RealRedskins: Only 7 Free Agents Left on Redskins' Roster

Signs of a new day? Maybe...encouraging to say the least.

The Washington Redskins are a team build of high-priced free agents. Ask anyone vaguely familiar with the team and with the NFL and they will tell you that.

The conventional wisdom, however, is off base. As of the end of the 2010 season, a total of six players on the Redskins roster came aboard as unrestricted free agents, defined as a player signed after his contract with his former club expired.

Two of those players, center Casey Rabach and linebacker London Fletcher, were full-time starters in 2010. The others are defensive end Andre Carter, quarterback Rex Grossman, offensive lineman Artis Hicks, and defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday.

There are a couple of technicalities that need to be dealt with here. As of the end of the 2010 season, Albert Haynesworth, the most notorious unrestricted free agent out there, was not on the final 2010 roster so he is not counted. Still, in the interest of accuracy we would have to include him as one of the team’s unrestricted free agents.

There are twice as many players who were drafted by the team, 14, as there are unrestricted free agents. The bulk of the team is made up of street free agents, players who were released by their former teams. There are 23 of those.

The remainder of the roster is composed of undrafted free agents (5) and player acquired by trades (5).

Reading comprehension not my thing, but what is the difference between a "street free agent" and an unrestricted free agent?

Seems like we still aren't drafting and home growing that many players...

A UFA is the type of guy that goes on the market and are generally more likely to receive a big contract offer from several teams (Haynesworth, Fletcher, etc.). Street free agents are released by their team, and not necessarily in high demand (Galloway, Buchanon, etc.). Both are technically UFAs, but I think Rich meant high-demand, big contract UFAs vs. low-demand, low contract guys.

The Gibbs/Beathard teams were FULL of guys that were street free agents and undrafted rookies. Nothing wrong with getting value for the minimum contract :)

The slant here is correct that the Redskins have excised from the roster high cost, low production players with the pending Haynesworth and McNabb moves to come.

BUT, the team because of a lousy draft in 2008 and outside of the Round 1 in other years now has a talent deficit that is as large as any I have seen since Norv's first year here in 1994.

yeah we even used to have guys that other teams picked up and who became starters and then almost HOF level guys (keenan mcardell) but in recent years we have failed to find talent in the later rounds let alone starter calibre.

we also havent maximised talent
