Evolution of a defense

The Washington Redskins defense has all the potential in the world. With no less than six first round picks in Andre Carter, Albert Haynesworth, Carlos Rogers, DeAngelo Hall, Brian Orakpo, and LaRon Landry, the defense is rich in talent.

Now, its just a matter of learning to play with one another.

I know this team is going to be a good defense, said Haynesworth. You got a lot of names. You got a lot of talent. All weve got to do is just gel, and well be a good defense.

There is a way to go before the unit becomes top tier. The first step is learning to play together, to become greater than the sum of the parts. This is already beginning to occur, if Saturday night was any indication.

The first team defense against Pittsburgh showed that it is going to bring pressure on the quarterback. Haynesworth was getting good penetration, and both Carter and Orakpo getting around the edge. This is something the Redskins have not done consistently since Darrel Gardner and LaVar Arrington were on the team.

Every week its a level of progression, said defensive end Andre Carter. We have a lot of talent but with talent comes hard work, and everybody knows that. Were never content on just being dominant, we want to be great, outstanding, and excel on a high level far beyond everything we have ever imagined.
