Default U.S. army forced to issue an apology over 'trophy' photos

These guys should be executed in the field

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...an-corpse.html

The U.S. Army has been forced to apologise over what they have deemed as 'repugnant' photographs of grinning American soldiers standing over bloodied and partially-naked Afghan bodies they had allegedly killed.

Nope, but from reading the article these guys were just picking civilians out and offing them. No room for that crap.

If the photos are as described this goes way beyond 'war is bad and mistakes happen.' I'd like to see the photos before making that judgement, but this has the potential to be very damaging for us. Obama really needs to step up to the plate to diffuse this.

Just like he should step up and not permit someone like Bradley Manning to be even remotely considered a hero when he should be considered for the death penalty for treason. Obama needs to come out and call Manning a traitor so his minions will not picket in Quantico to free their hero.

I am not trying to minimize what these soldiers may have done. I just find it hypocritical to want to penalize these soldiers for what they did, which we should, and not put Bradley Manning on trial with a possible death penalty as the consequence for his actions admonishing him all the way.

You bring up a good point, Henry. I understand both Sarge's and Mike's perspectives on this one. If indeed the situation is that of wanton killing of civilians then this kind of thing is totally unacceptable and should be dealt with by the military in such a way as to demonstrate its unacceptability. However, Mike indirectly mentioned a fearsomely effective tactic common in asymmetric war that of making it difficult to distinguish combatants from non-combatants. The soldiers in the field are already in a high-stress, high-uncertainty environment and expected to make quick threat-assessments and act quickly and decisively when necessary. This tactic compounds the difficulty of doing that.

Whether what the article states as the situation is accurate or not, the problem I have is the pictures. They are now plastered on the internet for the world to look at and infer whatever they want. I can easily see this being used as a recruitment tool by terrorist groups or insurgents with a strategy that includes targeting American military-or civilians-and assets by using these pictures as "evidence of American savagery and disrespect for human life." I'd really like to see the one who took the pics to be brought up for court-martial.

I'm giving it a 2-4 year window. Looking for improvement in all areas. Redskins, you're on the clock.

cmon now...how stupid can these guys be? taking pictures? and those aren't battlefield pictures.

also...just to sound out another theme...yes....these events are destructive and do lend themselves to recruiting. just like the overall influence of American culture and values are terrific recruiting tools. where does the line get drawn?
