Game Notes: Washington Redskins at New York Giants

• The Redskins snapped a two-game losing streak, defeating the New York Giants on Sunday, 23-10.

• The win was the Redskins’ first against the Giants at New York since Week 15 of the 2007 season.

• The Redskins swept the season series from the Giants for the first time since 1999. The Redskins defeated the Giants, 28-14, in Week 1.

• The win was Head Coach Mike Shanahan’s 157th regular season win as a head coach, pulling him one shy of Pro Football Hall of Famer Bud Grant (158).

• Including the Redskins’ 23-17 win at Seattle in Week 12, the Redskins have now won two straight road games for the first time since winning at Philadelphia and at Chicago in Weeks 4 and 7 of the 2010 season, respectively.

• The Redskins held a 20-point lead following a fourth-quarter field goal that put them ahead, 23-3. Previously, the team’s largest lead this season before Sunday was 17, set in Week 4 when the Redskins lead St. Louis, 17-0. The last time the Redskins held a lead of at least 20 points was at Oakland on Dec. 13, 2009, when the Redskins led by 21 points in the fourth quarter.

• The Redskins intercepted New York quarterback Eli Manning three times, the most interceptions Manning has thrown in 15 career games against Washington.

• The three interceptions were the most secured by the Redskins in a game this season and the most since the Redskins recorded four interceptions at Chicago in Week 7 last season.

• The Redskins held Manning to zero completions in the first quarter (0-for-6). Before Sunday, Manning had never been held without a first-quarter completion in his previous 116 career starts.

• The Giants’ zero completions in the first quarter marked the second time this season the Redskins have held opponents without a first-quarter completion (Week 12 at Seattle).

• Safety Oshiomogho Atogwe recorded his second interception of the season and his first since Week 6 vs. Philadelphia. The interception, which came following a deflection from linebacker London Fletcher, was the 24th of Atogwe’s career.

• Fletcher played in his 222nd consecutive game, which is tied with Tampa Bay’s Ronde Barber for most among active non-specialists. It was also his 177th consecutive start, the most by any active linebacker.

• Cornerback DeAngelo Hall recorded his third interception of the season and 35th interception of his career in the third quarter.

• Cornerback Josh Wilson recorded his second interception of the season and the 11th of his career, picking off Manning in the fourth quarter.

• The pick gives Wilson interceptions in back-to-back games for the first time since Weeks 13-14 of the 2010 season.

• The last time the Redskins had three different players register an interception in a single game was on this day six years ago on Dec. 18, 2005, when Marcus Washington, Cornelius Griffin and Dimitri Patterson all had interceptions in a Week 15 win vs. Dallas.

• Wide receiver Santana Moss caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Rex Grossman in the second quarter. The touchdown is Moss’ 37th as a member of the Redskins, giving him sole possession of seventh place in team history, surpassing Ricky Sanders (36).

• Fullback Darrel Young rushed for a six-yard touchdown in the second quarter. The rushing touchdown was the first of his career, as his only other career touchdown was a three-yard touchdown reception vs. Philadelphia on Nov. 15, 2010.

• Young had 14 rushing yards on a career-high four carries.

• Defensive end Stephen Bowen recorded his sixth sack of the season, dropping Manning on third down in the third quarter, improving upon his single-season career high.

• Linebacker Ryan Kerrigan recorded a fourth-quarter sack, giving him a team-leading 7.5 sacks for his rookie season.

• Linebacker Brian Orakpo added a fourth-quarter sack. Orakpo now has 7.0 sacks for the season and 26.5 sacks for his career.

• Running back Roy Helu finished with 53 yards on 23 carries. Helu became the first Redskins’ running back to rush for 20 or more carries in four consecutive games since Clinton Portis accomplished the feat in Weeks 5-8 of the 2008 season.

• The Redskins had 40 rushing attempts, tying a season-high set at St. Louis in Week 4.

• Rookie tackle Willie Smith received his first career NFL start.

• Wide receiver Anthony Armstrong rushed for 14 yards on a first-quarter reverse, a career long. The only other carry of his career came on Nov. 20 vs. Dallas, when he rushed for five yards.

• Wide receiver Niles Paul received his first career carry, rushing for seven yards on a first-quarter rushing attempt.

• Kicker Graham Gano was 3-for-3 on field goal attemps, setting a new career high for field goals made in a season with 26. His previous high was 24, set last season.

• The Redskins converted a 4th-and-1 opportunity in the first quarter. It was the team’s first fourth-down conversion since Week 6 vs. Philadelphia.

• The Redskins won the turnover battle, 3-2. It is the first time this season the team has had a positive turnover margin and the first time the team has won the turnover battle since Week 16 last year at Jacksonville.

• The Redskins converted 8-of-15 third downs (53 percent), the team’s highest third-down conversion percentage of the season. It was the Redskins’ best third-down percentage since converting 58 percent of third downs vs. New Orleans on Dec. 6, 2009.

• The Redskins won the time of possession battle, 35:00-25:00. The Redskins are now 5-1 when possessing the ball longer than their opponents.

The last bullet point makes me want to scream when I think of Kyle's playcalling early in the season.
