Ah Boone, you're being way too kind to the blowhard. I've never forgiven Cowturd for the things he said about Sean Taylor. Haven't listened to him since. His prediction doesnt surprise me at all. Just promise me that once he takes his seat next to you on The Bandwagon, I get to throw his smarmy ass off.

You're right - I am too nice. Here are his comments from back then (courtesy of a great Dan Steinberg column):

    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dcs...an_taylor.html

Serious grown-up talk here. If you can't handle grown-up stuff, then turn the radio to another channel right now, give you about five seconds. We're going to talk about Sean Taylor's death...If you can't deal with that, I have no problem with that at all, none. Right now turn the radio to Oldies 107.8 or another station....All right, now it's just grown-ups, we've gotten the kids out of the room, let's proceed.

Sean Taylor, great player has a history of really really bad judgment, really really bad judgment. Cops, assault, spitting, DUI. I'm supposed to believe his judgment got significantly better in two years, from horrible to fantastic? 'But Colin he cleaned up his act.' Well yeah, just because you clean the rug doesn't mean you got everything out. Sometimes you've got stains, stuff so deep it never ever leaves.

My gut feeling with this story, and we said yesterday, yesterday was not really a day to go out, yesterday was sort of a day, you know, grieving, but we're past the memorial part. It's grown-up time, ask yourself realistic questions....Just because somebody cleans the rugs doesn't mean there aren't stains. No matter what those commercials, OxiClean, tell you on cable TV, some stains you can't get out. And if you have bad judgment for 23 years of your life, even if you clean it up, your judgment doesn't get great over night.

I want to know the truth. I want to know the details. It's not pretty? I don't care, I'm a grown-up. I can handle not pretty. A lot of people can't in the media, a lot of people can't, 'Oh, wah wah wah, sensitivity, he's a great person, wah wah wah.' Hey, I don't care, that's fine, he died, let's get to the truth. We're all about the truth. We always say on this show, we're not always good, we're always honest. Just give me honesty.

I didn't grow up African American. I grew up middle class. I wanted Stephen A.'s perspective on the story. And during this story I leaned on Stephen A., Michael Wilbon and Jason Whitlock for a perspective I don't have. You walk around ESPN, it's in the halls, on the posters, Diversity, Capital D, big letter. You know why Diversity's really important at ESPN, a big company? Because it gives you more people with unique perspectives. And if you're a growing company, you want to stay fresh, you need to have a 23-year old Hispanic gal or guy tell us what's going on in your community. Asian, white, black, Hispanic, everybody, new voices, young voices, old voices. You walk the halls of ESPN, it's the United Nations. It's great. Canadians, Hispanics, Europeans. They give us a perspective we don't have.

No, all the information's not in. But I feel pretty confident that my gut feeling, like any of yours, by the way, is right and was right.
I don't know - maybe he's apologized for those comments since, really don't know. But it does make it hard to like the guy.

I've never liked Cowherd, even before I learned of his chronic distaste for the Redskins or heard of his complete jackassery when Sean Taylor died. I just don't think he's particularly informative, entertaining or insightful. Never have. So I've never felt the need to legitimize any of his opinions by acknowledging them, for good or ill.

That said, I loved this part:

The only thing I do know is that your certain dismissal of my Redskins chances this coming year is the same ‘easy out’ sports journalists have been taking for years. Daniel Snyder is an ass and the Redskins aren’t relevant in the NFC East. It’s that simple, right?

The Redskins will win at least 8 games in 2012, but that kind of prediction is small potatoes, so let me throw one out there that will really rock your paradigm. The pecking order in the NFC East is about to dramatically change, in the words of George Walker Bush…

    Big time.

The Redskins aren’t just returning this franchise to respectability and relevance. They’re going to dominate the NFC East for the next decade.
    Give 'em hell, Boone.

Nice job Boone. All of the sports talk guys have pissed me off for one reason or another over the years. I find myself listening more than I probably should because I'm on the road a lot and there are only so many songs on my iPod. Cowherd is one of the worst and just looks for a reaction, facts are optional with him. You can fit what he actually knows about sports in a thimble. Predictions are worth what you pay for them.

Before last season the Pack were a sure bet to repeat by most "expert" analyst. Didn't happen. The all powerful Giants barely made it to the playoffs last season but most forget that little detail (**** the Giants by the way). Who had the 49er two plays away from the Super Bowl before last season? Not Cowherd, not me, not anyone. I seem to remember most of the ESPN crew picking the Boys or Eagles winning the division (just like the year before). How did that work out?

Nobody picks us except Joe Theisman (love ya Joe). One day he'll be right and we'll have the last laugh.

I have never been a Cowherd fan. His objective is to piss people off with his views and comments. Granted it works.

    Anyway, great blog, Boone.

Here's the Vegas Odds article that sparked the Cowherd comments:

    http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-tr...ortsbook-press

To be fair, CC was merely assessing those odds - he didn't create them. The issue I have had less to do with the 6.5 win bar set for the Redskins than the lack of consideration that the Redskins might well be trending upward in the NFC East and be capable of a breakout season in near future.

Boone, in my online travels throughout the league I have noticed an "image" a "mindset" defining the Redskins among NFL fans as well as sports media that has been formed based on the performance of the team, coaching staffs, and F.O. over the past dozen years or so. Every move the Redskins make-free agency, draft, coaching changes, player trades, and the like are viewed from the perspective of this "image". And the image? One of incompetence, free-spending, coaching carousels, overpaid free agents, sloppy drafting, inept front office maneuvers, and this image in the minds of those observing from this perspective, is justified by the Redskins chronic in-season under-achievement. Moves such as acquisitions of players that, from what might be called a more "objective" perspective, are moves that bode well for the future are viewed skeptically based on this entrenched "image" accurate or inaccurate as it may be.

We Redskins fans understandably get riled when a football media "pundit" disses a move we see as putting us on, or closer to, being on the track toward success but I don't think getting this image scoured from their heads is going to happen until the on-the-field performance becomes consistently good over more than one season. It's gonna be painful, but until the Redskins start having 9-7 or better winning seasons, 3 or more division wins, and at least a threat of a Wild Card appearance this lack of respect from the "sports pundits" no matter how uninformed and inaccurate it is will, in my estimation, be something we'll just have to grit our teeth and put up with.

I'm giving it a 2-4 year window. Looking for improvement in all areas. Redskins, you're on the clock.

Great and insightful post serv. You just said in two paragraphs what it took me 1300 or more words to try and convey. I agree.

And for the record, I don't always write what I believe from a personal perspective - sometimes I throw in a little hyperbole, or stake out a position I know represents a segment of the fan viewpoint. As I said, anyone who tries to predict the output of a given season with any certainty, is mining fool's gold. As you so clearly stated, my issue is more with the widely held belief that these are 'the same old Redskins' and we're up to 'business as usual'. Cowherd didn't say any of that - but it's implied as it almost always is.

Regardless, your assessment of what drives that kind of 'herd' mentality is dead on.

Under Gibbs II, from 2004-07, we had 2 playoff appearances in just 4 seasons. Does that not deserve any respect ? Not only from the performance itself, but Snyder's ability to coax Gibbs out of retirement ?

We were the darlings of the NFL during that run after Taylor's death under Gibbs and had we actually gone a little further than Seattle. things might have stayed in the afterglow for a while.

Didn't take us long after Gibbs departure to go back to "normal" so the next time we present something special we'll need to continue the upward trend to be recognized by anyone but our own.
