Anthony Armstrong had something of a coming out party on Sunday's game against the Packers. His continued tenacity and dedication has finally paid some much needed dividends. The receiving corps needed another player to step up and when the Redskins decided it wasn't Devin Thomas, Anthony Armstrong took it upon himself to fill that void.
The leaping fourth quarter touchdown catch against Green Bay provided a spark and the Redskins never looked back. Santana Moss is on pace to have his best year as a pro, but he was the only reliable wide receiver in the first four games. Enter Armstrong. Without that fourth quarter grab for six, the Redskins were still staring at a 2-3 record and a humbling loss at home. In a game where there were several heroes, Armstrong's efforts can't be denied.
Armstrong's emergence has opened up some new and interesting possibilities for the Redskins. First, Donovan McNabb has a new weapon in his passing arsenal and some of the pressure is taken off of Moss and Chris Cooley. Second, the Redskins now have the option of plugging Brandon Banks in on some third down passing situations. At the very least, opposing defenses will need to have a certain focus on the speedy Banks (can you say "WR screen" or "quick slant routes" ) and this should afford Moss and Armstrong additional opportunities. Third, an increased passing attack could spark the dormant running game and open up some nice holes for Ryan Torain and Keiland Williams.
A few months ago, most fans saw Anthony Armstrong as nothing more than camp fodder or a practice squad member. The coaching staff saw a player who could contribute and decided he was worthy of a place on this team. He has a lot of heart and now his talent and speed is contributing to much needed points and victories. At this juncture, we can forgive the tripping over his own feet in Philadelphia - after all, that catch provided three valuable points that were the difference in the end (Philly had to go for a touchdown and not a field goal to win).
