Out of our depth

It seems the Redskins problem is very simple. We're out of our depth. Some of it we knew going in. We had two back up qbs and no starters. That's bad depth. We kept 0 reserve guards. That's bad depth. The playcalling...? 'nuff said.

We knew coming in that we were a thin team. We had a very nice draft. Jenkins and Kerrigan were great pick ups. Helu seems to be a contributer. In preseason, Gomes, and Paul had a knack for making plays and Hankerson seemed to have a knack for getting open.

However, on the offensive line and at qb, we were going short handed and we knew that. We were hoping that no one would get hurt and everyone would outperform their history. Worse, we decided to keep a 36 year old FB/TE who can't stay healthy or sniff the field and a perenial old vet disappointment at WR who isn't contributing.

I know I'm not the only one who when looking at our roster after preseason thought that we were going to grab some guys off the waiver wire. The balance and depth of this team was never right. Too many receivers, not enough line, not enough db esp. with the injury/suspension problems we were dealing with at corner and safety.

At this point in the season, these problems probably can't be resolved... fixed, but they were so forseeable. In fact, many of us did forsee it. I think some were blinded by the fixation on QB, but the real problem is that we were and chose to be out of our depth.

Don't be surprised in Miami are only one game behind us after their next two games. Next week they play KC, then us. That would then leave Indi as the only winless team thus far.

I've had another look at what's left of our schedule, and other than the Seattle game, we'll be lucky to get into double figures, if we do actually score. It's going to be a really painful second half to the season, but as they say, no pain, no gain.

With all the pain over last 20 years we need morphine to withstand any more, if the gain doesn't come along soon.

the thing is, after the switch we expected to be bad on defence especially after last years debacle, it has taken a lot of the flack away from the Offence, you know, the whole reason we signed shanny in the first place? bravo to him, we went from decent to horrific to below average, and below average but with sacks seems to have lifted a lot of the crticism he should be taking for taking a bad offence and not only not improving it but wasting resources.

We have no quarterback because Shanahan decided to take a short cut and trade for a 33 year old McNabb rather than doing the hard work of drafting and developing a player like Colt McCoy.

I am beginning to become convinced this type of move is characteristic of an older coach that doesn't want to take a full 2-3 years to start winning.

That's why you see guys like Jimmy Johnson and George Seifert fail when they leave the teams they made their reputations with.

It's also what makes guys like Bellichick and Dick Vermeil unusual as they amassed draft picks and never gave up on adding younger talent.

Regardless of the outcome of this season the Skins should be in a great position to get a top notch prospect for qb in the next draft. It would be really nice if Trent Williams can find a way to stay healthy and at the very least solidify his spot on the Oline.

Shanahan's rep is that he goes after linemen for specific characteristics in re size and athleticism, but on the current line guys like Brown and Montgomery and Lichtensteiger don't look like great athletes merely mediocre performers.
