Redskins sign Billy Cundiff

How many of us really had any confidence in gano no matter what the distance was? Hell my butt cheeks clinched tighter than at a prison dance everytime he lined up.

It's.A.Kicker.

Surprising, but Gano was hardly ' Mr. Reliable'. If we are going to be a winning franchise, it will be because we aren't relying on whether our kicker is an 'A', 'B', or 'C' player.

Rackers was pretty long in the tooth, right? The fact that he couldn't beat out Gano may have lead the staff to conclude he had nothing left.

Well, the main difference between Cundiff & Gano is touchbacks - something Rackers struggled with this preseason. So...I'm guessing the staff is putting a premium on them.
 
I guess we'll see. I just remember that Scott Norwood was never the same after missing the biggest kick of his life. It will be interesting to see if Cundiff can put "Wide Left" to rest or if that will be the defining moment of HIS career.

Love his kickoffs. Hate his long distance FG accuracy. I'd rather have Gano with the game on the line from 55 yards out.

:cheers: Good point! However, since Cundiff is now a Redskin I'll be cheering my arse off for him......while watching through my fingers every time he kicks. ;)
 
Bleacher Report did a ranking of place kickers in the 2011 season.

They ranked Gano #26 and Cundiff #24.

Hit on 12-of-17 kicks longer than 40 yards, with two misses longer than 50 yards. He did knock down the second-longest kick of the year—a 59-yarder.

Hang Time8
The ball doesn't go far, but his max caught a stunning 4.67 seconds of air.

Carlson Rating5
Gano's 2011 misses in the 30- to 39-yard range (5-of-9) keep his score from being much higher in this area.

Overall29
Gano's failure to rack up touchbacks could cause him to lose his job on kickoffs, but he's still solid as a field-goal kicker.

With 47 touchbacks and an average kick of almost 70 yards in 2011, Cundiff comes in as a very good kickoff specialist.

Cundiff attempted six kicks over 50 yards this year—showing the Ravens have great confidence in his leg power. But he only made one.

Hang Time7
A top hang time of 4.50 seconds puts Cundiff near the top among 2011's kickers.

Carlson Rating5
Cundiff's failure to connect on kicks over 50 yards (1-of-6) hides the fact that he was spot-on inside 30 yards (11-of-11) and missed only five of 25 attempts between 30 and 50 yards.

Overall30
Cundiff does a lot well, but his accuracy on kicks over 50 yards keeps his score low.

Rackers' accuracy ranks high, as does his range. On intermediate kicks (40 to 49 yards) he was just 5-of-9.

A high-scoring kicker, Rackers is a consistent force in the kickoff and field-goal game. His work on kicks 40 yards or deeper could be improved, as could his kickoff range.

Of course, it doesn't take into effect how much a year of Danny Smith will screw up Cundiff's accuracy inside of 50. ;)

Over the past two years, Billy Cundiff is a 90 percent field goal kicker inside the 50 (53 of 59), and no other kicker averaged more yards per kickoff (69.5) or had more touchbacks than his 84. But the Ravens, bugged more by his 1-of-7 from 50-plus in the last two seasons than his crucial miss in the AFC title game last January, cut him Sunday. They prefer to save $1.5 million on the cap and go with a four-year kickoff man from the University of Texas, Justin Tucker. Risky move for a Super Bowl contender.

Nice find Serv. I have to believe this thread wouldn't exist if Gano makes all of those FG's that were blocked last year. Seems like he ended up getting punished for that whether it was partly his fault or not.

Hoping Cundiff makes us forget him in a year or two.
 
Yeah...if those kicks aren't blocked, Gano is an 88% kicker last year, nailing 4 of 6 from 50+, including the Redskins record of 59. Watch: this kid is going to go to a team with competent field goal blocking unit and be awesome.
