Redskins’ Jarvis Jenkins aches to return

Sounds like this kids head is on right. Now if the knee heals up, we may have a stud waiting to play for us

The pop still echoes through Jarvis Jenkins’ mind. Three months couldn’t quiet the sound that seems as fresh as the bright scar that works its way up his right knee.

Oh, Jenkins tries to forget the noise that exploded from his knee that August night in Baltimore. He wants to rid himself of the memory of his 310 pounds crumpling to the turf at M&T Bank Stadium, the pop screaming that his anterior cruciate ligament was torn, his meniscus damaged and his rookie year with the Washington Redskins over before it reached the regular season.

He is the reason that Bowers from Clemson was considered the number one overall pick until he got hurt. Jenkins got double teamed every play and let Bowers get all the sacks.

This guy is going to be a beast when he returns!!!

I know all about knee reconstructions. I've had four on one knee! I wasn't an NFL rookie, or even a top ranked Aussie Rules player when I first did mine in 1980, just a junior entering his last year of underage football.

Because of who I was, it was 5 months before I got to see an orthopedic specialist, then he botched the reco, and it was another 11 months before I got to see another specialist to re-assess the damage. Anyway, 4 reconstructions over a 5 year period pretty much signalled the end of any sporting ambitions I had, and am now waiting to reach that 'eligible' age for a knee replacement.

In the meantime, as I have favoured my knee for all these years, my hip has gone to crap, my spine is all out of whack, I weigh over 300+ lbs and have spent the majority of my working life on a disability.

At least Jarvis has a future with all the right medical people on his side. Me, I was left to deal with it all on my own. Also, the real kicker was that as I did the injury before the season had actually started, my club didn't want to pay the insurance that I was covered under.

Damn. Missed this somehow when it was first posted. I love this kid, what a great read. Can't wait to see him in action next year, how great is it that he sits in on the defensive meetings instead of rehabbing in SC? Awesome!

Lot of pressure on this kid. The promise he flashed has unfortunately elevated his perceived ability into almost mythical proportions. If he doesn't pick up where he left off, and then ascend almost immediately, he'll become a legend of what could have been.

Lord knows we're all pulling for him to be a stand out player. But we need to remember, he's just a rookie who showed promise in the preseason, who blew out his knee before we could see what he could do against the big boys when it means something.

Good luck young man.

Good point Ax. What encourages me the most is the mental stuff, not the physical rehab. IF he can get his physical skillset back, combined with the mental preparation he apparently has embraced, he could be really good. Alternatively, even if the physical skills don't return all the way, hopefully this new mental concentration will help compensate some.

Agreed. I just expect too many people to pencil him in as pro bowl starter next year, based on his projected worth. He needs to be allowed the slack of an unknown rookie.

The Redskins need Jenkins' size and athleticism. Bowen is a 100% effort guy but tends to get swallowed up in the run game against the better tackles he faces.

As I recall Bowen was used mostly on passing downs by the Cowboys.

A return to that type of rotation could be the answer for the Skins up front.

One good note about Jarvis and his knee injury...

He had no structural/cartilage damage and will 100% in a few weeks. That is very important for his future. He is going to a beast for many years.

The ACL is structural. Unless you have done one, you will not know how unstable your knee becomes until the ACL is repaired and fully functional again.
