Default It's past time to be a good team...

It's been twenty years. I don't want to hear about rebuilding, interceptions, or Rex. All of that is true, but it's past time that this team became good. How often have we been the team to receive the desperate team about to fall off the map only to give them a hand up? Call them the Giant's, or the Eagles, or any of ten other teams... Why do we always give a first year quarterback his first win?

It's ridiculous. Somehow, we have to take that desperate team and make them a loser. Somehow, we have to be a good team that wins the games that we're supposed to. Yesterday, was a game for the taking. When the D woke up in the second half, the Eagles could do almost NOTHING. We give them four easy interceptions and only lose by a touchdown? That was a team ready to lose!

Worse, we had two weeks to figure out how to exploit this team. Two weeks to see how everyone else beat them and almost everyone else had beat them.

Now, you can say there are conspiracies... that catch was insane, in fact both of those sky high volleyball bounces that wound up being receptions for the Eagle's shouldn't happen. Vick should have been called for a safety and instead got a free first down out of it.

But the truth is, we let a bad team beat us because we refuse to be a good team. And yes, we don't have every piece of the puzzle, but who does? Gaffney had more drops yesterday than he probably had all year. Grossman appeared to be on the Eagle's payroll. Why are we the only team who couldn't run on the Eagles. I'm sure they've stacked the box before?

Maybe it requires an exorcism or some hypnotherapy to chase away these demons that force us to choke every time we have a chance to be good, but it is intolerable and our players ought to be both ashamed and angry.

The Defense ought to be mad at their first half performance. The Offense should be infuriated at their continual ineptitude. They're better than that. They better be.

I don't require us to be perfect or even great, but it is past time to be good and to play at a consistant level. We should not have these games in these moments. We shouldn't be the guy who gets everyone else going.

When the occassion arises we shouldn't always shoot ourselves in the foot. That has to stop. If we get beat... fine. But it is past time that we stop beating ourselves and acting like fools.

I can handle losing. It's the beating ourselves that must stop. We came into the game one of the least penalized teams in the league. In the first quarter on the first 7 plays, we picked up four penalties and gave the Eagles 3 free first downs and took ourself out of field goal position. That's not being beaten by a talented team. That's falling apart. So, are the interceptions. They were not great plays by a defense. They were really bad plays by us. Simple give aways. The plays of a bad team.

We need to stop shooting ourselves in the foot. If we're beaten that's okay. We handed this game to them and then got on our knees and begged them to take it.

My problem is something that I've been saying for a while, and something BT mentioned in another thread. These mistakes are what you could expect if we were starting all the youngin's. They make mistakes that cost you games and you live with it. It sucks, but it's part of the learning curve. But we aren't playing the young receivers, which confuzzles me. I mean, it's not like they're gonna drop more catches, is it? Hell, Beck threw it to Austin and look what happened.

More playing time for the kids!

Yeah, there were so many plays out there that we refused to make whether because of an underthrow/poor throw, a drop, or something else. We practically willed the Eagles' to victory.

Burgold, I'm impressed that you still have so much passion for the team that you feel the way you do.

After 20 years of this, I'm fresh out.

I call it "Redskins Fatigue". I know Mike likes to dog people that aren't homers or 100% behind the team, but the fact is that like Burgold said, we've been this way for 20 years.......................a whole generation.

I do like the way we are headed, and it's the first time I've felt that way since Lord Farquaad took over. But we have a long way to go yet.

I know everyone got caught up in the hype of the fast start, but the fact is we're going no where with either Grossman or Beck. We don't have any decent backups on the O-Line BECAUSE WE'VE REFUSED TO DRAFT OLINEMEN for oh................the past 10 years. We need receivers.

LIke I said, I like the way we're going, but we're not there yet

we dont have any decent starters on the Oline sarge, let alone backups, our best Olineman plays out of position at LT, our receivers are terrible, they would all be 4-5 guys on other teams except for moss who would be the best #2 guy in the league.

I hate when we do stupid things , It bugs me when we play old guys when there is no point, I hate even more that we have bumblers calling plays.

Forget Grossman. We don't have a long-term agreement in place with him. He can be gone in 11 weeks.

What worries me is that players like Trent Williams and Jammal Brown who we have signed to new deals for big dollars do not appear to be coming along with steady improvement.

Williams is far too inconsistent at left tackle and Brown looks slow off the ball at age 31.

Those are your building blocks on offense?

Where are the younger receivers? This team is scoring 13 points after only 17 against the Rams and we still need to give all the game reps to Gaffney and Stallworth?

These guys are 30 plus years old and have no upside. For a rebuilding team like the Redskins we need to use 2011 to identify and develop the youngsters that are going to be part of the equation here.

Gaffney has dropped balls. Stallworth has dropped balls.

Let's not pretend the current group has been setting the world on fire.

We keep talking about the receivers not getting open, but defensive coordinators have figured Kyle Shanahan out. I mean, we as slightly more than casual fans have figured things out. Kyle abandons the run entirely too early in the game and gives the opposing team the chance to get ahead or in the case of Dallas, allow them to take the lead late in the game because we aren't burning time off the clock.

If we get the run game going, the receivers have more room to get open, old or young!

The one thing that helps a bad team or rebuilding team keep it close is a franchise qb.

Look at the team we are playing this week.

But the reason Washington has not been 'good' for the past 10 years is we have never outgunned anyone at the qb position.

And what we saw from Grossman yesterday takes one back to Shane Matthews and Danny Wuerffel under Spurrier.

1999. Johnson had legit pro bowl numbers and we won the division.

    Coincidence?

Ugh. Don't remind me. My wife's only jersey is Brad Johnson. She loved rooting for him, and was so mad at Danny when he went after Jeff George. What a disaster.

She was laughing so hard at Danny when Brad won the Super Bowl. Ass-clown.

I hesitate to say this because I know a lot of you guys are going to go nuts on me but even in the midst of rebuilding, we are really only one player away from being truly relevant in the NFC. Sadly that position is QB and it would take a guy who ranked in the Top 3rd of the NFL for it to happen.

Our receivers do not currently look like world beaters but then whose do until they have an above average QB throwing to them? For years Manning has made guys with no more talent then our group dangerous. Same for Brees. Brady has turned guys drafted low or not at all into a pretty good group. Fitz is throwing to 6th and 7th rounders in Buffalo.

A great QB with a quick, accurate release can make up for an average line too. Again, just look at what Manning has done in Indy for years.

And a solid passing game would make the current running game in Washington work great.

Sure, there would still be some drops by the receivers, some sacks taken and a RB stuffed from time to time.

But guys were running open in the Eagles secondary, a very talented Eagles secondary, yesterday and were flat missed. Granted, hitting them is no guarantee they catch the ball but if the ball doesn't at least get within arms reach even the best receiver in football is useless.

It is also possible that just slightly better throws on some of those drops result in catches and slightly better thrown balls on receptions result in more yards after the catch.

Could this offense use better players at nearly every position? Sure. But a serious upgrade at just the one position would make this team relevant NOW.

Basically, and he was passed over in favor of a guy who couldn't think his way out of a paper bag.

Neo, I think you're right, don't disagree with any of that. How do we get this guy? It seems like other teams get breaks that we just don't get, at least as it pertains to the QB position. When you start going back through the list of QBs we have had, not just recently either, stretching way back, it's mind blowing how few guys we have had who were real difference makers at that position.

I agree with Neo also - so many times during the games I'm saying to myself "if only we had a quarterback..."

For the last decade or so, we've had no scouting department to find these guys, since Lord Farquaad fired almost all of them in the early 2000's. Last year was the first draft we've had in a decade that had input from a competant scouting staff.

We have had a top 10 pick or picks in 1999, 2000,2004,2005,2007,2010 and 2011.

How many of these selections were for quarterbacks?

Out of all the free agent dollars Dan Snyder spent in the 2000's, how many legitimate NFL passers were among that group that set records for signing bonus dollars at a couple of positions?

When you ask yourself these questions, you realize the Redskins in the era of the franchise quarterback have gone out and acquired everything else.

that's cuz they *issed away so many of their picks in trades. they had one shot drafts and little negotiating tender.
