 10th.

EDIT: Unless I'm reading it wrong

After The Dunbar signing this is the 2nd best thing to hear regarding our team, for 2018 anyways.

Now if Lava is released I may do The Safety Dance!

(Men without hats version)

Does anyone get the feeling that Jay Gruden is a younger, less whiny version of Norv Turner?

Plaudits as OC, becomes HC and then goes on to field mediocre teams.

One year it's injuries.

Last year it was the kicker (who he went to bat for early on to keep) who cost us two wins and a couple of poor performances from Cousins and the offense when it counted most.

In 2015 we made the playoffs with a middling 9-7 record on a soft schedule and then got taken to the tool shed 37-11 at home by the Packers.

A lot of this seems to be a re-run from 1996 or 1997.

Even trading off the Frerotte head butt of a wall vs Cousins running around yelling about himself last year after that win at home against Green Bay.

It's eerily similar on some levels.

Am I the only one wondering WTH a 'Passing Game Coordinator' is? I don't know if not having a real OC calling plays hurts or helps us - don't think one season, with the talent loss due to injury, tells the tale. I don't exactly think Gruden had a lot of options in many circumstances with a severe lack of playmakers on the field. Regardless - no idea what this change actually means in terms of Kevin O'Connell's duties?

Hopefully it's Gruden's way of saying that offensive productivity has to improve in 2018 and he's admitting to himself he is too busy as HC to see to all the details.

Cooley really ripped the passing game from receivers running the wrong routes or failing to improve over 16 games to tight ends who can't block to a quarterback whose tendencies are known by our division rivals and yet the game plan fails to change to account for it.

I guess I'm wondering specifically what the scope of the increased responsibilities might be? Seems like a half-measure to me? Why not truly hand over the offense to an OC?

If there is one change this offseason please let it be Jay relinquishing playcalling duties. His tendencies are figured out, especially the no runs & no in-game adjustability.

Washington's lack of run game is a huge contributor to our record, namely Jay's noncommittal.

For the season we ranked
24th in rush attempts w/ 401 for 1448 yards

Kirk alone had 49 for 179 yards

Take away our qb's attempts and yards we're

359 attempts (32nd) 1269 yards (32nd)

Jay's playcalling is THE problem

We're not built to run to begin with. We have only two bonefide run blockers on this line: Williams and Scherff. If they stick with Roullier, he might make it three. The rest are finesse guys that play with no leverage.

Pay attention when we do run. Our backs get met in the backfield alot.

Well it definitely seems Jay agrees with you and says eff it quite often. I mean why try right?

And I thought we got rid of the finesse guys with Shanny. Maybe time to rethink Callahan's contract as well.

When you look at our TEs: Reed can't block and Vernon Davis is very spotty.

Gruden brags on Sprinkle's size and how he can block but he gets used sparingly.

Part of it is "want to" and the other is personnel.

Agree on Reed & Davis, I'm hoping both get released this offseason actually. There's a few (not many) TE's considered well rounded in this draft. Let's hope a decent pick is spent on one.

The Redskins tight ends and receivers are poor blockers AND we don't have a franchise back.

The answer is not the chicken or the egg in this case but BOTH.

Better schemes and execution would have lead to more consistent production.

But the presence of an Ezekiel Elliott or Todd Gurley would have made everything look a WHOLE lot better as well.

If we get a bigger, more athletic back we might also finallly find a a guy that can stand upright for 16 games.

Well, I've said half jokingly before, but now I'm not sure it isn't true.....Jay Gruden wouldn't know how to use Jim Brown.

BT is exactly right, a better scheme would have been producing more. But to think someone with little more than disdain for running the ball is going to try to improve his scheme isn't very realistic.
