Dear Mr. Clinton Portis,

I hate to sound so formal, but you have truly earned the title of "Mr." for this Redskins fan. Mr. Portis, the purpose of this letter is three fold. First, it is to let you know how much appreciation there is for your talents and the dedication that you demonstrate each day. Second, it is to let you know that the desire to continue on like a true soldier is admired. Finally, this letter is to let you know that the most difficult decision of all is yours and yours alone. However, please take some time to read this letter and consider what is being said.

For this fan, your first moment as a member of the Redskins was a thing of beauty. You took the first play of the new season and dashed for a touchdown. Immediately, you became a favorite of the fans and that affection has continued to the present day. Coach Gibbs wanted you to become a different kind of running back and your attitude was a team first mentality. Not once did you waver in that dedication. Instead, you plowed ahead to record breaking seasons and displayed a tenacity for running, blocking, tackling (when needed), and receiving. No one can ever question your heart, Mr. Portis.

This season, you have gone through a nagging injury and another coaching change. It was heartwarming to see you reunited with your first professional coach. It seemed fitting that he would come to Washington and become your head coach once again. This year has been a series of highs and lows for the team, but you continue to be the ultimate team member who selflessly blocks huge defensive linemen and churns out the difficult yardage. The latest setback must be a heartbreaker for you and we, the fans, share some of that heartbreaking feeling as well.

This brings us to the most difficult decision of all. Mr. Portis, you have given your heart, soul, mind, body, and immense talent to this game for a considerable amount of time. You will always have a place in Redskins history and you have truly defined what being a team member is all about, especially in this day and age when "me first" athletes dominate the landscape. However, none of us (the fans) can tell you when it is time to walk away from the game. Only you can make that decision, but please know that we will fully respect your wishes. The only thing we can let you know is how we feel. Thus far, it has been a great ride and if it were to end very soon, then please realize how much we love you and admire the attitude and dedication that you have brought to the Washington Redskins and the fans.

One final thought. Mr. Portis, when it is time to call it quits, we hope that you continue to be a part of the team and mentor young running backs on all the amazing abilities that you displayed for many years.

Mr. Portis, thanks for everything.

That is a great letter and expresses our sentiments exactly. Wonderfully worded and sincerely written.

Well spoken, BB, and the thoughts expressed are indeed shared by other Redskins fans such as myself.

CP has what so many players lack on the field "HEART"... On those few runs last week you could feel it through the tv, emotion, passion, things that have been lacking overall for far too long.

I get so angry when people buy into the media stories about how bad a teammate portis is, ffs the guy literally sells out his body every time he plays, he plays hard all the time and has never given us a reason to doubt him. he has been a true redskin.
