Solid Offensive Line Play Leads Redskins To Second Straight Win; Washington in Contention for 2011 Madden Protectors Award Presented By Prilosec OTC®

CINCINNATI, OH (September 21, 2011) – Aided by powerful pass protection and dependable run blocking, the WASHINGTON REDSKINS overcame an eight point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Arizona Cardinals 22-21. The Redskins offensive line now joins an emerging list of contenders for the 3rd annual Madden Protectors Award, presented by Prilosec OTC. This award honors the NFL’s best offensive line and will be presented during the week of Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis. Past Madden Protectors Award recipients include the NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (2010) and the NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (2009)

The Madden Protectors Award recognizes the fundamental role offensive linemen play in their teams’ success by providing consistent and powerful protection day in and day out, just as Prilosec OTC can provide 24-hour frequent heartburn protection when used as directed for 14 days. For more information on the Madden Protectors Award presented by Prilosec OTC, visit www.nfl.com/prilosecotc.

With the victory, the Washington Redskins, amassed a total of 455 yards on Sunday, and certainly opened a few eyes in the NFC East with their inspired 2-0 start. The Redskins offensive line was solid throughout the game Sunday, allowing only 1 sack and providing quarterback REX GROSSMAN (Florida) the protection to complete 25 of 43 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, running backs TIM HIGHTOWER (Richmond) and RAY HELU (Nebraska) combined for a total 170 yards. The Redskins rank among the Top-5 in yards per carry and among the Top-10 in passing yards per game.

After trailing the Arizona Cardinals by eight points with less than 11 minutes to play in the fourth quarter, Rex Grossman led the Redskins on a five and a half minute scoring drive converting three third downs and one fourth down along the way. On 4th and 3 Grossman converted with SANTANA MOSS (Miami, FL) for an 18-yard touchdown with 5:18 to play. After a failed two-point conversion and still trailing by two points, GRAHAM GANO (Florida State) was able to seal the victory with a 34-yard field goal with only 1:45 minutes to play. Starting in the trenches on Sunday for the Redskins were tackles JAMMAL BROWN (Oklahoma) and TRENT WILLIAMS (Oklahoma); guards CHRIS CHESTER (Oklahoma) and KORY LICHTENSTEIGER (Bowling Green); and center WILL MONTGOMEREY (Virginia Tech). In his second season with the Redskins, CHRIS FOERSTER serves as the Offensive Line coach.

“Washington’s Offensive Line did a great job protecting Rex Grossman and setting up a balanced offensive attack”, said Pro Football Hall of Fame Coach JOHN MADDEN.

Other NFL Offensive Lines delivering powerful protection during Week 2 included the Week 1 Madden Protectors Award recipient BUFFALO BILLS (481 total net yards including 264 yards passing and 217 rushing yards and no sacks allowed); NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (517 total net yards, including 423 passing yards and 94 rushing yards); PITTSBURGH STEELERS (437 yards of total offense including 313 passing yards and 124 rushing yards); and the DETRIOT LIONS (411 yards of total offense including 322 passing yards and no sacks allowed).

I miss Madden honestly. The guy became a bunch of catch phrases but he knew football. and to have him replaced by Colinsworth was insulting at best to me.

Collinsworth is a bag of douche. Madden was great entertainment.

I seriously don't see why Theisman gets the bad rap he does. Kenny Albert & Theisman are one of my fav TV matchups.

Cris Collinsworth is the worst front runner in the national media.

He gets on and off the bandwagon of teams as often as most people change clothes.

Between he and Gruden, I don't know who is worse. I will say that Gruden is great with the X's and O's, but he is a on and off bandwagon type so bad he does it in the same quarter of a game.

Poor Al Michaels gets lost in the Collinsowrthless mess too. Al Michaels has quietly become one of the very best over his career only to have Collinsworthless bring him down as his career winds down. I really hope NBC sees things the same and gives Al someone different before he retires.

Oh and has anyone heard Marv Albert is doing football again on CBS? I want to see how he does at 70. He was one of the better ones, even if he was a freak!

Redskins OL has a lot to prove.

No Tuck or Umenyiora in Week 1 but the tackles struggled.

Last week the Redskins were playing a defense like their own from 2010, moving to the 3-4 with inaequate personnel.

I'm particularly keying in on Trent Williams on Monday. He's going to have his hands full with Ware. It's a statement game for the Redskins franchise - it's a lot to ask for this team to walk into Dallas and maintain a perfect win-loss record. However, at the end of the day, we have to ask if we want to begin flexing our muscles within the NFC East, or if we simply want to be another of the many 2-1 teams. 3-0 in the standings and 2-0 in the division would be a big a huge indicator to me that the team is not prepared to be pushed around anymore. It's much the same for Williams on Monday. Does he want to be regarded as just another guy at tackle, or start making his case for being a higher tier player? These kinds of statement games go a long way towards determining that.

Couldn't agree more, CH. The Cowboys are hurting, big time. In the past, just like the Arizona game, this is a game we should win, but in reality, we only have a 50/50 shot at things because we would play down to the competition. If we lost, we would write it off as an acceptable loss somehow because it was a rivalry game, and yeah it sucks to lose to the Cowboys, but it doesn't say anything grand about the team.

This is a game we should win. Period. They are hurting and down and we need to step on their necks and finish them. They could be without their starting RB, two starting WRs, and starting QB. And if any of the above players play, they will be at less than 100%. We need this game.

I found something interesting about the Redskins OL from, of all places, an insurance company's website.

New York Life has an interesting PR gimmick on their site called the "New York Life Protection Index" which is a grading system for NFL offensive lines in regard to pass protection. It's a proprietary algorithm but they do mention the factors that go into calculating it.

The New York Life Protection Index is the authoritative measure of a team’s aptitude in pass protection. In today’s football, the 'golden age’ of passing, a pro football team’s ability to protect the quarterback is a key attribute to winning games. The New York Life Protection Index was created by sports information leader STATS to provide a composite gauge for this undervalued component of the game. While the New York Life Protection Index is calculated using a proprietary formula, the fundamentals are comprised of the length of a team’s pass attempts combined with penalties by offensive linemen, sacks allowed and quarterback hurries and knockdowns. The New York Life Protection Index is updated weekly throughout the regular season
.

Here's the current standings according to their calculations.
