Game Notes: Washington Redskins vs. San Francisco 49ers

• Attendance for the game was 78,032. The game was the Redskins’ 364th consecutive sellout, including preseason, regular season and playoffs. All 144 regular season, postseason and preseason games at FedExField have been sellouts.

• Rookie RB Roy Helu received his first NFL start and broke the Redskins’ record for most receptions in a game, finishing with 14 receptions for 105 yards. The previous record for receptions was 13, reached twice by Art Monk (1985 and 1990) and once by Kelvin Bryant (1986).

• Helu’s 14 receptions are the most by an NFL running back this season and are the most by a running back since Philadelphia’s Brian Westbrook caught 14 passes against Dallas on Nov. 4, 2007.

• Helu’s 14 receptions are the most by any NFL rookie this season.

• Helu is the first member of the Redskins to catch 10 passes in a game since Santana Moss caught 10 vs. Houston on Sept. 19, 2010.

• Helu’s 105 receiving yards account for the 18th time a Redskins running back has reached the 100-yard mark in a single game. The last Redskins’ running back to reach 100 receiving yards was Stephen Davis at Oakland on Nov. 29, 1998, 203 regular season games ago.

• Helu is the seventh running back this season to reach the century mark in single-game receiving yards.

• Helu is the first player to lead the Redskins in both rushing yards (41) and receiving yards (105) since Rock Cartwright posted 67 rushing yards and 73 receiving yards at Dallas on Nov. 22, 2009.

• Helu’s 105 receiving yards are the most by a rookie running back since Detroit’s Jahvid Best had 154 receiving yards against Philadelphia last season.

• Helu’s previous high for receptions was three, accomplished twice, most recently against Buffalo in Toronto on Oct. 30.

• The game marked the fifth time a Redskins running back has reached double-digit receptions in a single game. Helu is the first back to post at least 10 receptions in a game since Ricky Ervins accomplished the feat on Nov. 15, 1992 at Kansas City.

• K Graham Gano’s 59-yard field goal to end the first half set a Redskins’ record and a career long. The team record had previously been held by Steve Cox, who hit a 57-yard field goal vs. Seattle on Aug. 28, 1986.

• Gano became the 14th different player in NFL history to convert on a field goal attempt of 59 yards or more, according to STATS, INC.

• P Sav Rocca had one punt downed inside the 20-yard line, giving him 17 for the season. He is tied with Miami’s Brandon Fields for the NFL lead in punts downed inside the 20.

• LB London Fletcher played in his 216th consecutive game, which is tied with Tampa Bay CB Ronde Barber for the most amongst active players. He started his 171st consecutive game, the most among active linebackers.

• The start was the 200th of Fletcher’s career, according to STATS, INC.

• LB Brian Orakpo posted his 25th career sack, dropping 49ers QB Alex Smith in the third quarter.

• Orakpo is now the ninth player to record 25 sacks as a member of the Redskins.

• Orakpo leads the Redskins with 5.5 sacks this season.

• S LaRon Landry recovered the fifth fumble of his career and his first of the season in the fourth quarter.

• The fumble was forced by CB DeAngelo Hall, the sixth forced fumble of Hall’s career and his first since Dec. 12, 2010 vs. Tampa Bay.

• Hall recorded 12 tackles, pushing him past 500 for his career, according to STATS, INC.

• QB John Beck passed for more than 200 yards in the third consecutive game. Beck recorded career highs in passing attempts (47) and completions (30).

• FB Darrel Young’s 12-yard reception in the first quarter was the longest of his career.

• WR Niles Paul had his second career kickoff return, returning a kick a career-long 15 yards in the second quarter.

• Rookie WR Leonard Hankerson received his first NFL start. Hankerson finished with four receptions for 34 yards, both career highs.

• Rookie G Maurice Hurt played in his first NFL game, starting at left guard.

• The Redskins held the 49ers to 188 yards passing, the second time this season in which the Redskins have held an opponent under 200 yards passing (Week 4 at St. Louis).

• The Redskins held the 49ers scoreless on San Francisco’s first drive. Entering the game, the Redskins were allowing 0.86 points per drive on opponents’ opening possessions, tied for the third-lowest total in the league.

4 for 34 for Hank isn't bad, especially considering Beck's refusal to throw more than 12 yards down field.

I saw headlines from the media like 'Redskins Fall Flat' and 'Redskins Fail Against 49ers'.

But the truth is this team is simply not talented and experienced enough at critical positions to beat teams that don't beat themselves.

The Redskins were able to beat the Giants and Cardinals by getting key turnovers that leveled the playing field, so to speak.

And Grossman is probably that 5-10% better as a passer when he is 'on' than Beck and that made the difference.

But the Redskins' problems are not readily solvable during the regular season. You can't address qb and the ol adequately until the offseason.

Shanahan is now making the correct decision with the team under .500 and heading to a last place finish in the NFC East to go with the younger players with a future like Helu, Hankerson, and seeing what guys like Hurt can do up front.

It's not pretty football watching rookies and free agents get experience.

But then again watching the 'veterans' the first 6-7 games of the year weren't exactly pretty either.

I don't blame Shanahan for concentrating the draft picks on defense as that unit was #31 overall last year.

But not going after a Matt Hasselbeck or other veteran for a 1-2 year bridge until a franchise qb could be groomed was a mistake that is really costing this team.

The development of everyone on offense is being retarded by the black hole at the qb position.

The fact Shanahan staked his 'reputation' on Grossman and Beck only makes this franchise look like a laughingstock from the outside.

Some positives - the young guns...

Roy Helu gained a lot of valuable experience today and came up big. He will be a major receiving threat out of the backfield for many years.

Leonard Hankerson will only get better and should have a huge impact for many years as well.

Maurice Hurt did a great job in this game and he may have found a home at LG. At the very least, he may provide some quality depth for many years to come.

Ryan Kerrigan is going to a force for many seasons in DC. What a great first round pick.

Jarvis Jenkins had no structural damage to his knee and his rehab is going extremely well. He is going to be a beast.

This draft class is shaping up as one that will have a huge impact far into the future.

Other positives...

We have a punter who is a keeper. Sav needs to be signed to a long contract asap.

It's great to have a kicker too. Glad to see that the coaching staff kept him around - even when things were a bit shaky.

Brian Orakpo - he's just amazing.

All of the above are positives to build on in the future. Yes, I hate losing as much as anyone. However, you can't ignore some of the positives and I remain encouraged as what we see. Patience is still the buzzword and I believe that more than ever after today's game.

This is the sole reason they need to put Gross Man back in. We're not going anywhere with either QB, but if he wants to evaluate the kids, they need someone at the QB position that will preform somewhat adaquately. Beck is beyond stinking it up, and he'll be selling cars this time next year.

At least he better be. If the Shanny's bring him back even as a third stringer, we've got bigger problems than we think

too funny! I had the same thought about both QBs this evening.
