Default Rep. Moran: Dems Lost Because Many 'Don't Want to Be Governed by an African-American'

Wow. Looks like there might be racists outside the Tea Party

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011...est=latestnews

Virginia Democratic Rep. Jim Moran is blaming his party's losses last November in large part on voters who "don't want to be governed by an African-American."

The comments were made following President Obama's State of the Union speech Tuesday during an interview with Arab network Alhurra. Asked about the results of the midterm elections, the Virginia congressman compared the political environment to that which preceded the Civil War and suggested race was a determining factor.

"It happened ... for the same reason the Civil War happened in the United States," Moran said. "Southern states, particularly the slaveholding states, didn't want to see a president who was opposed to slavery.

"In this case a lot of people in this country, it's my belief, don't want to be governed by an African-American, particularly one who is inclusive, who is liberal, who wants to spend money on everyone and who wants to reach out to include everyone in our society. And that's a basic philosophical clash," Moran said.

    Here's my opinion on this.

A typical party hack trying to put a spin on mid-term election results that distorts reality. The Dems had been playing the 2006 House victory as a philosophical shift toward the Democratic party platform which is blatant nonsense. A lot of the Democratic gains in 2006 were in traditionally Republican areas and were the result of a "throw-the-bums-out" reaction by voters who were pissed off at both Bush and the then GOP controlled congress and were just venting at the polls. As soon as the new Dem controlled congress came in they had calmed down and went back to their normal perspectives on things. The smarter Dems with more political savvy and experience were the ones that distanced themselves from Obama after he was sworn in realizing, which he didn't, that the opposition would be coming after him hard and fast particularly because they recognized what had happened in the 2006 election and Obama's coattails in 2008 weren't long enough to consolidate the newer Dems in their congressional seats-which also is one of the main reasons why the GOP gains were so dramatic last November.

Moran's comments is a "grasping at straws" effort to throw a smokescreen over last November's congressional election results to avoid the embarrassment of a failed sales job by party leaders trying to make 2006/2008 into more than it really was. It wouldn't surprise me at all if some of the more politically experienced Dems were wishing he'd just kept his mouth shut-not only was what he said a spin effort, the way he phrased it is also a potential political embarrassment.

    My take anyway.

serv...here's the deal...because of what these knuckleheads have done we're going to have to cut massively across the board...including Defense. this at a time when we've overloaded overtaxed forces w/social justice priorities and 10 dozen other feel good line items. this at a time when the world situation is not improving.....but getting worse. what a calamity this has the potential to become. I hope to H the Egyptian Army has the Kahunas to resist an Islamist putsch. if it is about Democracy...and let's hope it is.....it'll be interesting to see who claims credit in the aftermath.

btw...agree w/your comment on Moran. the good news is that he's a nobody - no real power.

'These knuckleheads' are just the latest in a long line of knuckleheads. Seriously - Bush got us into 2 wars that, alone, have contributed massively to US debt. I'm not saying I didn't support aggression against Iraq and Afghanistan, because I did. But there was no need to be an occupying force for what's approaching a decade.

Plenty of knuckleheads on both sides of the aisle. The problem isn't policy, it's a total lack of regard by either party for the limitations of the US economy and any commitment whatsoever for fiscally responsible government.

We will spend, spend, spend until it all collapses. And who is in the White House or Congress, and which side of the aisle they occupy matters not.

yes...I understand there are mindsets which would not have responded to attacks planned and launched from Afghanistan; and I understand there are folks who try to claim the moral high ground while completely content to ignore decades of torture, rape and genocide in Iraq. As you note...it's never a clean break.

while I agree on your fiscal responsibility accusation...and further agree neither party has has demonstrated sustained leadership...one does have to wonder at some point: how much of this is intentional? defense spending in real terms has declined as a per centage of GDP over the last 60 years. entitlement spending has moved in one direction only and threatens to swamp the entire ponzi scheme. what component of this was done intentionally to create permanent "entitlement" voting blocks? what component of this was done intentionally to create a dependency state? what component of this was done intentionally to increase the power of the Federal government at the expense of the States and individuals? not 100%....in my mind....but certainly that has been part of the gameplan. lot of people were bought and paid for in a devil's bargain for power.....now...to pay it off.....they have to convince the working half to pay yet more taxes and to consume more with incomes that buy less in real terms.

I think you and Sarge misinterpreted his statement - he's saying the people who voted Republican did so because they didn't want to be governed by a black man. He's not saying he doesn't want to be.

Black has nothing to do with it. it's his Liberalism and incipient Socialism that is appealing to a certain crowd.

whats an african american to you?
that's Moran spouting off idiot rhetoric. it's meaningless drivel intended to stir an unthinking base. and my point is that people like Moran have been destroying Blacks and women for decades - I have been watching this my entire adult life - on the basis of ideology. the whole point about racism is a sham. these people themselves don't care about racial equality. they care about power and ideology.

Moran, of course, has a small problem if he is to be taken literally. why did these same people vote for Obama back in 2008? is racism something that is turned on/off like running water? or just a convenient fallback for empty minds that can't explain a reality that conflicts with their ideology?

in the event. We both know Moran is blowing smoke rings and that race is the duty catcall when all else fails. what's to argue about that?!

I don't happen to think it's a joking matter. that's all. folks like Moran are dangerous.

Just an aside - can we all agree that *BOTH* bases are filled with unthinking morons who simply shout buzzwords and campaign slogans without really knowing what's going on? Because I promise you, there are as many (if not more) unthinking Republicans as there are Democrats. Its silly to call one base or the other "unthinking." We've all got our morons to carry.

I wouldn't go so far as to accept equivalence. but sure...there are irritating, uninformed people on all sides. I happen to be focused on the group in power over the last four years....that seems particulalry attracted to a politics of personal destruction.

Why would any intelligent person want to be in political office or even run? Your opposition will do the best character assassination they can muster.

I agree. I just don't think that's what's going on here. I may have misinterpreted you to be agreeing with that line of thought....instead of poking fun at it.
