    B Redskins Re-Sign Tim Hightower

    For Immediate Release
    May 14, 2012

    REDSKINS RE-SIGN TIM HIGHTOWER

ASHBURN, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have re-signed unrestricted free agent running back Tim Hightower. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The team also waived tight end Rob Myers.

Hightower, 25, returns for his fifth NFL season in 2012 and his second with the Redskins after joining the team via trade during the 2011 offseason. Last season, he started all five games in which he appeared, totaling 321 yards on 84 carries with one rushing touchdown. He also added 10 receptions for 78 yards and recorded the first receiving touchdown of his career.

Prior to joining the Redskins, Hightower (6-0, 222) played three seasons for the Arizona Cardinals, the team that originally selected him with a fifth-round (149th overall) pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. In his time with the Cardinals, he rushed 439 times for 1,733 yards (3.9 avg.) with 23 touchdowns. He also had 118 receptions for 801 yards (6.8 avg.) and helped the Cardinals to a Super Bowl berth in his rookie season in 2008.

Hightower played collegiately at Richmond, where he established school career-records for rushing yards (3,617), all-purpose yards (4,448), rushing touchdowns (34) and total touchdowns (39) in 49 career games. In 2007, he earned first-team All-American and unanimous All-Colonial Athletic Association honors as a senior after setting school single-season rushing records for yardage (1,924) and touchdowns (20).

Hightower was born on May 23, 1986. He attended Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va., where he earned All-State honors in both his junior and senior years.

two things bother me about this signing.

    1. Hightower was not the quickest back before the ACL injury.

    2. When a projected starting running back's strongest attribute is his ability to pass block that has me concerned about being productive enough in the run game in critical situations.

BT, we've got Helu & Royster - maybe they signed Hightower as a pass-down back, specifically for pass-protection? Maybe because of his injury they're not going to feed him the rock 25 times a game?

What lanky said plus he is good at catching out of the backfield. He is an NFL quality RB, anyone else that says else wise is a hater. You can say hes not the best, but you cant say hes not quality. If he makes the final cut I wont be upset.

He provides depth, competition, leadership (ask Helu), character and experience. It's a no brainer to take him to camp and let him show what he can do.

Well, it's not like I don't think some of the additions will not help the team, but we seem to be bringing back a lot of guys from a 5-11 team.

So, either the qb position really did mask what otherwise was a competitive team or we are putting a lot of stock in returning players taking things to the next level.
