NFP: Ranking the QB Class by Tiers

Wes Bunting is usually spot on, but I don't agree with him that RG3 is a tier below Luck (and at the same level as Tannehill). Maybe based on the fact that he hasn't reached his potential? Who knows.

Breaking down the tiers of quarterback prospects…

Tier 1

Andrew Luck: Stanford (6-4, 235)
Doesn't have an elite arm, but is a "plus" in just about every other facet of the game. Is about as safe a franchise quarterback prospect you can find.

Tier 2

Robert Griffin III: Baylor (6-2, 220)
A "plus" athlete who can really throw the football, is a student of the game and is only starting to scratch the surface of his potential. Has as much upside as any prospect in the draft and looks like a future franchise signal caller.

Ryan Tannehill: Texas A&M (6-4, 222)
With such limited experience at the quarterback position it's not a case of where this guy is right now, but where he can be in 2/3 years. I love the talent and the overall production from a guy who doesn't have much experience playing from under center as he plays way beyond his years. A potential franchise quarterback in my mind.

Tier 3

Brandon Weeden: Oklahoma State (6-4, 218)
His age will likely keep him from going as early in the draft as his talents deserve. But there isn't a throw this guy can't make and he has the skill set and mental make-up to mature into a potential starter with some time.

Nick Foles: Arizona (6-5, 240)
A big, strong-armed passer who has the tools physically. Made some real strides as a quarterback as a senior without much talent around him. Is going to take some time, but is an potential starting caliber pocket passer.

Kirk Cousins: Michigan State (6-3, 205)
A solid athlete who isn't overly impressive physically, but he has enough to make it in the NFL. Needs to take that next step in his understanding of the offense this year and cut down on the mental errors. However, he's a good kid, a hard worker and has some real similar qualities to some of the senior quarterbacks who came off the board this year (Ponder/Dalton). Nevertheless, his struggles with pressure could hold him back from ever becoming an NFL starter.

Geez LL, haven't you heard? Luck is THE MAN.

No way RGIII should be taken ahead of him.

From your lips to Irsay's ears...

Well, if I can inject a bit more paranoia-inducing stuff in a place already suffering from it....

From IndyStar.com:

Colts owner Jim Irsay: Andrew Luck at No. 1 is no sure thing

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Colts owner Jim Irsay said it's not a foregone conclusion that Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck will be the franchise's first overall pick in next month's draft over Baylor's Robert Griffin III.

"It's up in the air,'' Irsay told USA TODAY. "We have to look at this thing completely open-minded.

"You have two outstanding athletes, two great pure passers, two guys from families that are incredible.''

Irsay said he, general manager Ryan Grigson and coach Chuck Pagano have yet to make a decision, but negotiations could be a factor.

"If we get to the point where we're going to negotiate early, get something done before the draft, you never rule that out,'' Irsay said. "We've talked to both agents. We haven't negotiated yet.''

With the rookie salary wage scale established, they would be silly to do anything ahead of time. There really isn't much incentive anymore to signing a guy ahead of the draft, as injuries can occur anytime, off the field. Most "insiders" believe the Colts will take Luck, which makes the most sense.

Nothing to worry about. :)

Interesting to see Tannehill rated so high. Been saying for a couple of months now that he is going to be a great player in the league. Does he go to the Browns at 4? Dolphins at 8? KC at 11? Arizona at 13? If the Browns were smart (yeah, I know), they would snatch him up and take a player of need with the 22nd pick.

I agree there's nothing to worry about.

Not just because the Colts ARE going to take Luck unless Irsay clonks his head on the curb crawling home from a bar the night before the draft....

But also because if he DID, our "consolation prize" would be a guy almost certain to be the best QB we've had in this burg since Sonny Jurgensen had a flat belly.
