Game Notes: Washington Redskins vs. Dallas Cowboys

• The Redskins earned their first division title since 1999 with a 28-18 win against the Dallas Cowboys in front of an announced crowd of 82,845 people at FedExField on Sunday.
• At 10-6, the Redskins are NFC East champions for the first time since 1999. The championship is the Redskins’ 14th division title in team history.
• Washington has now clinched its 23rd playoff berth in team history and the first playoff berth since the 2007 season.
• The Redskins are the fourth team since 1990 to earn a playoff berth after opening the season 3-6. Washington is the first 3-6 team to do so since the 1996 Jacksonville Jaguars.
• The win represents the Redskins’ seventh consecutive and gives the team its first seven-game winning streak since winning seven in a row in Weeks 2-9 of the 1996 season.
• The seven-game winning streak is the Redskins seventh winning streak of seven or more games in a single season in team history, excluding playoffs (seven in 1996, 11 in 1991, nine in 1983, nine in 1972, nine in 1942, seven in 1940). Washington made NFL Championship/Super Bowl appearances in four of these five seasons, winning two titles.
• The win was the Redskins’ 10th win this season, the team’s highest total since 2005. This marks the 17th season of 10 or more wins for the Redskins in team history.
• With the Redskins winning the NFC East one season after finishing in last in the division, the Redskins completed their first “worst-to-first” one-season turnaround in team history.
• The victory was Head Coach Mike Shanahan’s 175th combined regular season and postseason win as an NFL head coach, pushing him past Mike Holmgren for sole possession of 11th all-time in NFL history.
• Running back Alfred Morris rushed 33 times for 200 rushing yards with three touchdowns, all career highs. With the 200 yards on Sunday, Morris finished the season with 1,613 yards, breaking Clinton Portis’ team record for rushing yards in a season (1,516 in 2005).
• Morris finished second in the NFL in rushing yards (1,613) and rushing touchdowns (13) this season behind Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson and Houston’s Arian Foster, respectively.
• The three rushing touchdowns tied a Redskins’ team record, marking the 22nd time a Redskin has rushed for three touchdowns in a game.
• The 200-yard rushing performance by Morris is a Redskins rookie record and is the first by a Redskin of any experience level since Gerald Riggs’ team-record 221 yards on Sept. 17, 1989, vs. Philadelphia.
• The 33 carries were a Redskins rookie record and the most since Portis had 36 rushing attempts on Nov. 4, 2007.
• The game was Morris’ seventh 100-yard rushing performance of the season, the most by a Redskin since Portis in 2005 (nine).
• Morris’ 200 yards are the most by a Redskin in a single game in the Mike Shanahan era.
• The Redskins finished with 2,709 rushing yards for the season, breaking the team record for rushing yards in a season (formerly 2,625 in 1983).
• With that total, the Redskins earned the team rushing crown for the 2012 season. The rushing title is the Redskins’ first since 1933, the team’s second year of existence. That season, the Boston Redskins rushed for a league-high 2,258 yards.
• The Redskins also finished the season first in the NFL in yards per play (6.18) and passing yards per play (7.87).
• Washington broke the 200-yard rushing mark for the fourth time this season, giving the Redskins’ four games of 200-plus rushing yards this season, tied for the team’s most since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger (four in 1985).
• The Redskins had 361 total net yards, giving them 6,131 on the season, the third-highest total in team history. This season marks the third time Washington has broken the 6,000-yard mark in a season (1983 and 1989).
• Quarterback Robert Griffin III completed 9-of-18 passes for 100 yards. He finished his rookie regular season having completed 258-of-393 passes for 3,200 yards with 20 touchdowns and a passer rating of 102.4.
• Griffin III set NFL rookie records for passer rating (102.4, surpassing Russell Wilson’s 100.0 passer rating this season and Ben Roethlisberger’s 98.1 from the 2004 season) and for percentage of passes intercepted (1.3 percent, breaking Charlie Batch’s 1.98 percent).
• With his first pass attempt, Griffin III set the team rookie record for pass attempts in a season, surpassing Norm Snead (375 in 1961).
• Griffin III finishes the regular season with team rookie records for completions (258), pass attempts (393), passing yards (3,200), passing touchdowns (20), completion percentage (65.6) and passer rating (102.4). He also hold team records for rushing attempts (120), rushing yards (815) and rushing touchdowns (seven) for a quarterback of any experience level.
• Griffin III became the fourth quarterback to rush for 800 yards in a season, joining Randall Cunningham, Bobby Douglass and Michael Vick (twice).
• The Redskins did not turn the ball over on Sunday, setting a team record for fewest turnovers in a season (14), surpassing the team record of 16 set in a nine-game season in 1982.
• Sunday marked the sixth game this season the Redskins finished a game without a turnover, a team record.
• The Redskins finished the season with different leaders in receptions (Joshua Morgan, 48), receiving yards (Pierre Garçon, 633) and receiving touchdowns (Santana Moss, eight). This gives the Redskins three different leaders in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns for the first time since 2000.
• Cornerback Richard Crawford registered his first career interception in the first quarter, picking off Tony Romo and returning it 11 yards.
• Kicker Kai Forbath’s NFL-record 17 consecutive field goals made to open his career ended in the first quarter when his 37-yard field goal attempt hit the right upright.
• Linebacker London Fletcher recorded his first sack of the game by dropping Romo for a four-yard loss in the first quarter.
• Cornerback Josh Wilson registered his second interception of the year, picking off Romo in the first quarter. The interception was Wilson’s first since Week 7 at New York.
• With the interception, the Redskins registered their seventh multi-interception game, the team’s most since posting seven multi-interception games in 1999.
• Washington registered two first-quarter interceptions for the first time since Week 11 vs. Philadelphia.
• Washington is now 7-2 this season in games in which their opponent has scored first.
• Morris opened the scoring for Washington with a 17-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. It was his 11th rushing touchdown of the season.
• With the touchdown, Morris broke the Redskins’ rookie record for total touchdowns in a season previously held by Pro Football Hall of Famer Charley Taylor (10 in 1964).
• The run also pushed Morris beyond 1,500 rushing yards on the season, the second such season by a Redskin in team history (Portis in 2005).
• Morris is the fourth rookie in NFL history to reach the 1,600-yard mark rushing, joining Eric Dickerson (1,808 in 1983), George Rogers (1,674 in 1981) and Ottis Anderson (1,605 in 1979).
• Washington took its first lead of the game on a 10-yard touchdown run by Griffin III in the third quarter. It was Griffin III’s seventh touchdown run of the season and his first since scoring two rushing touchdowns in Week 6 vs. Minnesota.
• In the fourth quarter, Morris scored his second touchdown of the day on a 32-yard run. It was Morris’ third multi-touchdown game of the season.
• Fletcher registered his career-high-tying second sack of the game in the fourth quarter, giving him 37 for his career. It was Fletcher’s fifth multi-sack game of his career and his first Dec. 4, 2005 at Miami as a member of the Buffalo Bills.
• Fletcher finished the season with 3.0 sacks, his most since 2005.
• Niles Paul had a 48-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter, the longest by an NFL player listed as a tight end since 1981 (56, Chicago’s Emery Moorehead).
• Morris scored his third rushing touchdown of the night and 13th of the season on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter.
• The Redskins extended their consecutive home sellout streak to an NFL-high 376, including postseason games. The team has sold out all 158 preseason, regular season and postseason games at FedExField.
• With two wins against Dallas this season, the Redskins’ swept the Cowboys this season for the first time since 2005.
• The win was Washington’s fifth home win of the season, the most by the team since winning five home games in 2007.
• The Redskins finished the season 5-1 against NFC East opponents this season, the team’s most wins against divisional opponents since winning five games against the NFC East in 2005.
• Washington was 8-4 against NFC opponents this season, the team’s best conference record since going 10-2 against NFC teams in 2005.
• The Redskins are now 16-15-1 in games televised on Sunday Night Football.

"Washington is now 7-2 this season in games in which their opponent has scored first."

I now have this in a text file on my desktop.

It will be used as needed in the chatroom. :rifle:

The overwhelming feeling of doom as we watch this team fall behind is dwindling... Years of conditioned thought is difficult to over come!

The seven-game winning streak is the Redskins seventh winning streak of seven or more games in a single season in team history, excluding playoffs (seven in 1996, 11 in 1991, nine in 1983, nine in 1972, nine in 1942, seven in 1940). Washington made NFL Championship/Super Bowl appearances in four of these five seasons, winning two titles.

UGH! Started the season 7-0 in 1996 and MISSED the playoffs. Norvous much?

It STILL makes me feel uneasy. It's not so much a feeling of doom, just that I always feel better with a lead. ;)

7-1 lost to Philly first game

we were indeed 7-1 after 8 games in 1996 but had Gus Frerotte at qb and Michael Westbrook as our 'star' players on offense.

no comparison to this year's team.

D'OH! I had forgotten about the first game against the Iggs that year. Hell, I've pretty much blocked out that entire season. As far as I'm concerned, it never happened. :(

I would ALWAYS prefer to win seven in a row at the end of the season than at the beginning.

Would love to see us close out the season with 11 wins in a row.
