    Helmet Grade Round 1

How do you grade the Redskins decision to trade their 10th round pick to the Jags in exchange for the 16th and 49th pick, and their selection of Purdue DE Ryan Kerrigan?

I'm giving it a B+. Getting an extra second rounder is brilliant and this will really help to fill some voids at various positions.

Ryan Kerrigan is a great choice at 16 and provides solid value. Hate to sound like a broken record, but choosing Cameron Jordan at 16 would've been better imho. I really believe he is going to be an explosive player in this league and is the perfect DE in a 3-4 defense.

I can't argue too much with the Kerrigan pick though. He provides a solid bookend for Brian Orapko and this duo could be a dominant twosome for many years to come.

I agree completely. I would have gone Jordan too but with so many more D lineman in this draft maybe we get one at 41.

    The extra second is awesome!

A - Based on the assumption that we acquired a starter at a position of desperate need, and picked up another high selection to boot.

I gave it a B+. Getting the extra second rounder was an excellent move, especially in the light of so many good players sliding down from where they were expected to be drafted. This, to me, makes the second round-and, in fact all the lower rounds upgraded in term of the available talent pool.

I'm giving it a 2-4 year window. Looking for improvement in all areas. Redskins, you're on the clock.

At first, I was afraid, I was petrifie... ahem. I mean, I was confused last night, and didn't like the move very much, frankly. But after getting up this morning and reading up on this kid, I love the move. We traded down, got a an extra second which is brilliant. And more importantly, I really like this kid.

I like the fact that all the reports I read on this kid mention his high motor, strong effort, never takes a play off, etc. That is the kind of message we need to send to the lockeroom and to the NFL in general. Fat Al is not an option for the Redskins anymore, nor are players of his ilk. This kid is the antithesis of Fat Al and I hope it ignites the defense.

Agreed. Fits in perfectly with the high motor guys like London Fletcher and Orakpo.

I went with A-. Like others would thought Jordan would be a great pick here, but guess Haslett will move Alexander back to DE and plug Kerrigan opposite Orakpo. We still need a wide body at NT.

I like Kerrigan, but the move to gain another 2nd round pick pushed the grade up. Glad we didn't pull a MN or Vinny and reach for someone.

    Love this tweet by Lorenzo:

Ill play where they need me.RT @banks211: @onemangang97..how u feel about playing next to @LFletcher59 inside?

This is the kind of attitude in the lockeroom that Kerrigan will walk in to! Love it!

A-, Love the trade down, was hoping for Jordon, but Kerrigan could be the perfect selection based on attitude and ability. With the extra second rounder, I'd like to see us take the kid out of Oregon State, Stephen Paea. I believe he could solve our NT problem for the long term.

I went A- as well, largely due to what we didn't do, rather than what we did.

We did NOT reach on a possible QB of the future.
We did NOT trade UP on a possible QB of the future.
    We did NOT go flashy.

The trade down to pick up the additional pick in the 2nd made me giddy with joy. I admit I was hoping they jumped on Phil Taylor at #16 to plug that middle up and start building from the center out for a change but after all I have read about Kerrigan, I think we got a good kid that I will be proud to see in a Skins uni for years to come.

Without knowing anything about the guy we drafted except for the position he plays (I don't follow college football, sorry) I give this move an A-.

Trading down and filling holes is exactly what I was hoping we'd do. I think we have more pressing needs than LB which is why I didn't give the move a solid A but I do agree with the apparent draft strategy to this point.

I gave it an A-. Trading down netted us an extra pick in the 2nd round. We drafted a lineman (although he is slated to play OLB), an area the Redskins frequently neglect. He's a non-flashy, high motor guy. They didn't put all their eggs in one basket an risk it on a QB that isn't a sure thing (especially without the line up front to protect him).

    B to B+.....

    - good character guy
    - good resume
    - has size for run game
    - has a quick first step
    - good value picking up a second round pick that was subsequently leveraged

    - unknown pass coverage skills
    - unknown how many pass rush moves he really has
    - unknown how well he can transition to OLB from DE
    - unknown how well/quickly he can read & react
    - unknown opportunity cost: what they could have drafted with that 10th pick
    - whole draft symbolizes how badly Shanahan/Allen mishandled things last year when some of us (ahemm) were screaming "blow it up...rebuild the whole dang thing"

    B+

Addressed the OLB spot opposite of Orakpo with a blue collar, hard working kid that loves football. Not splashy but a solid contributor. Gaining the 2nd round pick really makes this move stand out.

Only concern is whether Kerrigan can become a true 3-4 OLB or will he struggle like Andre Carter? Either way there will be a learning curve and with a lockout, I think Kerrigan will struggle a bit as a week 1 starter (which most likely he'll be).
