Burner's Burning Questions: Off-season, Free Agency, Post-Draft Edition

Greetings to one and all. Welcome to the off-season edition of BBQ. We will talk a bit about free agency and the 2011 draft as well. Let’s get to the questions.

1. First and foremost – will there be football in 2011?

The BBQ answer is a difficult one, but I believe we will. If a deal is forthcoming by July 4 (some owners see this as a key date), then we will probably see two games eliminated from the preseason schedule. Too, look for a roster expansion (most likely for one year only) to anywhere from fifty-eight to sixty-two players. Practice squad numbers will remain the same. There will be a period of time for free agency as well.

2. What if there is no football in 2011? How would it affect the draft in 2012?

If there is no football in 2011, you can be assured that the NCAA will flex many marquis games to Sundays and Monday nights.

There will be a draft in 2012 – even if there is no football in 2011. The NFL could go with how teams finished in 2010 again. The Redskins would have the tenth or eleventh pick in rounds one through seven and the sixteenth pick in the fourth round (via Oakland). The more likely scenario is taking the “NHL approach” and average area of selection in the three previous drafts (with some extra weight being given to the 2010 season). If that scenario happens, the Redskins would pick around eighth and ninth in each round. In the fourth round, the Oakland selection would come in somewhere around the eleventh pick.

3. How would you grade the 2011 draft for the Redskins (each player)? Try not to be a homer.

Ryan Kerrigan – Great pick at this selection and fills a huge need.

Jarvis Jenkins – Another great pick that fills a huge need on the defensive line.

Leonard Hankerson – One of the biggest steals of the 2011 draft. He will start sooner rather than later.

Roy Helu – Good selection in the fourth. He could start and could see a lot of playing time.

DeJon Gomes – This player will work his way into nickel and dime rotations. He has a knack for getting turnovers. Not a starter, but look for him to be a key contributor.

Niles Paul – Don’t be surprised to see him become the fourth receiver before the end of the season. He could be the steal of the fourth and fifth rounds. He has DeSean Jackson-type skills, but in a much bigger and more durable body.

Evan Royster – I spoke to a Penn. St. alum about Royster recently. If you want six or seven yards, he can get it. If you need a short yardage back, this is your player. On occasion, he can burst through for a twelve or fifteen yard gain. He will be a very dependable back, but not a home run threat like Helu.

Aldrick Robinson – He will need two or three years to develop, but could become a starter in the receiving corps by then. Look for him to challenge for return duties – in fact, he has a good chance of being a key contributor at this position right away.

Brandyn Thompson – With an expanded roster, he could make the team. He would probably be inactive for many games. Look for him to be on the practice squad.

Maurice Hurt – Look for this Florida product to be cut or a practice squad member.

Markus White – Don’t be surprised if he is on the roster come opening day. His medical issues are of no real concern. Without those concerns, his production in college warranted a third round grade. A nice steal here in the seventh round.

Chris Neild – He has a lot of heart and his motor never stops. It will take time, but he will work into the rotation at some point.

Overall, the BBQ gives the grade of A-. Not addressing the offensive line is bothersome.

4. What will become of the UDFAs for 2011?

When (and if) an agreement is reached in the next few weeks (as expected), teams will be free to pursue UDFAs at that time. If there is no agreement forthcoming anytime soon, look for the NFL to allow a short period of time to sign these players. The Redskins will probably target offensive line, linebackers, a kicker, a punter, a quarterback, defensive line, and cornerbacks.

5. The same question for FAs in 2011.

There will be no FA in 2011 if there is no football season. FA will commence once an agreement is signed. The BBQ sees the following for the Redskins in FA

Rex Grossman – QB. He will return.
FA QB will be added.
Santana Moss - He will be back.
Ryan Harris – Look for him to be on the roster.
Jammal Brown – He will probably return.
Cullen Jenkins – He will be in a Redskins uniform.
Aubrayo Franklin – He will probably be signed.
A cornerback will be signed.
A punter will be signed.
Rocky McIntosh – Has shown a lot of heart by attending player workouts and could return.

6. Will there be a supplemental draft?

Yes, if there are any players who declare sometime soon.

That’s all for now. Let’s hope we have football in 2011. We have missed things like FA, UDFA, OTAs, mini camps, trades, and everything that makes us dedicated fans.

nice post BB!

to be frank...I've turned my attention elsewhere since the draft. until the rich guys work out a deal.....not much to speculate on. though I must confess I am interested in the constant "we have a plan for FA" that Allen/Shanahan mention when cornered. It would be nice to find a better CB to replace Rogers... :) .....
